Why does there need to be an NA and EU New server and an NA and EU Legacy server?
Wouldn't' it make sense if all of GAF fresh starters went to Ultros and all of GAF Legacy went to Sargatanas?

Unless there is something I'm missing with the servers. I thought all the NA and EU servers were just in Canada or something so there isn't really a benefit picking one over the other unless you have other friends/communities you want to play with (like my friend is joining the server that the FFXIAH community choose).
If all EU GAF also play on the NA GAF servers there will still be plenty of people to play with at all times and probably easier to organise stuff/get help.

I dunno, I'm probably missing something. I'll just be on whatever Legacy server has the most GAF people on.

Excellent experiences of storyteller based interactions and in-character Linkshells? YES I'M SURE THERE WILL BE MANY OF THOSE. AND NOTHING ELSE.

*Forced, enduring smile*

I hate being an RPer sometimes. -_=-

Yes. I am sure there will be plenty of fights over who will take each dancer of Uldah out on a date. Er I mean...FATE farming! Yes!

I'll be sticking with Ragnarok mostly because that's where my legacy character is and I'd like to keep him, however all this talk about which is the best server has me thinking 'should I try to min-max my server choice?'

Nah, it's not worth it. If I had friends on a specific server I'd jump there, otherwise I'm going to have a relatively similar experience regardless of where I end up and it's just not worth stressing over. It's worth it to note where large chunks of GAF players reside and the main time periods that they are active but otherwise people will just make their own decisions and if in the unlikely scenario someone gets unlucky and ends up on a server that sleeps when they play there will be world transfers and duty finder (cross server play) so these problems are pretty small considering the possible methods of solving them are quite simple.

Starting on Balmung for the RP, yo. Bunch of communities called it as the Unofficial RP server.

Good enough for me!

That's cool, I considered looking for an RP shell during 1.0 but instead just dropped in and out of role in my non RP shell with enjoyable results. Some players would get into it, others would make fun of it, and occasionally friendships would be made. Just gotta watch out for those lonely married women, made the mistake of making friends with someone like that in XI and regretted that.

You guys need to stop arguing about Legacy and new servers. Folks will play on whatever server they want and there's no need to be disparaging those choices.

Hey. Hey man. Stop with your making sense.

Anyways, this thread is now way off topic. We were voting on which character I should be playing? Focus people!

J/K. I'm making Male Galka the winner and the Female Galka will be the 2nd character on another server if I choose to do so (probably will because I'm crazy like that).

It is more then just Gaf people or the actual physical location of a server. In a EU designated server more people who live in those time zones will be active, so you will not have a server dead period when you are awake playing. People from other parts of the world have to think about things like that, especially if they plan to get into endgame stuff where it would be a disadvantage for them if raiding only happens when they are at work/asleep. Lastly you can not expect all the gaf people on any of the servers to stick around, there will be drop off so you shouldn't try to rely completely on gaf people for your socializing.

Oh yeah? Well I put in a last minute vote for the female to balance them out again. What now?

I really don't care about being on top of the game economy. I'll play new or legacy, it's all the same to me. I wasn't planning on sticking to Ultros at first, but my beta time changed my perceptions and I'm considering staying with fellow GAFfers.

still not decided on which server I should play. Want to play with GAF on Ultros but I am in Asia so the ping problem and the time difference is kind of a problem.

Is there any JP server where they have a lot of English speakers?

Masamune does I believe. It's the other server I'm considering.

I think I'm in a similar situation - I'm an AusGaffer so I'm more in an Asian timezone than US or Europe, but I also want to be with GAF and I'm used to playing on US servers for ping (also the population didn't seem to bad during Phase3). For me both Canada and Japan server locations are ~300ms ping. I don't know which grouping to choose.

At low levels you don't need to buy gear, just do quests. You don't even need gold, though you'll have plenty of it considering your level.

So, what's the general procedure for joining GAF guild? I'm gonna go Archer on Ultros.

I'll be interested in finding out where you end up (and what elements influence that choice). I'm also an AusGAFer and while I'm sticking with my legacy character, the option of a world transfer later on is not out of the question (especially when I read about all of the fun times everyone's having on a specific server).

Sorry, I was looking for games to install on and I remembered about this game getting rebooted and was currently in beta.

Will there be a wipe?

Well, I've got to admit that I want to do a little bit of RP, but not a crazy amount, and probably only between certain people. It's one thing between quests or whatnot, but I cannot imagine trying to hold character within battles. Especially if you're running Vine or something for better coordination.

The occasional little in character exchange would be nice. I doubt I'll choose servers based on it though, since I'll be spending 95% of the time actually playing.

i think most of gaf who's choosing a jp server is going durandal

I've answered Mature's FAQ questions so far. I'll add my own too.

  • What's going on with the beta?

The beta is currently NOT OPERATING. You cannot play FFXIV: ARR right now.

