You can't camp nearly as well with those characters without customs. Same with Rosalina.

Lol the only thing Rosa loses without customs is the shooting star bit. It's still best to play defensively and wait for them to come to you. Sonic gets different attributes to his spin attacks but he's still just mainly going to be using spin attacks to approach you and run away. All the characters you're mentioning are going to be playing defensively and "boring" regardless of whether customs are legal or not. There are arguments for why customs shouldn't be legal but "promoting defensive play" really isn't one of them. All the characters that play defensively with customs play defensive without them. It's the optimal way to play the character.
