FakeGAF Episode 5: The Thirst Awakens

So I walked through to the haze
And a million dirty waves
Now I see you lying there
Like a lie-low losing air, air
Black rocks and shoreline sand
Still dead summer I cannot bear
And I wipe the sand from my arms
The Spanish Sahara
The place that you'd wanna
Leave the horror here

Well fuck now I gotta go listen to it

zelda has been the same game for the past 30 years tho

same could be said for the rest of their franchises

This is a troll post right? You're funny.

No not really

The first Zelda games were pioneers of open world game design

They stopped going down this path though from the OOT era and turned the series increasingly into mushy pointless tripe

the difference between ocarina of time and twilight princess is not all that great

except for maybe wolf mode that was kind of neat

Correct. The formula may have been impressive in the 90s but it's trash now, especially as other, more visionary developers (namely FromSoft) has picked up their legacy and left them in the dust

But what about Ocarina and Wind Waker? Or even Skyward Sword? Or Majora's Mask? All are unique in their own way.

MM is my favorite by far. There's so much shit to do outside of the main storyline and it makes better use of the Ocarina than OoT did. It's also one of the darker LoZ games. All of these people's lives are fucked, they're about to be obliterated by the moon, you don't have enough time to help all of them in a single run and constantly have to turn back time, and when you do, any good that you did gets erased from your current timeline, and the Skull Kid murdered Deku Butler's son to strap his soul to your face.

I dunno.... I just feel nintendo plays it waaaaay too safe in general

I mean I understand not wanting to alienate fans but still

1) take a chance, you are a major company and can afford to and

2) realize that the fans that grew up with your games have since grown up and want something more/different out of you

edit - jesus, Funky that is straight up pornographic

Because whenever they try something new, people say "fuck you, where's our *insert 1st party title here* and when they deliver the 1st party titles, people get annoyed because they want something else. Splatoon was one of the exceptions.

If I hadn't lopped off all my hair after graduating and wasn't too impatient to wait for it to grow back I'd probably cosplay as a squid kid...then get shot by cops for having a water gun prop but I could worry about that later.

Zelda U looks just as different as all the other Zelda games, which is to say similar in scope and playstyle but different aesthetically, probably with a unique mechanical difference that changes and challenges our expectations of Zelda games.

Mario Maker is about as bold and risky a move a game company can make. Putting out tools that allow your consumers to take content creation into their own hands must have been terrifying.

Splatoon is the best, freshest, and most innovative 3rd person arena shooter on the market in about a decade.

They constantly take chances with the Metroid franchise, sometimes to fan acclaim, sometimes to fan whining.

I don't doubt that they have some degree of variation but nothing has compelled me to purchase any of their products since that time I briefly owned a gamecube.

I played on my former brother-in-laws wii for twillight princess

and I have a n3DSXL just collecting dust that I bought when I was really sick last year

there just isn't a single thing about nintendo that piques my interest right now

One day, ONE DAY, I'll find the spare time to play the Wii/Wii U games. I actually love Zelda despite shitting on Nintendo for sport.
personally I wouldn't recommend it.

theres a lot of western devs that are worse. Bethesda, Ubisoft, COD stuff, whoever does halo, naughty dog(since uncharted), EA(sports, sims etc but for obvious reasons) etc. Rockstar actually sorta just makes the same games in different settings but it usually turns out so no one complains. nintendo does entire genre shifts(though generally they end up being spinoffs) with their serieses whereas the typical thing for western devs is to simply iterate on the next one

Microsoft: "Here's Gears of War 4! It's a third person shooter but this time you can play a girl!"

Sony: "Here's Uncharted 4! It's Uncharted but this time he looks even more like Capt. Malcolm Reynolds!"

Nintendo: "Here's another Metroid but this time it's a fucking squad based pinball shooter or something fuck I dunno everyone here is stoned as hell"

...

And here's marrec, double-posting because he's cranky today.

Most game developers are chasing something. FromSoft - to bring them up again - Are an example of a dev who is leading. There is an embracing of the past, a love of existing and classic things, but also vision, boldness, and.. design thirst. Nintendo used to be that. In the 80s and 90s, they were totally that. Super Metroid was a visionary game. Nintendo is a shell of its former self; Now merely mushy peddlers of warm feelings and the past. I don't know if that can sustain them forever. Maybe it can. But they [mostly] lost me at some point along the way.

Oh please, FromSoft has been making the same fucking game for 20 years and it just now caught on because the finally got the formula right.

You don't wanna step to this. Check yourself before you get fucking wrecked

You look at the design and mechanical elements of FromSoft games like Otogi and King's Field and you can draw a rather direct line straight to Souls and Bloodborne.

Personally I think they peaked with Otogi 1 + 2, having only getting close recently with Bloodborne.

Edit:

They're different enough to not be "the same game" but to imagine that they stumbled upon some classical gaming masterpiece from a vacuum is silly.

I think what may be key for Nintendo will be the old hands retiring/etc. They have some young blood there who are capable of doing new things -- See Splatoon -- But as long as senile dinosaurs and proprietors of shit taste like Miyamoto hold sway, Nintendo will not be what I want it to be.

I don't even know who FromSoft is

it's your mom, and I'm your dad.

I agree. every time miyamoto comes up in the news its him stopping a good video game concept from being made :(

(which tbf usually are sequels and not what you're looking for anyway)

You and me Dragonz. Souls = Games with great level designs and aesthetic but poor combat

I agree. they're like a worse version of Zelda combat ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Twilight Princess is the best Zelda game hands down. Never mind it being a retread. It's the culmination of everything good about previous Zelda games.

Decades of rom hacks and nearly a decade since LittleBigPlanet's success say nah. Mario Maker is both incredibly safe and long overdue.

Man, you and FloatOn are crazy Jobbs. Nintendo are continually, every generation, some of the most creative people in the business.

Poor combat!? waaaat

the combat is some of the best in rpg

everything has weight. everything has consequences. everything must be deliberate

if you mean video game messiah of shit games

sure

detecting poor taste

I agree to a certain extent, but Rom hacks and LBP (which was a hack of a game) were proven completely inferior to what Mario Maker was. Couple that with the shockingly capable community tools Nintendo put together for it and it's a complete departure from what they've put out in the past. It was absolutely a risk for them to put this out instead of another traditional Mario game.

Dark Souls and the niche it created feels like what gaming might have been in an alternate reality that branched off from the mid 90s where things just went slightly differently for some reason.. A butterfly's wings and all that.

I don't mind sequels. I mind shit games.

Miyamoto is trash. They should lock him away in his garden or his cave or whatever and let people who like and understand video games make the games

I agree. they're like a worse version of Zelda combat ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Fucking evil

I think its the best version of playing the formula straight (though the bug segments can die)

he put it wrong: it was risky of them because now they can't justify putting out Ultra New Super Mario Brothers NX 2 in 2 years

Funky Papa

FUNK-Y-PPA-4
I need to make a list with some bombass indie/Steam games that can be played with an old school 8-way joystick for my arcade cabinet.

I wish nintendo had the balls to revisit the Zelda 2 and doki doki panic Super Mario Bros 2 style of games

You know, I used to hate SMB2 back in the day. It took me over 10 years to appreciate how much fun it was.

God, the 8-16 bit era was such a monumental period of time.
