As long as I log in before 5pm cat I'm usually good. Wouldn't dare to log off during peak times unless I was done playing.
I've got disconnect twice this afternoon. so even that isnt full proof.
I'm kind of obsessive about accurate time keeping, so if FFXIV:ARR ever adds the ability to see how long I played I don't want to muddy that by staying on all the time.
... Plus it's hot and I don't have AC right now, so I really don't want the PS3 running all day just to keep my place.

I like to make up fake fixes while trying to log in, such as rotating my character 3 times at the selection screen then login.

Felt like it took forever for me as well. Sometimes I wasn't sure where to go, others I had lots of quests to do. I found that following the story usually led me to areas with quests for my level.
When you hit 30, return to the Conjurers' Guild and the quest will be there. Same for the WHM quest. Thanks!

When does the story exactly pick up?
EQ didn't kick you out (at least when it was released). In EQ, we had to ask GMs to please disconnect our AFK friends. I remember this because I ended up asleep on the keyboard more than once when playing the game, not to mention the times we had to ask a GM to please disconnect our sleeping Guild Leader.
Did FFXI kick you out after a certain period of inactivity? For some reason I remember falling asleep while waiting for a party invite, only to wake up some time later with my character still on and no party invite (once I woke up just as an invite arrived, I thought I was still dreaming).

Alright guys, its time to talk about the 800 pound gorila in the room. Does anyone else find it a bit annoying that you can't speak to NPCs while mounted? Maybe it's because I come from playing World of Warcraft but I keep making the mistake of spam clicking a NPC to only realize that I have to demount before anything happens.
That's not an 800 pound gorilla, but it is annoying.

More servers would be much better, along with more capacity as well.
Given that earlier on they're rentals? Yeah, that's kind of bullshit.
you ain't kidding... and set it low, like 20 or 30 minutes. then once they get a lot of the server probems worked out they can raise it up higher if they feel like it. anything to let more people actually play
cause it's no joke, you see tons of people just standing around. i'm not going to watch them forever to see how long they stay there but there's definitely a lot that are just staying online because they are fully aware of the loophole

Some people were logged on for weeks or months at a time, if only because they wanted to offer items for sale from their character while they were gone.
Yet I never saw a queue or full server the entire 9 years I played.

Yea I just got to 35 and story just got super interesting out of nowhere.

For about the hour I was able to play today before I got kicked off and couldn't get back on, there were a good 25-75 AFK people in towns alone that I visited, never mind the three main cities.
They need to kill the AFKing and that needs to be something that is in the game in two weeks if the fixes next week don't do enough.
Well, I unlocked white mage today, got my unicorn, and did Haukke Manor two times. It's a pretty neat dungeon, but the way the last fight plays out makes things really hectic. Spawning so many difficult adds right at the end is cruel. The first time through, the fight went really smoothly, but the second time, we wiped a couple of times.

If it is that scene then you need to have earrings made and then wear them or they will not let you into the banquet.
You need to get the quest "Matter of Tradition" first to make the earnings ( Voice of the Just), then after they are made you put them on to enter the banquet.
Rebuild database? If you mean delete everything and redownload and patch...then I tried that.
I don't know if I just suck with controllers (as I rarely use them anymore), but I had some bad luck with targeting. I would some how target mobs that were standing behind me that I couldn't even see, I would constantly target the wrong mobs, and targeting other people was impossible for me. lol

dpad.. side ways targets mobs ,, up and down targets people in your party and yourself.

Ultros is one of the lower pop servers (comparatively), I thought? Did they not just take it of the character creation restrictions?

Actually I think its the second *highest* after Gilgamesh.
Unless the dpad on my 360 controller is shit, I don't know what else it could be. I'm a level 21 gladiator, 15 conjurer, so I have played quite a bit with a controller, and I still have many issues with targeting. Anyway, I stopped using a controller. I was only using a controller to add extra difficulty to the game, but not being able to target the stuff I want is just irritating me. hah

Don't worry, in a few weeks the population will go down and connection issues will be a thing of the past.
You gotta go Cactuar just for the name alone.
I really don't know, but it's really hard to get in all the time. My character there was only lvl 10 anyways, so no big loss.
Anyways, creating a character in Cactuar for now, Maybe I'll pay the transfer in the future, let's see how it goes.
