Smells like fresh rosebuds
So, we can assume you'll be buying DS3 next week then? Also, is there a good story behind your coverall plight?

Probably. And no, there is no story. Girls are gross and no one cleans the heads unless we force them to. So I had to take a shit and dropped my coveralls without looking not noticing the deck had gross water rolling around(seas are kinda heavy here so we are rocking like fuck).

You know what I wish one of you ambitious game devs would make?

A tire fire?!

Brb calling the police.

you live in backwoods ohio yeah? I'd be surprised if you didn't know a ton of people who do it. also using racing oil to start it

but no my family doesn't use them. bonfires for us are just branches of trees that fell and a couple christmas trees. we just do it every other year or so

Lol focus on what you have to do man. LK can wait.
cm-vi1.gif

That too! Dangit.

I'll probably be back this afternoon and do the stream then.

I was hoping to finalise a couple of idle animations I was tooling around with yesterday after the vertex group bullshit buuuuut NOPE.

There's something about the flow of your game that makes me smile everytime I see it (could be the PC's animations?)

Playing through Dark Souls 1 in 2011 was a pivotal thing for me -- gaming wise. It single handedly renewed my interest in gaming

I had a rough start the first time I played it on 360. At the start I felt like I was playing a proper hard as balls 3D castlevania. But the game broke my spirit.

I eventually stopped being dumb and picked it back up a year later when I gave up on consoles. That's when I fell in love. Literally reminded me of why I fell in love with the hobby in the first place

Oh yeah, I've seen quite a few. They're pretty common around these here parts.

Never burnt any ourselves at least.

dope, dude. explain to me how potion brewing works!

I have a ton of ideas about how alchemy will work in a possible next game

There are seven different kinds of flowers in the game spread throughout the world. If you pay attention you can collect a bunch of them, though they kind of blend into the background at times. You also find or purchase recipes for various potions, which can in turn be used at cauldrons to create or replenish potions (such as 2 heatherpoppy and 1 lyleberry for a healing potion). In some cases (especially treasure chests and human-type enemies) you can find ready-made potions that you don't have to brew.

Potions stay potent indefinitely before quaffing them, but flowers and plants you harvest will wilt if you don't brew them quickly enough. Combined with the inherent passage of time when resting at a cauldron, this helps avoid farming too many potion ingredients (since flowers will respawn, but usually by that time your old store will have wilted).

This shows off some flower picking, but the animations have improved quite drastically since I recorded this back in December I think.

How long have you been working on your game?
It really looks amazing.

Since this past November.

our neighbors once came over and insisted we use their old sprint car tires. that was the only time that happened at our house. smelled horrifying. also I think after they got drunk and shot shotguns at empty beer bottles. its amazing how accurate some stereotypes are

Since this past November.

I find the colors in your game consistently awesome. how would you recommend figuring colors out? I was thinking of taking a painting or graphics arts class at a community college but idk

I'd be very disappointed if someone invited me to a bonfire and it was less than 6 feet tall and they used less than 3 tires #hickthings

Yeah, OK, toilet floor water is gross. My condolences.

You might like to give Dungeon League a shot, similar to what you request.

Haha.

We have like three shotguns. And ammo to boot. But no one uses them for anything currently. They're sort of just there.

Why is my game selling in Ireland but not Scotland.

Come on guys.

And yeah, Lilith's game looks fucking amazing. I love how she has an appreciation for names.

bahahha I hope my cockflower stays in

my game world has over 100 flowers in it. they're a bit more of a special find and not littered all about. they are the primary way of leveling up or evolving your pet (each one can be used for either thing) none of them respawn. originally there was going to be specific, finite ways to respawn the flowers in the world but I couldn't figure out how to balance things that way.

I have a great interest in making a game that has a whole hunting/gathering/crafting angle along with the day night cycle and everything. I'm so envious right now.

