Given how poorly FFXIII-2 sold by franchise standards, I'm amazed that FFXIII-3 was even considered, let alone that it's in full-on development and will be announced in a week in a half. What the hell, SE.

XIII might have the spotlight for FF25 if this keeps up. I don't know why they seem to fixated on Lightning. IMO she is a rather stale character in design, and it just seems they want to make her a recurring character in the most idiotic way imaginable.
Course what do I know? Right?
FF13-2 most assuredly cost less to develop than a new from-the-ground-up mainline game, though. As will FF13-3.
XIV will be there too.
FFXIII-2 has been in the bargain bin for a quarter of its original price (2000 yens) since February, only 2 months after its release, here in Osaka.
As others have stated, this phenomenon is not limited to Japan, so it's obvious SE has significantly overestimated demand with this shipment.

It'd be probably cheap as hell. It could also be something only digital.
With all the re-used assets I doubt it was that expensive to make 13-2 and seeing as 13-3 would be on PS3 as well (most likely) then they'll just reuse assets a third time.

I am really surprised they are doing another game in the 13 universe. I skipped XIII-2 because I disliked XIII so much and I cant see anything they could do with another game to get the people that they lost back in now. They need to move on and come up with an all new world with new characters and new gameplay.
Everyone should want Type-0.

I didn't care about any of them, rather I wanted all of them to die at the end. That speaks volume about the characters. Even I didn't want any of the FF8 cast to die.
Well, who's to say they're not doing that at the same time?
SE giving us stuff we don't want over Type-0. Put it on PSN at least.

They were terrible. 13 was the only game in recent memory where I actually wanted some characters to die.

I'd say early XIV was the worst. But yeah, worst single player one. At least VIII had an interesting story with the amnesia and orphanage thing and GFs and the concept of Gardens and SeeDs were cool. And it had Zell. And those lion thingies. And a cool looking Carbuncle...
Maybe VIII wasn't so bad...
But yeah, apart from looking pretty and sounding nice XIII has nothing else going for it, especially not the push A/X to win combat. You can kinda say the same about older FFs (just use the attack command) but in XIII and XIII-2 the default command is the 'let the game choose the best thing to use right now' command. And the characters are pretty bad. Though I kinda like Snow. And some designs.
I think the only reason they are making more XIII stuff is because they already have the assets and it's easier and cheaper for them to make games set in this world with these characters than to make entirely new things.
Also yes. When can we get Type-0? Why do we get XIII-2 and not Type-0!? Is it because the PSP is dead? Why not just release it digitally so people can play it on the Vita!?

Yes, but... the FF brand matters, too.
And I don't believe that the FF brand itself is being irreparably damaged by FF13 sequels. People might not buy FF13-3, but that doesn't mean they won't buy an unrelated game in the future. We all know how long it takes SE to make games from the ground up, so they have to release something in the interim.

Consider this. Within one month of XIII's release Lightning became super popular.
Toriyama must be in love with her.
I haven't seen any character rankings, but SE is trying to make her the next Cloud... though to me it hasn't been working very well. They've just shoehorned her into everything they can including mobage titles like FF Brigade.
But yes, Toriyama loves her. He's stated she's his favorite FF character after all.

I don't think the FF brand will really suffer in the long run. Most people only care about the singleplayer ones so they ignore the disaster XIV was and all XIII does is turn people off the XIII brand. When they announce and release XV, so long as it actually looks like a good or interesting RPG the FF brand will be fine. Some won't buy it because of XIII but most will just move on. If XV is shit (like XIII and XIV) then I think the FF brand will start getting damaged badly.
Like, I don't care for the whole XIII 'lightening saga staring Serah and Noel in part 2 because fucking time travel while Lightening wears armour and feathers and does fuck all' so I won't be getting XIII-3 or 4 or 5 or 5-2 or the DLC but I will still be interested in whatever XV will be. Unless they rename versus XV. I'm already interested in that but not as part of the XIII universe, but because it looks cool as fuck.

Isn't the upcoming event relating only to Japan? Maybe a vita port could be announced but I don't think there would be anything to indicate a western release at this event. (If it's Japan only)

Actually Toriyama's favorite is Serah Farron. And look how that turned out.
That's kind of hilarious, because going off the main games alone, Cloud had no speaking parts that I can think of and had more of a personality than Lightning.

Don't blame SE. They have to make money from those assets again since they took so long to make. 360/PS3 development has been challenging for them so far so I guess they had to do this. Outside of TLR and the FFXIII games, what else have they developed in house (in japan)on 360/PS3?

I enjoyed both FFXIIIs quite a bit but I wonder where they're going with this. If Toriyama's comment (about how he was considering which platform his next game should be on) is about this Lightning Saga, this game might turn out to be for the Wii U (too). Or either the 3DS or Vita. There's no other reason why he would be considering which platforms the game should be on.
Anyway if we want to be positive, at least the FFXIII series is a good cage for Toriyama and would keep him busy and away from ruining other IPs and new FFs.
