FINAL FANTASY XIII-2 |OT| Change the Future

Still curious as to what area we will be playing in. I hope SE was smart and picked something that will entice more people to buy this game at release.

I'm pretty positive it will just be the E3 demo. Don't think SE will create a new demo for us.

I don't think that demo really allowed the player to tinker with their Optimas/abilities/monsters, did it? Not that a lot of demos allow you to do this, mind you.

Interest in the demo is lowering as a result. I can't believe I didn't even think of that possibility.

So I finally sat down and finished this over the new year holidays and this last weekend thanks to the 3 day weekend here in Japan.

First off, I have to say I really really liked 13-2 in most parts. Honestly, it felt like Chrono Trigger at times with the time travel, and I have to say that's a good thing. Add in the fast ATB system and battles were quite enjoyable as well. Its been a long time since I've done some near all nighters playing video games, but going around looking for fragments, and going through gates and unlocking new areas was addictive. I ended up having 146 of the fragments before even beating the game.

Overall the game is pretty much a breeze however, as this time around you can grind any time, and I ended up getting Sera and Noel blaster and attacker roles maxed out respectively at the beginning of chapter 3 just fighting Behemoths. I ended up maxing out everything, maxing out my Kichu, and platinuming in under 60 hours. In the end I never took the difficulty down to easy and still beat the final boss in under 2 minutes (Noel has around 1200 strength, and my Kichu is a monster, literally, at 1500, plus a ton of abilities. ) But it was still really really enjoyable.

The music was fairly good as well too, I was pleasantly surprised and I may end up picking up some choice tracks from iTunes.

The story... well, it was better than 10-2, that's for sure, and despite looking like a Kingdom Hearts reject, Noel was a better character than I thought he'd be. Hell, even Hope redeemed himself from the whiny little bitch from 13 (god I so hated him then). However fluffy the story might have been, it was still fun with the paradoxes and how the time travel worked out.

Now for the not so fun stuff.

Spoilered because it covers end game and some of the more annoying stages.

The ending. WTF. Seriously, to be continued? was there a ton of crap left like in 13 that they can make another game? I'm however, of two minds. I really did enjoy how everything worked out, that I would like to play more, just I don't want to buy another game of it. And the secret ending was a crock. I can see them making it DLC and charging for it, which should probably get all the Japanese up and arms and have them firebomb Wada's twitter or something.

Ahem, other than that, most areas were good except for Academia 400 (huge encounter rate for the falcie and that just made it annoying to get through) and actually Academia 500, not that it was cool, just time consuming.

The only other thing that is kind of eh is that after you get all the bonus skills, there's really not much left to do, as I've finished all the trophies, and everyone is maxed out. Omega is a breeze but I have actually gotten him as a monster despite beating him five times. I wish SE would move up their DLC schedule, and do something like what Sega does with Ryu Ga Gotoku and have weekly updates, rather than monthly. There is very little point now in booting up the game for just new costumes. They are a little too late to the party on that, since everyone who cares has already beat the game at this point, and probably will have sold it back. Although I will boot it up just to check out Sera's bikini outfit, and probably to try and make a Aspir Omega.

Overall, quite easy, but quite enjoyable, with in a way, a quite controversial ending which might leave a bad taste in terms of story, but nothing against the game itself in terms of system, battle, music, and graphics.

I just got my limited edition soundtrack and I'm very impressed with its design, it's so pretty (yet so fragile lol). Very stylish. I'll upload the pictures of it on my FF collection's blog ASAP :p

Pre-ordered the collectors edition. I never had much doubt- enjoyed XIII a whole hell of a lot more than your average Final Fantasy fan. This looks A LOT better and I'm happy to see some positive impressions ITT.

Can anyone with the game confirm how shops are handled? Can't find this bit of info anywhere. Are they still done through save points, or are they implemented through the game's new town areas?

replaying FFXIII to get ready.

I actually liked it the first go around, but loving it this second time.
If I teleport my mind back to being 14 (good ole' FFVI :p), I can easily get into the story and drama.
I'm also still blown away by the overall graphics/presentation/CG. Masterclass stuff right here. VsXIII is going to destroy my eyes with amazement!

FFXIII-2 hype rising, but I already know I'm going to greatly miss Sazh, probably my favorite character in XIII.

God... why they make a very generic covers for the US and EU?

I can't even imagine how they are going to ruin VersusXIII boxart :(

I can't even imagine Versus XIII actually being released, so your worries seem to be with less dread. :p

I think the cover choice was to offer a consistent artistic style to the cover of XIII. White background, logo, and Lightning on the cover.

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
I like that box more but SE on the top left is kinda weird for me. I'm used to the publisher being displayed on the bottom right. :p

2 more trophies to go...

Anyone know if the casino coin trophy requires you to get 10K all at once?
It doesn't, definitely. I did it using the chocobo races, and I'm not sure it's even possible to get 10k in one go there. Had to win a load, take my chocobo back, then win a bunch more.

I already won around 7K in slots, so that's good.

Miles better than the NA cover. Still can't believe Noel isn't on any of these covers, and he's the main character. lol
Good point. All the pink and Lightning in the world can't seem to help XIII-2's sales in Japan. From a marketing standpoint I just don't think it works too well.

The NA cover is a total bore.

