The original merger plan had all shells breaking because everyone was technically heading to new worlds. That might change thanks to them going with something closer to option 2, but it still might happen anyways if they use new worlds, but just have certain servers get merged into those new worlds, the shells would break all the same.

Shells will be broken regardless of which plan they use.

I'm waiting for the translation, but Yoshida made a huge post like 25 minutes ago detailing the possible 'new' plan for mergers and if I am reading it right it sounds like shells/friendlist etc. won't break. Its going to be 18 worlds converged into 9 brand new world (A+B = new world 1 etc, it was used as an example not what will happen) and might retain linkshell info and the name of the linkshell duplication will follow the same rules for rename that characters need to do. Anyways the 18 worlds would become 9 new worlds and then he opens up a 10th world for the EU population to go to or for others to start all new if they desired. He calls a small community server. People can also still go to another server if they so choose, but they will be defaulted to the server their community merged with.

Also it seems the new server name and naming scheme is going to be based on legacy items from the final fantasy series (tentative). This includes server names like Excalibur, Ridil, Ragnarok, Balmung, and Aegis etc. So be prepared to say farewell to Lindlbum etc.

Are they? No one mentioned that. :/

I already started too. I think I'll just keep at it and remake it again later. Not having to scroll through 100 inactives is much nicer. Lol

@Riposte, Ziz: I actually just named it Red Dot II. Lol Since the guildworks site is red dot and Renta made it all pretty I didnt name it something else. If you guys want to come up with a new name we can do that though.

@kiryogi: :D I need General Renta back though.

I'm not going to lie, i'd like that, but Renta did go through the trouble of making the site and all...and unless its an easy change as far as logos/guildwork registration goes, we might be stuck with it :p

EDIT: I actually like the Paladin WS. Hopefully they redo the animations for the rest of the WS, or at least diversify the ones that share the same animation.

Much better (as long as we dont get Rat Tail lol).

I like the idea of naming them after universal FF items over the game-specific cities.

Here's hoping we get turned into something cool, like Genji Glove!

I'm sure Masamune and Gungnir are a lock.

EDIT: And while we're at it, can we get some new lodestone character profile images? The default underwear shots are kinda off imo.

Here is the rep translation of the first (smaller) post from Yoshida this morning. Looks I did read it correctly!

Hello. This is Producer/Director Yoshida.

I am sorry for creating problems for everyone with the World Merge.
In regards to the World Merge specifications that were announced the other day, we have received a large amount of feedback from everyone and I would like to share with you the results of our re-exploration of the specifications. Since this is a forum post, and not the specifications itself, this is more of a concept, but until the official announcement is released, please check over these two posts in regards to the direction of the specifications.

■Simple Digest■

The specification overview is an extremely large amount of text, so I wrote out a brief version. If you just want to get a grasp of the content, then please just read over this post.

The foundation of the World Merge will be based on consolidating multiple existing Worlds as below:

A + B = New World

For both existing Worlds, Linkshells, Friend Lists, and Blacklists will remain intact. The Worlds will be consolidated from the current 18 Worlds into 10 Worlds, which includes a completely new World recommended for players in the EU time zone. The 10 new Worlds will have completely new names.

Also, at the same time as the World Merge, we will be temporarily accepting “World Transfer applications,” so if you are looking to change to a new World, take this opportunity to do so.

In regards to character names and Linkshell names, I have written about the handling of those at the end of the next post, so please check it out.

Arent the shells going to be broken either way?

Btw, monster bingo:

Lets see which one of these hits as a boss or job NM for the next patch.

EDIT: Forgot a ? by that Wyvern and a check by the Treant.

I forgot to ask, where is that pic from? Never seen it before and it seems like there might be some stuff from 2.0 in it. (I see Odin and the Cyclops monster from the 2.0 outline)

...I still cant believe XIV is already almost 2 years old. I'm sure alot of those enemies were already planned for XIV long ago since its still titled Rapture. 2.0 on the other hand is probably a new thing altogether, and would have been released much further down the line...if the game hadn't fallen into the hole its currently climbing out of.

EDIT: Grand Company version of the fanfare is much better than the standard.

Completely forgot about those videos. I guess the good thing about those videos is it shows Yoshida hasn't completely scrapped the work from the previous group, just prepping them for a new beginning. I hope that dragon flies. Would love too see mob events like FFXI's UFO or WotG flying dragons in this game. Game 'events' currently in game are far too sterile and scripted, would love if the game felt like I always needed to be aware of my surroundings, even if it was very unlikely I would meet this dangerous dragon or something like it out in the open.

ANd its still not much better, yea yea I know 2.0 will save us.

Will it? After 2 years and a series of competitors which have dramatically pushed the genre forwards in different ways and unique ways?

SWTOR - redefined storytelling in the genre
Tera - redefined combat in the genre
GW2 - redefined player-defined dynamic world in the genre (?)

