Fighting Games Weekly | Apr 27 - May 3 | NeoGAF actually plays games?!

He shoulda had that done before NWM imo, gotta capitalize on the heat of the moment!

Alas, I believe that was the face that happened either at Top 8 or his reaction to the Double KO at the end of Grand Finals.

Of course this comes from the guy who knows about dat MAX CPM

Watching Justin's stream since he started doing MKX has been fantastic just for the hilarious explanations of events to newer viewers. I told him at NWM that we would introduce him as "up and coming twitch star Justin Wong"; got shot a combination of humorous/sad/evil glare from him, lol.

I wish. This face happened right in the Top 8 though, I think lol

As for GAF sponsorships, we could try something for to raise money for it if folks are interested. My personal funding is focused on NWM and Seattle though. It allows me to take care of the players directly and I'd really like the local players to build connections with foreign players as well. So I don't have any plans to send folks to other events currently.

It comes from my personal savings. Cybit covered half of Art's ticket though. I actually chipped in for a lot of players this year directly and indirectly. The JP players I asked since they were with me the entire weekend and Cybit asked Art since as he's also a member here. =o

To be fair, I think I might have been the one who suggested Arturo; so I should covered at least half of it. Would be shady to be like "hey, it would be awesome if Arturo was flown out here" and then stare at you expectantly waiting for you to pay, lol. Shouta and I have talked about trying to figure out how to make the entire flying people out thing sustainable - but monetizing the FGC is...hard (as arturo looks at us like "NO SHIT SHERLOCK").

I need to spend some time thinking about this stuff more in-depth. The traces and hints of some kind of sustainability are there. Is Twitch the answer?

did anybody thank shouta on stream at all during NWM? i don't remember anybody mentioning him. i didn't tune in all that much but hopefully they did.

If they did, they would have used my real name but I do all of this stuff behind the scenes anyway. No one outside of the forum and local folks knows that this is the 3rd year I've done it though, lol

We like to be behind the scenes ninjas more than anything. Hell, there's a reason my twitter account is protected and will almost always stay that way.

How about we leave Sim and Necro alone and get a completely new character that isn't held back by their movesets and archetypes

Art is wondering if FGC Gaf plans on more sponsorships.

I'm pretty sure people wouldn't mind have the GAF logo in a major tournament and show how eSports we are lol

yes. Not backgrounds though

So wait... I can change the art of the characters so I can have the original art that coincides with the hitboxes?!

If we're gonna sponsor someone, Art is a good choice but we also gotta find those insane Japanese character specialist who main Hakan or Hugo and bring them over for a Capcom Cup event. The blow up would be so real.

What? BS

Necro should be in! Dude is the real dhalsim we deserve.

No teleport. Sim is one of the original SF characters.

So?

Also, have you tried Necro?

Yup, he's fun.

You want a Blanka/Sim hybrid? That would be a new FG player killer.

If it's not Necro, it'll be someone else.

How about we leave Sim and Necro alone and get a completely new character that isn't held back by their movesets and archetypes

Even better.

Squigly from skullgirls feels like she is missing an airdash or something. Like she is cool but doesn't have half the cheap shit that everyone else got. High low mix up doesn't seem strong, mobility is weak and doesn't have real zoning tools. Someone explain her to me.

Alex will be in SFV. Bet it.

Well yeah when the guy hacked the game on stream, it was bonkers saying he would be back. SFV has been in the works for a while and the in game roster is definitely complete for now. Hopefully there is no on disc DLC BS or Capcom screwed their chance at redemption up.

Yams, do you rotate between avatars or is it random?

I rotate to an old one before I'm trying to get a new one ready for some event (usually shopped to deal with it, I'll go with my EVO one once it comes around). I'll go back to my cloud with something E3 related to it when the time comes around. I only really use two avatars mainly, this one and the cloud one.

seems like Hamad is talking about what Juicebox's been preaching for a while

If anything, I have always felt fighting games were expressive but maybe at the tippy top, the win is everything. I have played enough FPS shooters to see it also expressive but fighting games caught me because of the off screen enthusiasm and the fact you and your opponent are always facing each other, always on the same screen with nothing to hide, resources and health exposed. You set your opponent up and cash out the read for the win.

To see Juicebox ultra videos early on to the present more measured, frustrated talk about fighting games makes me wonder if its about hobby turned to profession. When I come home, I don't want to do anymore artwork and I have to be dragged into doing photoshop for my family.

