Hey at least these look good :lol Chapter 12 also has *some* areas with actual branching paths and everything.
If those branching paths are the ones I'm thinking of (the three circular areas intersected with each other), I've loved them! They really felt I was exploring (that very extremely little portion) of the city, and it immersed me more than I was expecting. It was like a huge tease of how a HD city with godly art style would feel like, if it could be fully explored.

I bought the game because I'm a lifelong Final Fantasy fanboy, and I'm going to finish it. I'm in Chapter 5 right now. Don't get me wrong, there are things I like about it, and I'm not totally bored. But the design choices that they made with this game completely boggle my mind. I haven't played a game this linear.... since Final Fantasy 10, maybe, which I hated.

In this generation, what in the world made them think that anyone wants to play a game where you essentially run through a narrow hallway for hours on end, fighting enemies that are placed in your way, picking up treasure chests that are off to one side of the path, and watching cutscenes at regular intervals? I mean, that's your RPG of the future? It's claustrophobic and it doesn't allow the player to make any decisions. There's nothing to do, no one to talk to, nothing to interact with, no choices to make; all you can do is keep going. Its so on-rails that it makes Metal Gear Solid look like Grand Theft Auto by comparison.

I just don't understand what they were shooting for here. I understand wanting to tell a story, but I feel like a captive audience.

And while I do find the world interesting, some of the subplots feel so awkward and forced.

I'm going to finish it, but so far this game is almost the complete opposite of everything I love about RPGs.

This is exactly how I feel. I'm in the same point in the game as well (Chapter 5).

I've played a lot of RPGs and JRPGs on previous consoles, but this is my first traditional RPG I"m playing on the 360 and I"m going WTF. After reading a few reviews and some comments in this thread, I know I'm beating a dead horse but this game is crazy linear! It's like Space Harrier with a battle system. People complained that games like Fable were too simplistic and casual, but FFXIII takes it to a whole new level. So far the only cognitive skills I've had to use is trying to understand the story. Otherwise, I'm essentially just "pushing forward" in a straight line dungeon for hours upon hours.

I guess supposedly the game becomes an RPG by around Chapter 11, but I don't know if i can honestly make it that far. I enjoy the battle system and the graphics in the cut-scenes, but I'm basically a "Gamer Dad". My time is fairly limited and I can only spend about 30-60 minutes a day playing games. I don't know if I can take two weeks of very linear gameplay until I get to the good stuff.

This game shouldn't be getting review scores any higher than a 6 or 7. In the past, story-driven games like Shenmue got panned for being too linear. FFXIII shouldn't get a pass or only a half-point deducted simply because it's Final Fantasy. Otherwise we may end up basically getting Dragon's Lair for FFXIV.

finally beat the game and I'm back in Pulse ready to get those missions done... and yet I have no idea how to manage items properly in order to upgrade weapons/accessories :lol seems like sometimes I'm wasting them since it won't tell you the EXP limit.

edit: guess this is when I have to check online guides around, what's the best for upgrading without wasting items?

Just entered Chapter 13, so I guess I'm at the final boss. Took me a good 40 hours to get there. Decided to go back to Pulse to do some missions and hoard some achievements. Still loving the game.

People said chap 7 was good at points, and chp 9 was good at points. Every chp someone says is "good at points" is actually terrible in all points, save chp 11.

Anyway, I feel like we're getting dangerously close to going back to familiar territory in this conversation, so I just want to say I'm camping in GRAN PULSE forever!

(thanks for the information on the portal to Gran Pulse though, actually. Knowing it's that soon may actually motivate me to walk that last leg, if only to unlock more Crystarium)

I'm not sure how you could beat all the A level missions without the last crystarium level. I tried Neochu and got 1-shotted five times in a row. I didnt even have time to take an action.

I beat him on my first try and four starred him! /internet brag

Tried again with Lightning as COM/RAV, Hope as MED/RAV and Sahz as COM/SYN

No luck. Even with Hope/Sahz buffing the party and going Bersrek,
Barthandelus
still destroys my party before the break gauge is over, forcing me to loose time healing and never getting into the 850/900 breaks, thus I cant deal a lot of damage. Damn I dont understand... I even equipped platinum/mithril bands + hope is full of those +100 Mag Power and Light/Sahz are full of +100 Atk Power and STILL I cant beat him. I rushed trough the whole damn game with diying only twice (Vanille and Fang espers) and now this guy destroys me. The funny thing is that I keep getting him at 1m then he casts Sentence, and then its just a clock slowly tilking till my death. Jesus christ what's wrong with me :lol , I'm gonna grind CPs until I like master to lv4 all the roles for all the character and then come back :lol :lol

I was listening to the ending credits theme while jogging earlier and I noticed there are a lot of parts that sound like Aerith's theme. Thought that was interesting.

For those interested, here's an interview with Troy Baker, voice actor of Snow courtesy of Final Fantasy Union.

Gotta love Troy Baker. He really loves his job and actually plays the games he's in. I'm actually surprised he's been into the FF series since the beginning. It's awesome when a famous VA is actually a major gamer.

So I didn't grind any and good lord is
Proudclad
destroying me.. I killed too and from as far back as I could go to get Hope his 5th ATB and at least a little more HP but it didn't do much. :( I keep getting raped when he does the Retaliatory Strike. I think I got him below 1m but not by much.. any suggestions? I hate grinding and really don't want to have to do it for an hour or two but is that about the only possible option if I am struggling on him?

Well, right after I posted this, I killed it easily. Just had to be better with Combat Clinic when he went to retaliate.