Oh, and also, Diablo III. It's amazing to me that this game has been out so long that it will have it's relaunch after D3 has already been released even though D3 has been "when it's finished" status for literally forever.

Honestly I play Final Fantasy Games (And even more in the case of their MMO's) for community and world building. Each new game is a blank slate with lots of possibilities but there is enough fun quirks and repeating themes that it feels familiar. As long as the base game gets fixed come 2.0 (including the world map) I will stick around for the long haul.

I have played SWTOR and enjoyed it, but if the entire game is just going to be based around a constantly updating storyline and little other features I am not going to stick around much longer. Hope there is more "MMO" like features along the way for it as I am sick of raiding end game structure and nothing else.

GW2 both interests me and at the same time I keep distant from it, I was one of the few people that was honestly disappointed with the first guild wars. Yes I know its a full scale open world MMORPG this time, but I'm keeping my distance from it for the time being, plus its a F2P model so its not like I need to worry about paying 'more' then I currently am for FFXIV by adding that game on top.

As for Tera... I stay interested in it, but I really don't like the disconnect between Korean and NA publications, its just taken too long for the game to come out here and the last I heard about the Korean version it seemed like it was having a hard time keeping subscriptions and keeping staff so I am also worried about the 'future' of the game.

Also I have no interest in Diablo III, in fact I really don't have any present interest in anything coming out soon from Blizzard, and I have played WoW since its inception and got almost every Blizzard game day 1 and for some reason Diablo III just doesn't interest me.

If you havent played the beta, yet enjoyed Diablo I and II, its Diablo through and through. Soundtrack might not stand up to the past two games...but that remains to be seen. I've been playing SWTOR for a bit, and I havent gotten bored yet...but i'm still low level.

Not saying Diablo is a bad game, but for some reason the 'style' of game that Diablo encompasses has just grown stale for me, that and I don't have nearly as much time to play games as I used to, plus I am almost worried about finding a game 'too' addictive lol (Got a lot of other things I want to focus on besides games even when I'm not at work). SWTOR is a lot of fun for me in the beginning but when you get to end game its virtually identical to WoW. Its all about dungeons crawls and dailies, plus you can only run dungeons/raids so much before they just become an endless grind to the finish and suddenly the story element starts showing more as a gimmick then a trait; but initial value, Love the dungeons, they just wear thin after a while.

The end game is believe it or not the other big reason I am sticking around for FFXIV and 2.0. Its not there right now, but the idea that there is going to be several very tangible paths to end game rewards (in the sense its not all raid or combat related) keeps me around. The vision to have non-instanced and customizable housing tied directly to crafting and gathering means a completely different type of gameplay I can work on when I don't feel like killing mobs or dungeon crawling, sometimes I just want to come on and talk with the community while still getting something casual and tangible done. I played Vanguard for over a year and it was always crafting that brought me back into the game despite it being an endless grind. The continued focus on just the 'heroic' gameplay of recent MMO's has just become stale for me. I want a mix of both casual and heroic gameplay.

Since they've already confirmed the two new raid areas are getting a trailer, hopefully the XIV team can put together a jobs trailer as well. Something like this, but done with in game locations/graphics similar to the Treasures of Aht Urhgan trailers.

I'm sure there will be something for jobs. If not a trailer then at least newspaper 'headline' talking about the lore surrounding the job, we already got a quicky video showing 2 of the new job weaponskills so I'm sure something else is coming. Speaking of trailers, I am really, really curious what the new FMV Opening act is going to depict that is going to get released around E3. The current one is based around Guild Leves and the Echo which are/were the big gameplay and story events for the game, I suppose the new one will surround the transformation of Eorzea and the new threats?

Here is the longer post from Yoshida.

http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/...FFXIV-Worlds-(02-13-2012)?p=552237#post552237

All around I have no qualms with the merge structure now. Mergers are a delicate process that can cause sometime cause more harm then they help if done wrong, I think the way he decided to do it after feedback should keep most of the problems associated with mergers away. I am also really, really glad they went with timestamp as a priority for character names needing to be changed and that the larger 'active' linkshells get priority with names.

Edit: Also forgot to mention one big gem :D

Also, as we look to expand FFXIV, some of our visions for the future, such as releasing content based in Worlds from previous FF titles, will require us to use names previously reserved for Worlds as names of cities and other locations instead. (For example, we feel like Midgar has too powerful of an image associated with it to be used as a name for a World. Also, we would like to reserve the name Gold Saucer for the casino, not a world.)

I also agree. I love the idea of a theme park-style MMO, especially one set within a fantasy world. Give me a taste of the hardcore-style XI play, and mix it up with card-games, house building, ship riding, and PVP. XIV could be the perfect MMO for me if they use even half of their highly ambitious ideas, and don't mess it up even further.

So... is this game any good now?

We've mainly gotten infrastructure changes. We're playing now what we should've been playing at launch, minimum.