Lots and lots of practice. I mean there are definitely all sorts of tutorials and stuff out there, but nothing beats trying stuff yourself to get a real handle on what works for you. I've never taken any art classes except once in high school, which definitely didn't help. I just draw all the time. And when I look at things I try to study what colors there are in the image, how light plays off of things, what mood different shapes and colors evoke, et cetera. Why are those shadows bluer than the highlights? Why does that object appear to be lit from three different directions? Why does Tim Burton like spirals so much?

I wish I could boil it down to a real simple answer but it's not simple, and it's not something you can learn over a couple weekends. It's a highly involved pursuit where you keep getting better bit by bit.

Oh, the Thewsong flower is definitely staying in. It's one of the rarer ingredients but it's used in most of the most powerful potions.

One of the tougher things for me to balance is how many different potions there are. I put them all in differently shaped bottles so they'll each be iconic, but eventually it becomes quite difficult to come up with new and interesting shapes, and also difficult for the player to manage such a potentially huge medicine cabinet. To that end there are certainly benefits in an abstracted or generalized system, but personally I love using recipes.

God. Damnit.

2016 : Year of the dicks

Yeah, no. There's no way this game is coming out in 2016! Nice try though.

Plus flowers are fucking sexual organs to begin with. That's what pollination is.

I'm honored!

Re. colors I think color selection is one of the most important aspects of doing all of this. I used to go to http://www.colourlovers.com/ a lot to get ideas for color interplays.

For now I mostly design colors around pink. Bold pink vs. something else. That's just this game though.

http://gfycat.com/IncompleteClearcutArmedcrab

in this vazra demon screen test you can see most the colors were set up, as with all part sof the world, with the idea that various pink shit might happen over top them

okay that's nice to hear. I know some concepts of color theory (like going with the complementary color to make shadows) but I've mostly stuck with black and white everything(pretty much just charcoal) so I'm not bad with lighting but have no idea how to pick colors

pretty much the main thing art classes have helped me with is confidence since really in my last class I didn't improve much from the first day to the last but it was much easier for me to commit to something

I wonder if the camera in my computer is good enough to take a picture of something and get colors from it. I know its supposed to have some sort of special thing in its graphics card which makes it work well for matching colors from different things ro something. I should read up on that

Maybe if you have some special camera or firmware. I've never used a computer camera that had good color and lighting, especially not in any fluorescent- or incandescent-lit room.

My world has no flowers in it and I'm still deciding if you actually can fuck Cthulhu or not.

The computer is made for graphics design and such but looking it up I don't think it has any special camera. Definitely not buying something for that though.

It does have this:
Color management compatible

The VAIO Z Canvas lets you calibrate and match colors on a single device. And since color profiles of graphic cards can be rewritten on the VAIO Z Canvas, color management is stress free with no interruption to your work flow.
Which honestly I'm not entirely sure what that means

Now that it's underwater, it makes me weirdly uncomfortable for some reason :p

Underwater makes lots of things less comfortable. Take SOMA for example.

But also you're probably subconsciously noting the cold-water shrinkage and calculating the growth that would occur once it surfaces and warms up.

I think that has more to do with balancing the gamma and whatnot of the screen. I'm not 100% sure though.

oh he'll flinch

that was just a messy little screentest to check colors/size/etc which i often do early on when implementing a unit

I'm now expecting a "drain the water" puzzle to access a secret area at the top of the shaft.

All output devices have colour profiles. If you have a managed colour profile for each display and the printer you use is also colour managed than you get WYSIWYG proofing for photography and desktop publishing. Extends to video too, so one can do accurate colour grading.

I know nothing how to run such a set up in Windows but it has been built-in on the Mac for 20 years (but you still need an external colourometer for your display).

Hey, the guy from Mr. Robot is in this weird NetFlix movie I'm watching. He's a good actor.

All of this nice-ass game artwork.

I should be getting in my new art for New Game+ early next month.

I am stumped as to what the next two (and final) quests for act 1 should be. Math and Arts. The Theater class quest is probably gonna be the biggest damn quest in the game.

I should put more effort into improving my drawing.

I don't feel like that really helps me for what I use it for but nice to have options anyway