Bryan has Necro's model in SFxT, which makes me real curious about what ended up happening to Necro in that game.
'The game has changed from expressing who you are to doing whatever wins.'
Timmy/Johnny/Spike- if you're a Johnny, you're not going to be happy playing in tournaments if you're playing to win.

What it's about is fun. Fun and ideals.

The true SF4 competitors should abuse everything and pick top tier. Hamad is starting to wrestle with the realization that he might not be after the win as much as he thought, because at the top level the game loses a lot of what made it fun while learning it.

I hope (and maybe Hamad does too) that eventually what is popular might also correlate with what is more "fun", especially in high-level play.

Of course, different players find different things "fun" so there's bound to be massive disagreements with this.

For me, "fun" means:
- high skill ceiling
- able to pick all characters at top levels of play
- balance between offensive and defensive mechanics

Maybe I'm reading this whole thing wrong but, I'm not sure why he would feel this way. It's not like Fei Long is an inherently bad character. Even he admits that Fei Long is a good character. It just seems like he wants to blame the overall game but he just hasn't fully committed to doing it. He admits that he has more fun playing CVS2 than USF4 but lets not be blind, CVS2 has some skeletons in the closet too especially when it comes to high level play. (Justin vs Ricky literally down backing for around 2 minutes) Maybe this is just a person waking up and seeing the real competitive side of the game and does not like what he sees. But he does make some valid points about picking a character purely for Match up even if you have bad fundamentals.

http://archive.wizards.com/Magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtgcom/daily/mr11b - It's very applicable to any game.

It has to do with why you play. What are your motivations and goals? What he seems to be discovering is that his don't line up with the ones you need in order to be a top-level player. And that's ok.

Center stage and SBO = no zoning tools? She also has an armor piercing get over here move.

- high skill ceiling

For me:
Good-feeling movement (As examples Melee, KOF, GG, UNIEL, even 3S, maybe ST)

Simple actions are effective (ie. "I attack" or at most "I attack shutting down the throw option" instead of "I attack with an arcane magic sequence that guards against four possible defenses, refer to the rulebook for constructing a defensive input that has a hope of working" - let that be taken care of by spacing and move choice please, and leave that kind of wizardry to Magic where you have a bit of time to think, thank you)

Universal defenses to keep everyone afloat to some extent and allow strong characters to be built. If you realize something is kinda busted and that the character who has it is low tier, something's been done right.

Characters "fit the mold" to some extent. I play a game because a game feels a certain way. (To use Fuerte as an example, if I want to play a high-movement game, I'll play a game built around that like KOF, GG, VSav instead of trying to antiair a spastic goofball with a character built to ST assumptions. When I play a game with ST assumptions, I want to play that kind of game.

Spike/Timmy (Tuner/Nuts&Bolts Spike, Social Timmy, tuning part pretty much MTG-only though)

whyyyyyyyy?!?!?!

you can buy rice in bulk with any meat (pork chips, chicken, talapia) with some vegetables and it shouldn't cost you more than 5 bucks. what do you make as homemade lunches? calamari with a side of x-factor?

why I eat once a day or why I get $10 worth of taco bell

I feel you. 6 cups of coffee today. About to finally eat my meal soon

too lazy to eat anything for breakfast or lunch

Yeah Sabrewulf player in KI.
Pretty sure he's still a spike, he just frames himself as a Johnny.
He was going to play Saberwulf before the character was even considered good. Dude plays Storm in Marvel and Rufus in SF4. He is definitely not a Spike these days.

And I don't even know if Saberwulf is still considered the best in KI.

I love watching yams go in on people's dietary choices. You can tell he just started that squattin' life.

It's adorable.

why you gotta be like that...

I've always been strict on what I eat from a young age cause I read the damn labels and eat home cooked meals 90% of the time. Besides, eating once a day is tough on your body.

Kung Lao in MK9 week one. Batman in Injustice.
Rufus loyalist? Rufus was nerfed in SFxT? Straight to Hworwang instead, first week of the patch.
When he was planning on playing tekken 6 he was going to use Bob.

Yams is all growed up, I remember when he was just a junior.

Also, to be competitive in anything requires some sort of sacrifice, including fighting games.

Raiden and Kung Lao on MKX and a side piece Rose. You might be on to something.

Haha it's all good yams, I respect the enthusiasm. You're the nutritional gadfly FG GAF needs but doesn't deserve.

Just be careful of hostile plebeians and Shouta's hemlock coated ban-hammer.