It's funny that you say that now. Had the game originally launched in the state it is in now, not only would they not have had to give away more than a year of play free, they wouldn't have lost >95% of the ~400,000 people who bought the game at launch. It's amazing when you realize how thoroughly Squenix completely fucked up the development and launch of FFXIV. If it were any other company than Squenix, who not only had the funding to keep the game running but also the compulsion to ensure that any mainline-numbered FF title didn't fail and humiliate the company, the game would have been shut down long ago. Many MMOGs which were disasters but more successful than FFXIV was have been shut down long ago if you think about it.

Woah. That is the greatest info about all the post lol.

In any case, the final choise they decided about merge is the best they could and they heard greatly the community opinion. Good job Yoshi.

All 13 of the posts are in the Server Reassesement topic, it looks like he is answering questions in regards to the eventual merge, as well as some in regards to 1.21 but nothing too tangible. At least I got that much from my minimum knowledge of Japanese writing + Google Translate assist.

Would be nice if they released more raid and job videos this week, fueling hype and speculation for next week, and then releasing the patch on the last week.

I'm pretty sure they are making some trailers as well. And they should release them in these 2 weeks from now, if they'll release really the patch 'in time'.

Wish there was some way to know what the interest in server 10 is going to be before hand, I would probably consider transfering there if I thought the population would be good.

Edit:- Bleh not even my EU LS is considering the EU server so seems pointless.

I thought the whole point of not naming the servers was to make it s people would go randomly to each server and keep the populations balanced. If all goes according to keikaku, every server should have a good population.

It's disappointing we won't be able to craft in our little hidey-holes, but I am hopeful that it will incentivize people to actually log out out of the game.

Some updates to the new server merge list. Not much new, but the changes should make people who are currently playing happy.

Naoki_Yoshida

1. Character Name Overlap

The decision for which character keeps their original name when identical names clash on a World is based on whether they are active or not, rather than what date the character was created. If both are active, the character which was created earlier is given priority over the name (based on the time stamp at creation). All other characters with the same name will have to choose a new name.

2. Retainer Name Overlap

The decision for which retainer keeps their original name when identical names clash on a World is based on whether the player character associated with them are active or not, rather than what date the retainer was created. If both are active, the retainer which was created earlier is given priority over the name (based on the time stamp at creation). All other characters with the same name will have to choose a new name.

3. Linkshell Name Overlap

The linkshell with the most active characters at the time of the world merge will retain the name. All other linkshells will be temporarily renamed to have a number (such as “01”) at the end of their current name. Players can then request to have their linkshell renamed through GM support.

I support this.

EDIT: Wasnt there supposed to be a difference between inns and player residence?

Well considering it looks like the Inns are nothing more then glorified art house rest stops, it seems there really will be a big difference. The only use they give is a place to log out for the night (Get rested EXP) and use it as a personal theater for some of your past Cutscenes.

The one announcement about the inn that potentially irks me is it seems like the Inns "might" be tied to what nation you start out in. On one hand I started in Ul'Dah so I will be close to the action where I need to log out... on the other hand... its friggin Ul'Dah >< Would like the option to use the inns in Gridania and Limsa as I like their architecture SOOO much better. I hope I'm just reading it wrong and once you finish the Inn quest you can go to all 3 inns and use the rooms, because the prerequisite quests are all the first nation quests you need to do after getting control of your character which means you are directly tied to the nation you started out in.

Fucked if im going back to Gridania to log out each night lol.

With any luck they will give us the option to set our HP at the INN, like FF11 did with the mog house.

In response to a player asking about making market wards integrated between the three city-states:

We’re asking the team to come up with a way to spread out populations more evenly using in-game specifications and will decide whether to implement this after patch 1.21 or to hold off on it. The current server set up won’t allow us to merge markets, so our apologies for any inconvenience this causes. However, you can look forward to markets being consolidated in version 2.0 (still in development) instead!

You’re not the first to suggest this idea and even though I’d like to announce the names before they’re fixed, I have my own selfish desires and it’s my responsibility to directly name the Worlds myself so that’s how it’s going to be.

If you’re disappointed by this, feel free to hold it against me…! ^^;

lol

Oh and:

Just as it was explained in the concept, the main purpose of this merge is to encourage current active players to play with the users in the same time zones. As I said in the previous entry, we will set up new servers if we see an increase in the number of players in future. PR activity will start again in March as well to attract new users.

Some of you talked about this; however it is nothing to do with financing or obtaining new players. (In fact, I want new players to come in when the servers are alive and full with players. When server capacity reaches its limit, we are willing to create a new server)

That should be interesting.

should give us a free port back to our inn to actually make them useful

You guys forgot the free intra city teleport on 1.21

I don't think you are bound on a specific INN. If you resolve all the 3 quests, you can enter in every city INN, i presume.

Regard on the intra-city telepo, i got that the teleport was only in the same city among the various quarters.. do you say the teleport is among the 3 city-states instead? I didn't know that.