The next phase is Phase 4 (Open Beta). Anyone who registers a Square-Enix Account can access Phase 4. The current plan is that character progress made in Phase 4 will carry over to Head Start and Launch, though unexpected serious bugs or other problems may result in a character wipe before Head Start and Launch. Squenix is expected to announce when Phase 4 starts on August 8th when the next Letter from the Producer is issued by Naoki Yoshida.
  • What platforms can I buy this game for?
    PlayStation 3 and PC.
A PlayStation 4 release is planned for "early 2014", with the PC client being upgraded to DirectX 11 support around the same time.
There are no plans to release this game for Xbox 360 or Xbox One.
  • Why isn't this F2P?
Because Squenix. FFXI never went F2P after more than a decade, and it's safe to assume FFXIV will be the same way. Learn to love the monthly sub, or don't play.
  • When will this be going F2P?
    See above.
  • Is the collectors edition sold out?
The physical PC CE seems to be sold out almost everywhere. Some places still have the PS3 CE. Amazon is sold out of both, so don't bother looking there.
  • Where can I find info on the different classes?
    http://www.ffxivinfo.com/
  • Do the races have a mechanical difference?
No. There are some minor starting stat differences but this is largely trivial by the time you reach level 50. Pick the race you think is the prettiest or most awesome, such as Miqo'te.
  • Have they announced Samurai or Ninja or (insert job) yet?
    No.
  • Can I play this game solo?
Yes. But if you're planning on soloing, why are you wanting to play an MMOG (Massively Multiplayer Online Game)?
  • What server is GAF playing on? What's this about data centers?

    GAF is on:
    Ultros (new players)
    Sargatanas (Legacy)

New players, or 1.0 players who wish to start fresh -> join Ultros.
New players who wish to play on a Legacy server, and existing Legacy players -> transfer to or remain on Sargatanas.

The exceptions are EU players, who may prefer to play on Ragnarok (EU Legacy) because of the time difference, and Asia/Pacific GAF, who may prefer to play on a JP server such as Durandal (JP Legacy), for the same reason. GAF is powerful indeed but we cannot defeat time zones.

There are two data centers. The JP servers are located in Tokyo, Japan. The NA/EU servers are located in Montreal, Canada.
  • What's the difference between a Free Company and a Link Shell?
A Linkshell can have up to 120 players and functions as a very large chat room. A Free Company can have up to 500 players and functions in a similar way to Guilds in other MMOGs. You can hold up to 8 Linkshells at a time for chat insanity. You can only be in 1 Free Company at a time and must quit one FC to join another.
  • What's the armoury system?
In short, the Armory System in FFXIV allows you to be every available class or job on one character, simply by changing which weapon or tool you have equipped in your primary hand. In other words, you are all your alts in other MMOGs in one character in FFXIV. It's also a limited cross-class system, with specific skills from other jobs you have leveled allowed to be used on the job you are right now. If you're played Rift, you have some idea of what cross-class skills are like. For example, this game lets you use Cure on any class you are playing, but the effect is dramatically reduced and your MP pool is tiny if you aren't a mage.
  • What's a duty finder?
It's FFXIV's name for a dungeon finder. It functions similarly to any other MMOG which has a dungeon finder, such as basically all of them.
  • What does picking a deity affect?
Minor differences in elemental resistances, which in practice is essentially irrelevant in the game. Pick the patron deity which sounds coolest to you.
  • Will I have to grind in this game?
Not in any traditional sense. There are a variety of activities you can engage in to gain XP, such as quests, dungeons, FATE (public quests, see Rift or Guild Wars 2), Hunting Log, levequests, and guildhests. The actual killing of monsters in the field gives very little XP, with the intent of discouraging endless grinding and instead engaging in the game's various goal-oriented activities.

Archer becomes Bard? WTF.
Bows look like harps with one string.
Wait, Marauders are tanks? Ugh, being useful is the worst...
Yes.

Read the FAQ which I just spent the last 20 minutes writing out. It answers server questions.

great FAQ. Durandal might be the best choice by the sound of things but its a legacy server so still hesitant.

Wish there was a busy non-legacy JP server with a lot of English speaking users but that might be asking too much.

English speakers in Asia timezones have a bit of a problem because Squenix has not designated an Oceanic server for English speakers to congregate on.

If you don't mind the server possibly being quieter during your peak hours, Ultros is currently the recommended server for new players who aren't going to a Legacy server.

Alternatively, you could learn Japanese. :3

I've answered Mature's FAQ questions so far. I'll add my own too.

Here's another point to your list about owning 1.0 and bonus items, and include this flowchart:

Gaaah. This thread and other places confuse me. I hear that GLD is terrible, then I hear it's good. Then I hear Marauder is better than Gladiator. Fuuuuck. I think I still want to go GLD.

yea I tried Ultros during phase 3. I had about ~250 ping and also the the fact the it was very quite in my peak hours was quite disappointing. I know you can do dungeons with Duty Finder but I was soloing FATEs and it was sad lol.

I agree SE should have made at least one Asia/Oceanic server, with server location in Japan.

Yea I probably need to learn Japanese.

You are going to hear a lot of FUD about any class, is the nature of mmos and the people that play them. Game seems fast enough though the first parts that I'm sure you will be able to get any classes you want high enough fast enough that it will not mater if you end up not liking the class you are starting as.

What is the gameplay like, when comparing to WoW (both PvE/PvP aspects)?

No world pvp yet. Will be arena stuff later. Is a target based mmo with responsive movement, has instances, and a quest guided leveling path but that's really where the comparisons stop. Been too down on the game so not going to list all the things that it doesn't compare favorable to WoW with.

About PVP, there will be two types, Coliseum and Frontline.

Coliseum: is arena based pvp, for 4v4 and 8v8. It will be available from phase 4.

Frontline: is RvR, this uses whole zones, it's a large-scale pvp and will be introduced 6 months after launch.

Golden rule of MMO's. Every class is overpowered for people that dont play them. Every class is underpowered for people that do play them. In sort pay no attention whatsoever and pick whatever feels good to you.
