Can you tell me a bit about FFXIV, GAF
I want something a bit more slow paced to compliment Tera, and I think, if it's anything like XI, this would be a good game for it
1) Is it largely solo-able or am I going to have to party to do the majority of content?
2) Is there a big story focus with both main/sidequests and is there a lot of them, or is it more bare bones in this regard?
3) Is exploration left to your own curiosity or does the story itself spur you forward?
4) Is it grindy?
5) I understand your equipped gear determines your class, so can I be any class in the game providing I have the equipment? Or is there a limit?
6) See above only for Jobs
7) There were lots of complaints over poorly designed maps and copy pasted content, are we still waiting for the changes here?
8) Is there an auction house
Thanks!
1) Core leveling can be soloed along with a majority of sidequests but decent equipment and later job advancement will need some help from parties. Up until fairly recent the main storyline stuff could also all be soloed at level you get them, but this past patch added small party required content to the new stuff.
2) Yes and No, majority of the content is sidequest/mainquest related with story focus but it still hasn't been expanded as much as I'd like, but for a new player it should be decent enough. 3 Class quests for all classes (including Craft and Gathering classes) about 15 main storyline quests (Which are not completed since these came out at launch), about 13 total Grand Company quests including some of the quests you need to do in another company. Plus numerous little side quests that behave more like contemporary EXP/Item fetch quests.
3) Exploration is largely left up to you although as you level up you get main missions that might take you to another area of the world, or leve quests that point you to a new camp to use them. But there is no centralized level content in specific zones at the moment, you go to camps to complete stuff or grind, but not because of a linear chain of quests. Furthermore you must 'discover' new quests rarely do they point the way to a new quest chain, you just decide if its worth it to you to do them.
4) Yes it can be grindy but less then FFXI was during most of its career. Leve quests are the primary solo method of leveling up and you get 4 new ones every 12 hours up to a max of 99. The leves could take 4 minutes to 30 minutes to complete depending on the type and nature of the leve but most are fairly simple. Escort, kill designated mobs, kill as many mobs as possible, obtain specific items from designated mobs etc. They are quick and easy content that needs little explanation and you get a quest like experience bonus at the end which fluctuates based on level and how fast you finish the fight. Crafting and gathering are grindy in much the same way but the recent change to crafting does make getting new levels more exciting if you get a new ability, they can change some of your leveling up patterns and there are lots of little things to do that open up as you level so its nice to kind of travel around every once in a while to see if something new opened up.
5) Yes. Your weapon or main hand tool = class. Armor you can equip is then tied to this main hand weapon although some older equipment has what is known as 'favored' or 'optimal' conditions which means just about any class can where it at any level.
6)However for jobs you need to equip the right base class first, and then you get the option to equip a special 'stone' to that class to turn into a job. They designed it this way because it seems they intend to possibly give multiple jobs to a single class in the far off future.
7) yes we are still waiting. 2.0 comes out in about 5-7 months which has a completely revitalized world map, server architecture (which still isn't great but some functions did get a bit better yesterdays patch), UI revamp, graphic engine revamp, and several new gameplay systems will get added as well. The great thing is you lose nothing by jumping on now and with the recent legacy campaign push it might be a good idea to join now so you only need to pay 9.99 a month for the rest of the games tenure. That is of course if you end up liking it. The current maps are deeply repetitive, initially you don't notice it or care because its all new to you but there is really only 5 unique over world maps in the game, that is going to become nearly 18-20 in 2.0 because they are splitting up the regions into brand new maps each with their own theme and looks.
8) the market wards now function almost exactly like an AH, there is still an unneccesary middle man but a lot of the issues have been aleivated with the last update. You can now purchase and search all wares from a prompt in specific areas and can find items from any of the Wards/AH in each city. You also can send out retainers to the ward from all the various summon bells in the city now which is what you use to sell items on to the ward. The old system had you going into a specific ward, putting the retainer in a spot you wanted to sell him at, and then going through the wards trying to find your item. Later we got search which allowed us to locate an item on a retainer and find them, then we got the search and buy prompts from outside the wards, but we still needed to go into the wards and place our retainer in it to sell stuff, and if you called the retainer from outside, you stopped selling till you did it again. Its much better now and you get info like last 10 selling prices, current 20 lowest selling wares of a specific item and now with the last patch we got item search, all that's missing from it becoming a standard AH in modern MMO era is better search filters, and ability to sell from the search prompt as well.
