Fallout 4 - Reviews thread

Rampant? There's like three YouTube videos.

You mean people are hyperbolic and overly dramatic when it comes to technical issues? Like how isolated fps drops on a particular part of the map had people calling Witcher 3 broken and unplayable at launch, when most were playing hours upon hours with no major issues?

THERE WILL BE A PATCH JUST BEFORE THE FIRST DLC. IT WILL ADD ACHIEVEMENTS FOR THE FIRST DLC.

Poor CaptainAhab. Reduced to flashing light .gifs and bold caps-lock in every post to draw the personal attention & ire that dried up pages and hours ago.

Or is it an ironic alt account from someone who loves Bethesda & Fallout?

Hmmm...

Read Jim's review and watched his relationships video - I don't think I've been this excited for the game since E3.

I love Fallout! WOOOOOOOOO!

edit: For real tho, the game is still locked for me, anyone have a link to the post that describes how to unlock it thru steam?

Lol, be careful. According to kotaku, you may get banned!

You're lucky though, Amazon still hasn't shipped mine. I switched to the ps4 version myself.

Haven't watched the Digital Foundry videos? Frame are constantly dropping in every combat scenario.

I don't remember the last time I saw so many people overtly wanting an entry to a beloved series to fail. What is up with that?

It's a much-hyped title getting great scores and from what we can tell living up to most expectations -- for the record that is a good thing, people.

Does Jim have a magic PS4 or something?

You don't just not encounter something that's rampant, widespread, and well documented.

Some people aren't very sensitive to framerate issues. It doesn't bother me unless it's really bad, like Dark Souls blighttown bad.

I wonder if Bethesda are going build a better engine after this game.

I know a lot of people seem to think that they'll get away with this forever but it seems like there are definitely more people fed up with it this time. The metascore is clearly lower than there previous games (albeit not by much) and far more people are calling out this games bugs in their reviews.

It seems likely that if TES VI has these same problems it's going to receive even more backlash.

I think it's just people wanting Bethesda to make a better game. Engine and visual wise.

Well, for some people who don't like Bethesda's style of gameplay/veterans of the original Fallouts (1, 2), it wouldn't really be a good thing. They would want it to fail so that Bethesda would change things up a bit. Some people have the fear that as long as Bethesda gets good reviews they will make the same games with the same problems over and over. Some people are fine with that, but some aren't.

At least, that's what it looks like to me...

And that's my only issue with what Jim said. "I didn't encounter" is way different from "I didn't notice".

What are the reviews saying about the game from a tech perspective? I've heard that the ps4 version has some frame rate issues, but I dont know how bad it is. I also dont know how the other versions of the game are. I imagine the PC running the best though. Just because you can throw more hardware at it

Bethesda-made rpgs get an unusual amount of vitriol on this site. Not surprised honestly.

With indie games and things like kickstarter, I feel like nowadays there are plenty of other RPG's that work for people who feel that way. Kinda weird at this point to hope Bethesda fails when it's clear many people enjoy the games they make.

I mean, the DF article does say "All things put into perspective, Fallout 4 does hold 30fps as a general rule"...so maybe its not that "rampant" or "widespread"

Ps4 has major problems in the framerate department, Xbox is noticeably worse so you can image how bad.
Of course PC runs best and looks significantly better if you have the hardware, Arkham Knight was a fluke not something you should expect to happen.

Didn't wasteland 2 just come out for consoles? Or am I wrong

I hear ya.

Personally, I find it sad, that people seem to need to feed their internal conviction that this game would review poorly. When in fact, it reviewed well and we should all be happy there is another fun game to play.

I don't think it's a matter of outright wanting it to flop (at least for some folks) rather than wanting more attention being brought to the issues that continually arise in each entry. I didn't want the game to get bad reviews, but I did hope that reviewers noticed them and mentioned them (if they were indeed present). It seems like it was brought up in many reviews so I consider it a good situation. Wanting a game to flop is silly though, these devs gotta eat too.

When you say major frame rate problems, what does that mean? I could probably do 25 FPS on occassion. But if it happens all of the time, or is even a more significant drop then I dont know if I could deal with it.

For me, I expected high scores, but it really is aggravating that Bethesda are one of the few developers that can get away with having such an abundance of glitches with multiple uses of the same engine and not have points shaved off. I do love Bethesda games, but it really would be nice to see a fire lit under their backsides and have them release a game that runs smoothly for once.

Even though people don't think about it, these are machines we're talking about. They're not set in-stone to all run and be EXACTLY the same. Every console has varying miles from person to person, and just because they're mass-produced doesn't mean they're suddenly immune to the natural degrading of use and even smaller things like mishandling or dust.

I still have a November of 2005 Xbox 360 from the first wave of shipments. It's still hooked up to my old TV. It still turns on, and it still runs games. I've used that thing from Call of Duty 2 to BioShock Infinite and everything in between. Oblivion, Skyrim, and Fallout 3 included. Never got so much as a couple crashes from any of them even after all these years.

You can't just assume EVERY SINGLE experience with these, or really any game is going to be the same.

It's just that people who have problems are going to be the loudest, because of course, that's only natural.

People who don't... are playing the game and have nothing to complain about.

I know you're kidding but he was pretty down on it for the technical issues. Calling it a 4-star review.

watching the QL he sounds positive, but he did mention about the technical problems but not enough to hamper his enjoyment. Which is guess why its 4 stars (haven't read the review)

The people being negative don't want the series to fail. That's ridiculous. Thinking that Bethesda has sat on their hands too much and not fixed problems that are still there and so maybe they should get a 7 or 8 out of 10 isn't wanting the game to fail. Pretty much everyone would still buy the damned game. Look at Destiny. At least with a score more reflective of the problems those people see, there would be incentive for Bethesda to finally fix it. Then we all win.

He's going to play the PC version now he's finished it on PS4 which I expect to be more positive.

What makes this review any more honest than any other review?

Because it is balanced unlike many of the other reviews that I have read that simply just gush. Even polygon put many of the issues only as sidebars. I suggest you read Sam Machkovech's other writting and reviews. Arstechnica in general feels no need to please any publishers.

I have a problem with the word "honest" here...

Why? Are you just parsing words or did you read the review and make your opinion of my one word?

So is this more honest than the other reviews because it matches your own feelings and pre-existing issues with the game?

Nope, I am an honest to goodness fan having played Fallout 1, 2, 3 and New Vegas. I wanted it to be the best of the series. I ignored or dismissed the early suggestions that there would be issues and I believed that some of those things were pre-release issues. From what I have seen myself, I am disappointed. I understand there will be a patch to address crashes, but the plastic NPCs and animation is very disappointing. The "surprise" element of FO3 was what I liked about it. F04 does not really have a story it seems or it will take many hours before if finally gets good The story and dialog and lore of 1 & 2 made me a fan and was hoping for that. Finally, I have followed Sam Machkovech for sometime in he various writting of reviews and he tells you about the game without the guise of being a fanboy or wanting to please everyone and when he is a fanboy, he tells you up front in the first paragraph.

Oh, so you've played it then?

For about 2hrs, yes, that is all. I get my own copy when it is released like everyone else however as I have it pre-ordered for XB1 but will not be playing it for another week due to a business trip that was unplanned.