But yeah, I really have no idea why they thought putting so much pink and Lightning in everything was such a great idea. They have an odd obsession with it. I'm sure it'll go over real well on Spike TV.

Nothing, of course, is as pathetic as advertising FFXIII on a basketball court.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Crystal Edition, pre-ordered!

This was the version to get, right?

Hmm, once FFXIII-2 is out in NA/EU, we'll be back to a pretty vague state of things regarding other games and their release.

Ten bucks says there's a Square-Enix event in February to hype and provide further info on Kingdom Hearts 3DS, detail the FF Type-0 release plans and platform for everywhere outside of Japan, outline the plan for FFXIII-2's story DLC, and probably (re)start the marketing campaign for FF Versus XIII.

Well, the LE North American edition isn't really worth $80 in my opinion. Comes with the game, OST, art book, Omega DLC (Amazon preorder). I canceled mine and will be paying $45 instead.

I believe you get some postcards and an OST selection which, from what I remember, is not even the enitre OST. So I'd say in your case it's not worth it either.

Composer Selected Soundtrack: CD with selection of music tracks from the game, specially chosen by the composers.
Artwork book “The Art of FINAL FANTASY XIII-2”, featuring artwork across the production.
6 collectible postcards, featuring high quality CG artwork of main characters in the game.
High Definition Lenticular Artprint, showing an iconic image of the Lightning character.
4-Disc FINAL FANTASY XIII-2 Original Soundtrack, with premium digipak packaging.
Exclusive FINAL FANTASY XIII-2 T-Shirt from the SQUARE ENIX PRODUCTS range. Never to be available elsewhere!
Artwork book “The Art of FINAL FANTASY XIII-2”, featuring artwork across the production.

Seems ULTRA worth it imo! Especially 4-disc OST and the FFXIII-2 t-shirt!

edit: hmm, it says nothing about the Omega-DLC... does this mean I'll have to buy that manually even if I buy the frikkin' Crystal Edition ._.?

The game would have to be at least 20% done for this.

If marketing counts as showing off the game, I'd say Versus XIII was "marketed" when it was 0%.

The free Omega DLC is exclusive to those in NA who preoreder through Amazon and nowhere else.

Why is there a OST selection and then the full OST? Seems kind of stupid. High Definition Lenticular Artprint of Lightning? LOL. They really want her to be the next Cloud Strife, don't they...

I would not wear a FFXIII related t-shirt anywhere. Maybe a FFVII one if I was feeling especially dorky that day.

Honestly, doesn't look like your LE is worth it either. When you consider toysrus.com (major US toy/game retailer) is already discounting the game before the release date, that's a safe indication that it's going to pricedrop rather quickly everywhere.

You know the official soundtrack is 4 discs, right? Unless they put like, 3 songs per disc, i'm pretty sure it's the full thing.

It has both listed.

Part of the problem right here, folks.
I don't have a choice, do I? I know it's a bad thing that I'm buying costumes that probably should've been there from start, but they're not. And they look great, so I need them :/.

Is the Omega monster useful at all? What's its default role?

If it's not as useful as, for example, a Kichu, then I don't think I'm going to feel too burned about not getting the retailer-exclusive preorder bonus (which is a dumb practice to begin with).

GAME has the Crystal Edition up for pre-orders again.

Still undecided about whether to get the Crystal Ed or N.A.'s Limited Ed. Mainly want the cheaper soundtrack but the Crystal Ed has nice things (for 50 dollars more in my currency)...

Has anyone emailed GAME about getting the pre-order bonus for overseas orders? They didn't reply to my email after I sent them thrice... The terms and conditions do state that it's UK only but I want to make sure.

It's an ATK I think. Fought it like 7 times and still hasn't recruited him. I heard he's one of those late bloomers types that are only good at later levels.

Is it safe to say the PS3 version will be the way to go again? Just want to know before preordering.

Any good U.S deals going on?

Thanks. It's kind of unfortunate that it's a late bloomer, though.

What's so great about a Kichu, exactly?
Best ATK monster in the game, and essentially, it has the capacity to break the game because of its extremely high attack power, and high attack speed... and if you give it the proper abilities and increase its stats via synthesis and builds. But even then, you don't really need to do that stuff because it's strong already apparently. If you have a strong Kichu, you don't really need any other monster outside of an ENH monster.

I really want to tinker with the monsters in this respect at least, even if I don't want to use them.

A Japanese site compared and found the framerate to be more stable on the PS3 version (not much) and as usual the CGI is badly encoded on the 360's. But there isn't much CGI this time.

The DLC costumes look fantastic :)

All this talk of the game being easier is sad though since I so liked the challenge of 13. However, I am greatly encouraged that the game is so rich with things to do. That should be more satisfying to the slew who grinded turtles for 30 hours to platinum XD

The PS3 version is the best one once again but if you're an achievement whore or anything like that it's worth noting the 360 version doesn't need to be avoided like the plague this time. As others have said, the two are pretty damn close this time around.

On the coins it's cumulative but it looks like you need to have over 10k of coins then exit the machine ore race menu.

I got it like this:

Hit overbreak in slots and got triple 7s and 5,000 coins. I hit triple 7s again that same game but my total ended up being 7,800 because I had to use up some of the coins before hitting the second triple 7s.
I then went and chocobo races and when I hit around 4,000 (for a total of around 12,800 coins)I waited for a second before talking to the girl and the trophy popped then
