Fans already forming lines for Star Wars: TFA at LA theatre

Not sure what they're getting out of it

It's a community thing. It's SCA for Star Wars nerds, only instead of pretending to be a knight you "wait" in line with other people like you. You give interviews for journalists looking to do puff pieces, you talk to curious onlookers and endure harassment from the same, and at the end the movie itself is practically an afterthought.

I live just down the street in Los Feliz - anyone need me to relay important information to these frontline soldiers?
If you could please deliver this message:

I live around the corner, place looks like a homeless encampment and it's still over a week away, just going to get bigger. I think it's being promoted by local businesses too. Not sure what they're getting out of it but whatever...

Are these food and stores that sell cleaning products?

Ok, I want to chime in on this since I did this for a week for Episode 3 at the Chinese Theater. It's not a line in the traditional sense. It's a party that lasts for a week. People are hanging out and having fun. There's food, people have Internet, there's power, etc.

My heart goes out to whoever sits next to them

People leave the line to take showers. You can come and go and not lose your place in line. People did it daily when I was there.

Why? I assume they got tickets already so this is kind of pointless.

See above, it's a giant party, not a line.

Sorry, should have specified, I meant I don't know what the businesses are getting out of it. Like Meltdown comics. I guess a neighborhood thing maybe? Cross promotions. Monster Energy. Cards Against Humanity. Stuff like that.

Apparently Hollywood Blvd is officially shut down until Monday, they're expecting that big of a thing. I suppose it's a good time to put up some promo tents and sell some stuff, so that makes sense now. Make it a party.

So, they'll see it exactly at the same time as those who don't stand in line for two weeks. The benefits to this are ... what, exactly?

"I was first!" - Smelly dude in line.

"Um, I was, too ..." - guy who bought tickets online, arrived at the theater one hour before.

Lining up in LA isn't going far enough. Do these supernerds know that the first public screening will be in the Philipenes more than two days before the US opening. I want to see the lines in Manilla.

No point in ridiculing people waiting in line for phones, gadgets, movies, etc. I use to do the same shit when getting caught up in hyped up stuff.

This. It happens everytime with a major release of a product or movie or what ever, and people still act shocked or completely confused at why people line up several days earlier.

They aren't doing it for any normal reasons you'd line up early for, like to beat the crowd or to get the best seats. They're doing it for fun. To them it's like going camping with a bunch of fellow hardcore Star Wars fans. They receive attention from media. They can look back 10 years from now and be tied to the coverage and reporting of, what is for them, a historical event. It's just an experience that only the most die hard fans would get enjoyment out of.

I stood in line for an hour for an iPhone 4 and I regret it to this day.

I don't understand how "the experience" of standing in line for days is worth it to anyone unless you are looking for attention, which these people are.

Why wouldn't any theater use reserved seatings in this day and age? Got the tickets and seats ready, and can't believe it's only 7 days to go.

Why didn't these "fans" reserve their tickets a theater with numbered seats?

edit: oh it's a "party" for crazy people.

I'm going on the 17th and I'll show up five minutes before show time to purchase some popcorn and a coke, then I'll casually retire to my reserved seat

This is stupid. Just buy your ticket beforehand like a normal person. No need to live the life of a homeless person for almost 2 weeks.

Booked reserved seats for the weekend after. No way I'm gonna line up 6 hours ahead of time to get a chance at semi decent seats on launch weekend.

Find a movie theater that lets you pick your seats beforehand like I did. I got opening night tickets for the first showing in great seats.

Everyone talking about reserved seats online, read the article. They know they can reserve seats, but

Cinematic history...right. When people talk about Star Wars, they'll definitely remember some guy who spent a week sitting on the pavement for a movie.

Folks, it's less waiting for a movie than it is an extended outdoors Star Wars con.

Now, if you think that's a dumb thing, that's fine, but...these people aren't doing this because they think they won't otherwise get tickets or seats.

That's definitely true re: Phantom Menace. I'd say less so with Clones and Revenge of the Sith, but someone posted a documentary about the Clones waiters, so guess there was still some steam left.

God if this movie is bad people are going to freak

I couldn't imagine waiting ten days in line to do anything. At all.

It doesnt matter. They will convince themselves its good regardless. Anybody that hyped probably isnt looking to think critically about it.

“We’re lining up for the new ‘Star Wars’ movie,” an Australian woman at the front of the queue, Caroline Ritter, told an incredulous-looking couple visiting from Ohio who stopped to inquire and take photos. “Yes, we still have a very long time to wait,” Ms. Ritter added. “No, we’re not crazy.”
What a crazy person would say.

Please let there be little to no annoying star wars fans on Friday morning.

We are going in on the 19th. I wonder what kind of line we'll have to make.

It's a 445pm show...so I'm thinking an hour?

I was thinking it was going to be the opposite actually. No matter how good it is people are going to shit all over it endlessly.