Too bad he's not that good at playing Snow :O

Beat the game! :)

Liked the ending, but I need clarification on a few things (obviously, spoilers):

OK, so, let me get this right (and correct me where I'm wrong): We want to beat Dysley/Barthandelus because we want to protect Orphan, even though he wants us to kill it because it is the powerkeeper of Cocoon. For some reason (why not????) Barthandelus can't do it.

We all turn into l'cie things (the mutations), but do we really? Was this just a fake? A mirrage from Barthandelus?

Is the second form a merger of Barthandelus and Orphan?

In the end, we decide that even if we leave Orphan we still may run into the same problem and so must defeat it and just "figure something out" from there? Kind of risky!

Is this somewhat correct? Can someone clarify? Also, what exactly happens to Fang and Vanille? Did Fang begin to turn into Ragnarok? Is that how they saved the world?

A lot of this just seems so vague. Any and all clarification is appreciated. :)

Barti couldn't do it because Fal'Cies have fixed power levels and roles. As he explains before the final battle, only humans ( L'Cie maybe ) can grow in power

Well, he was like, super depressed with his life, so sooner or later he'd find a way to kill himself.

Bartandelus can't attack Orphan because Cocoon fal'Cie can do anything that directly harms Cocoon, even if it they want to.

Plot hole.

Yes.

Pretty much.

They both became Ragnarok, they then crystallized Cocoon an turned into crystals themselves because they completed their Focus.

I really wish this game had a cut scene theatre as bonus to those who beat the game. I would love to rewatch some of the them, but I'm not starting a new game.

No one mention YT, as I would like to have access to them in glorious 1080p.

Your best bet is maybe something like this....

http://www.gameanyone.com/game/PS3/5402.html

You use an editing tool to really simply cut out the gameplay parts. Really good high quality videos on that site. I use it alot.

Also did U2's Chloe VA did the VA of Fang in this game? And who did the VA of the Snow?Very familiar sounding voices to me but I can't quite place them.

It has been a while since I hated a game this much. I profoundly hate the characters; I mean, what's up with that vanille chick? Being optimistic is ok, but giggling all the time when the world is coming to and end and people are dying around you, that's just psycho and annoying. The story, battle system and linearity don't make me too happy either. But hell, it's probably just me not getting it. It's a shame. I'm not a real rpg-player, but I really hoped I would like it and get lost in the story. Not this time...

Yeah at times I wondered if the Chloe and Fang thing overlapped. If Chloe (voiced by Claudia Black) is up to date on the wikipedia, then she doesnt seem to have done the voice for Fang.

Besides the teleportation Cie'th stone right outside the entrance? Or
riding a Chocobo
directly there?

Isn't the jump up that ledge a
Chocobo jump
? I'm going to feel stupid if I took one from the
Central Expanse
and rode it all the way there.

Her name is Rachel Robinson and it looks like she's a voice over specialist.

I figure if they went with B-celebs, they would have trotted them out at some point.

Quick question.

I just arrived in chapter 11 and have been grinding for an hour or so. I feel pretty good about moving forward but want to be able to come back and do all the side stuff. At what point is there a point of no return? I just would want to be able to come back to pulse and do the missions and such so I can try for all the achievos. :D

The end of Chapter 12 is the point of no return to Pulse, until you beat Chapter 13. Beating Chapter 13 allows you to return to Pulse

Wait. So if I beat the game I can go around and do stuff? The game opens up? Do I have another chance at the superstar achievement or just one?

You can still return to Pulse and Eden at the start of Chapter 13 if you need to grind.

You HAVE to beat the game to be able to do all the post-game content and trophies. You can also repeat the fight as many times as you wish.

This is wrong, you can return to Pulse at the very start of chapter 13.

Played for an hour.... GoW 3 is less linear then Final Fantasy 13 so far. Amazing CG, and the combat feels natural, wonderful IQ.

Did I just witness the destruction of a city(probably a lot of death people and the group was like, damn I'm l'cie now, it is all your fault!?! Once again logic has no place...

all right, I'm 14 hours in.. at chapter 7 and I need to ask a few things:

1. is it normal to be so poor? I have about 2k gil and I haven't bought a damn thing.

2. is there a guide or something that I should be following for easy weapon / item upgrades? so far all I've been doing is dumping everything into Lightning's Gladius, but I'm sure there's something more efficient that I could be doing..

3. when do I get to do absurd combos? D:

1. Nope, last chapter you can farm perfumes which sell for 12k

2. I'm sure there is something in gamefaqs.com

1-yes, you don't need to buy anything for now, wait for ch11.
2-monsters part increase the EXP and give you up to 3x EXP bonus, then use mechanical parts, so first use monster junk to get the 3x multiplier then use mechanical parts, monster junk and mechanical parts have different icons, you really don't need to upgrade any weapon before chapter 11.
3-if you mean high amount of damage wait until you reach chapter 11-12.

Beat the game today, very satisfying. The last boss was a pain until I figured out I had the wrong party. I finished the game with Light/Hope/Vanille.

1. I was poor for a while too but then i noticed the " incentive chips" and " credit" chips i had that i never sold because i didnt know you were supposed to. They are in you component category and specifically tell you to sell them to the store.

chapter 12 and 13 can be finished in less than 3 hours if you avoid most of the fights.

1. Yeah, it's normal.
PSICOM Dragoons
drop
Incentive Chips
, that you can sell for
5000 gil each.

2. Generally: Boost the multiplier to 3x with
organic components
, then boost exp with
mechanical components.
