Female characters at E3 this year versus last year

It's really hilarious and cosmically ironic that some people see diversity as being "forced" when white male protagonist are being forced down our throats all the god damn time.

But that's the totally fine kind of force feeding. Funny that.

This is actually super important. If men and women are going to be represented equally to one another, that should generally apply to enemy mooks as well.

That's another thing caused by the perception of male being the "default". You need to make "characterless" characters to kill in a shooter, so you're probably going to make them male.

How many did we have at E3 last year? I don't remember there necessarily being a shortage, at least in comparison to this year. Of course we could always have more female characters but I'd like to see a direct comparison from last year vs. this year if this is really an improvement.

Let's reasonably set the comparison to "What they showed at the press conferences"

Here's a list from wikipedia for E3 2014:

Microsoft
Forza Horizon 2
Rise of the Tomb Raider
Evolve
Dragon Age: Inquisition
Sunset Overdrive
Project Spark
Ori and the Blind Forest
Halo 5: Guardians
Scalebound
Killer Instinct S2
Phantom Dust (lol)
Crackdown 3
AC Unity
COD Advanced Warfare
Witcher 3
The Division
Halo MC Collection
Dance Central Spotlight

EA
Dragon Age Inquisition
Mass Effect 4
Mirror's Edge Catalyst
SW Battlefront
Battlefield Hardline
Sims 4
Madden/Live/FIFA/NHL/PGA Tour

Ubisoft
The Division
The Crew
Valiant Hearts
AC Unity
Far Cry 4
Rainbow Six: Siege
Just Dance 2015

Sony
Bloodborne
LBP 3
Uncharted 4
GTA 5
Dead Island 2
No Man's Sky
Destiny
MK X
Far Cry 4
Batman: Arkham Knight
Metal Gear Solid V

Nintendo
Smash Bros 4
Yoshi's Wooly World
Bayonetta 2
Hyrule Warriors
Xenoblade Chronicles
Legend of Zelda Wii U
Captain Toad
Kirby and the Rainbow Cruse
Splatoon

Not to rock the boat, but most soldiers, security officers and hired mercenaries are male. Combine that with how difficult it can be create unique mooks (both because it's more development time and because then you have to fit more in system memory), it's no great surprise that most mooks have been male. But yeah, seeing female mooks where appropriate is cool! :)

I'm interested in the consequences of this

will the games sell less, same-ish or better? what effect would most of the high profile ones bombing have on future games? will male gamers not care or will a reduced representation compared to before make them start to care more and seek out games with male protagonist? will it bring in more women into gaming or will it have no effect?

obviously hard to get any answer to those question beyond raw sales numbers
I guess the line up of games shown at e3 in ~2019/2020 might answer some of them since those games would have started production around the time the current ones would have been released and their performance analyzed by the publishers

I've been skimming through the thread, but have more characters been posted or is it still a borefest?

Edit: I saw the Shield Maiden. She and Faith seem pretty cool.

A lot of posters sure do come off that way. Look at how Cammy is being body shamed.

You can't body shame a piece of artwork. She was designed, not born, she didn't 'work for that body'.

They upped her cup size and added jiggle solely for the sex appeal of it.

I'm sorry but I have to come out of the closet and say that I prefer the mass market sexy ladies of yore. These women are too homely looking to keep me interested. I don't need Ivy from Soul Caliber but definitely something closer to that direction than this.

I mean, like Agremont said, people have their opinions and subjectivities, but this just sounds... off.

I respect the hell out of the use of a Bowfinger gif here

25% better than 0%. And being a side character shouldn't keep her from being a good character
It just sounds like them throwing her in due to critism instead of just having you pick whichever you want and an AI controls the other. I doubt the gender is necessary for the 75% the male character is played

Disclosure: my default state is to never assume Ubisoft does anything for the right reasons in the last 7 years

Are you saying that developers shouldn't respond to criticism? Please tell me I'm reading that wrong!

That's what I've been wondering. I never see people complain about developers listening to fans unless the topic is diversity in games, then all of a sudden it's "bowing to pressure" or forcing developers to compromise their artistic vision.

Not to reduce the clear progress toward equal representation but some franchises are taking leaps back

Going back to the topic of Hitman, and white guys in games needing no justification - where the hell is the justification for Agent 47 being a bald white guy?

AFAIK, it's supposed to be that he can "look like anyone", since he frequently steals people's outfits and impersonates others....but we're talking about a world-traveling assassin who would stick out in most places of the world.
I don't buy it at all.

White is still the option that will raise the least suspictions in the most areas of the world though. Especially since he does tend to stick to mostly western countries.

Jiggling comes with the territory if you have large breasts, and it's not really my place to say that devs shouldn't make large-breasted characters, but I think a good compromise would be to make the physics a bit toned down. Though, knowing how dev works, this probably is the toned-down version.

Something I've noticed is that most of the far- and near-future games have pretty good representation of minorities. Not necessarily up to par, but getting better. It's mostly in fantasy and "historic" games that the lack of diversity is being felt, but that's overblown because those kinds of games are seriously in vogue right now.

Anyway, that's a subject for a different thread. In here we're being happy that there are finally an appropriate number of females in games! :)

I don't know about finally. We never had a shortage of female protagonists in games except during the 80's.

Tomb Raider
Metroid
Super Princess Peach
Donkey Kong Country 3
The Walking Dead
Mirror's Edge
Beyond Good and Evil
Shantae
Castlevania
Resident Evil
Perfect Dark
Dino Crisis
Final Fantasy
Silent Hill
Fatal Frame
Bayonetta
Heavenly Sword
Gravity Rush
Um Jammer Lammy
Dead or Alive
Skullgirls
Remember Me
Life Is Strange
Okami
Threads of Fate

are games that are pretty well known amongst us geeks.

Over-active breast "physics" have existed in gaming for probably two decades at this point; why introduce them to Street Fighter now?

That's a lot of games but they don't make up the majority of AAA games that have come out in the last decade. I know what you mean, but I think you know what I meant too ;)

I don't know. I'm not one of the designers on that game. But in several ways it's going for higher fidelity, so maybe "more accurate physics" is another item to serve that goal. Again, though, I don't know.

Whaaa? There's nothing accurate about how those boobs are moving, christ. It's purely for titillation and you know it.

It's a pretty good question - why did Capcom wait until now to do this kind of thing with their characters?

It kinda feels like Capcom is acknowledging that SF V is a niche product for the hardcore fans of the series; a game that wasn't even going to get made if it wasn't for Sony's investment. I'm not really sure if huge, ridiculous swaying breasts is a symptom of a niche game getting more niche, but "fan service" is ostensibly for fans

...and that's ok.

It's cliche as hell, but then again, this is Street Fighter

Are you saying you think it's less accurate than an immobile chest, or that previous chests have been animated more accurately?

For what it's worth, every animation in Street Fighter is exaggerated.

Thanks for the mention. Though not a focus in any of the press conferences, we are in the Sony booth showing off the game. Several female playable characters in the game, including the lead.
No prob. Really looking forward to your game. Sorry to be annoying but I don't suppose there's an actual release date beyond just 2015, is there? :)

Are you saying you think it's less accurate than an immobile chest, or that previous chests have been animated more accurately?
I'm saying neither of those things. I'm saying that accuracy is very very very obviously not the reason they chose this animation. Come on.

I'll admit that accuracy was poor word choice. I stand by fidelity, though. Physics models for secondary animations add to the fidelity of the model and animation.

I'm not sure if any videogame chests have really gotten it right (and developers specifically trying to get that right is probably weird and creepy), but it's safe to say that's not how any real boobs move.

For what it's worth, every animation in Street Fighter is exaggerated.

This is true. Someone made a post on GAF, I think, about how SF3's animations were better and more expressive because they purposefully animated the characters to bend and snap in cartoonish ways. You might be able to get away with saying the flailing boobs are just that sort of thing, but...Chun Li?

This is a character who typically isn't drawn with a HUGE chest, because all her movement and build is in her legs and hips, to go with her kick-intensive moveset. It's a visual design that works with how you use the character. Unless Chun Li has boob attacks now..*shrug*

This is what makes the design suspect to me, but I'm not very well versed in the franchise so I can't say anything about her specific design with confidence.

I don't know. I'm getting really used to having physics-modeled secondary animations in games. Like I tried Life is Strange the other day and it was really bothering me that the main character's hair looked like a plastic helmet. Chun Li's breast movement doesn't have any subtlety to it, but maybe it doesn't need to.

I see what you mean, lilith

It's weird that, in the creation of videogames (and perhaps a few other mediums), there seems to be a tension between the designer pushing against the limits of technology, and trying to reign in the designer's imagination (which naturally tries to be limitless)

I don't see a comparison to last year.

Noticed that too, and wondered why to even add "versus last year"

Looks like a decent line-up. Particularly for those who've been clamoring for more females in new games (especially in the AAA space), I hope you get what you've been wanting in some of these characters. I also hope those same people will support these games through purchases for what looks good to them and/or letting the devs/pubs know that you like what you see.

Chun-Li always had above average breast size, like in 3rd Strike for example. If it's any consolation for those upset, Combofiend has confirmed that the egregious boob jiggle is a bug, someone mentioned in the FGW that it only happened on the 2p side also.

I wouldn't say weird OP, more like refreshing take on main characters. I gotta say, I also appreciate that most of their designs aren't skimpy dumb sexualised designs aside from Lara, probably. Hurray for diversity.

I think what's more insulting here is how bad looking and inaccurate the boob physics here are.
