Thanks for the answers. I'm sitting on the character creation screen right now, and I just don't know what class to pick from MNK WAR and DRG. I'm going Highlander.

I play Monk in just about every game that lets you: FFXI,D3,etc. I played a lot of DRG in XI and loved it before penta nerf waaaaaaay many years ago. WAR feels like it fits my characters appearance the best and would benefit me for getting groups and leveling faster, but I've never been one to tank.

Does WAR tank mostly by dealing damage and just doing provoke?

I mean, I wouldn't really worry about what class you pick at the start, because... you can change any time later? And to max out a job's potential, you need to level three classes to varying degrees.

WAR holds hate with both damage and Provoke. It's currently better at holding groups of enemies because of its WS, Steel Cyclone, but Paladin is probably better for single target.

New producers letter. . . http://sqex.to/Dng

There have been some changes to the roadmap for version 2.0. We had planned to release a new trailer for version 2.0 at E3 this year, but instead we’ve decided to keep it under wraps for now.
(The current version of the roadmap has been updated to reflect this.)

The devs, Visual Works, Sound, PR—everyone did their part and the trailer itself was completed and ready for release at E3. But during our most recent global PR planning meeting, we came to the conclusion that the most effective way to introduce version 2.0 to the world would be with a flood of new material rather than just a trickle.

In order to make version 2.0 a success, we need to appeal to not only our current players (naturally!), but also as many new players as possible, including PS3 owners. I really am sorry for the changes to the roadmap, but I really hope you understand that they were made with appealing to as many of you as possible in mind. We want to place the highest priority on keeping the 2.0 development schedule on track and on time, and prepare a large-scale promotional campaign filled with mind-blowing stuff!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. . .

New roadmap shows it being in August now along with a marketing campaign. . . Current players are thinking wtf are their PR guys thinking missing on the biggest event before 2.0. XD

SE you do not learn .. /sigh

Game deserves to fail if they think they can shrug off their fans and E3 like that.

The road to disappointment continues.

Disappointing indeed.. but maybe we'll have more stuff about 2.0 (interviews and screens) instead only a mere hype video. What i got from the letter. We'll see.

Looking forward for the new site though.

Yoshida says in the letter he will be at E3, so something related to FFXIV will be at E3. What exactly he will be there for is another subject. The trailer he was refering to, however, was the opening intro sequence FMV trailer he referenced way back when they announced 2.0. You can tell its that because he mentioned the company by name that only really makes those FMV for SE.

Well, the public release of version 2.0 is set to kickoff with this year’s E3 in Los Angeles. We also plan to unveil a brand new promotion site for version 2.0 soon after E3 ends.

Something is going to happen at E3, it's just their big media blitz won't happen till likely gamescon now (That is in August) and maybe PAX Prime at the tail end of August/into September. Both fairly large gaming conventions and in the case of PAX, it is a big convention for MMO's routinely. If Yoshida is personally going to E3, maybe we might have a new live letter, plus a possible demonstration from Yoshida of stuff to come both for 2.0 and the current game, we just won't see the big PR push till August and to tell the truth that is always what I assumed they would do. The most I expected from E3 is a trailer + new 2.0 site launching so people know to keep their eyes on the site as the summer moves forward. The public trailer isn't coming for 2.0 but obviously FFXIV will be there in some capacity so I say wait and see, they obviously want people to go visit their new site so they will have something to show off to get people interested.

@ Allard yea probably, I have no interest in a CGI trailer, I guess we have to wait and see but I am losing patience with SE and their constant disappointment.

Time will tell, I don't expect anything much from E3 now besides a Q&A session and a few interviews with nothing of interest.

There is no doubt I am disappointed too at the lack of trailer, its a missed opportunity and hopefully they will still have plenty to show for us either at or shortly after E3. Personally I am looking forward to the new site almost more then I was to seeing a new trailer. My best memories of early FFXIV before its alpha/beta, and for that matter new expansion announcements for FFXI, was always the promotional sites. It was fun to tune in every week waiting to get the next substantial update, the same could even be said for all MMO expansions like WoW expansions XD.

Gamescon and PAX Prime is still a great place to send a deluge of info on 2.0, it may not be E3, but those conventions have become more and more important year to year for games, especially MMO's (Gamescon was where we got the first demo's to FFXIV back in 2009 after all!).

I think it's crazy that 55% of people think the leveling speed in this game is just right, it's waaaaaaaaay too fast IMO, especially when you consider how many people have every single class in the game at 50 already. Heck, with 99 leves, a PL, barely any sleep and crazy dedication you could probably get all DOW and DOM to 50 in less than a week.

I honestly think they need to tone it down, people are burning through this game way too quickly which inevitably results in less incentive to stick with it. I think part of why XI enjoyed such longevity was the slow leveling process (although it certainly made quite a few people quit too, I'd imagine). Do they really want it to end up like WoW where people only play after the latest expansion/update is released and then disappear until the next one drops?

Maybe I'm just crazy though.

The speed is perfectly fitting for the paltry amount of low and mid range content we have right now. That may change (it better) for 2.0 but quite frankly outside of grinding and a couple one shot quests, what exactly is there to do in the low/mid range? 1 public dungeon, 1 instanced dungeon and some of the job quests and some small side-quests. They need more varied ways to level up your character as well as content that won't make you hate leveling slower. PvP leveling (which Yoshida said would be potentially possible), large scale battlegrounds like a campaign or instanced dungeons across a variety of levels and more then 1 for some levels, more daily content besides leve-quests that players can use, more content that players will feel 'compelled' to finish that might take a while in the mid/low range so that leveling right to the top as fast as possible won't feel as necessary. Till they can do that, they need it fast to keep people interested. It sounds like from the most recent producer letter they will re-evaluate the speed of player leveling in 2.0 as he quotes it as "An accelerated rate of leveling" implying its intentionally fast right now and not normal for what they intend to make it later.

Ah, good point. I hadn't really taken current game content into consideration, I was just looking at leveling speed as its own entity.

Just told that for puncher you need STR and INT.

Mind. Blown.

So I guess for white mage you need DEX? WTF is wrong with SE's logic?

int = magic attack

int = boosts damage of fist abilities as well.

Putting points in int will increase auto attack damage.

Win/Win situation there.

So to get Legacy I just need to have 3 months having been subscribed for this year right? I just paid yesterday with the Crysta I had bought around the games release, but never used. I figure next month and month after I'll just pay the sub fee, then I'll turn it off till 2.0 is released.

Will this get me the Legacy chocobo and such for 2.0?

What a lovely letter to wake up to.

Though, as usual the letter is a bit ambiguous. It doesn't support the game not showing up E3, or otherwise. My guess is that the trailer was mostly CG and honestly that's the last thing I want to see anyway.

They would have to show something, I mean it is E3 and it would be stupid not to. If this does come down to it not being shown at all I'd love to see what their global PR plan is.

It should. According to the original announcement you just need 90days cumulative between January and the start of beta testing for 2.0, whenever that is.

Normal people don't play MMOs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Fast leveling is the standard in MMOs now, get used to it.

Back when FFXI was out I was in early high school, and so I had all the time in the world to put into it. There's no way in fuck I can do that anymore.

I don't mind leveling being slow as long as the means of doing it is engaging and fun, but no way in fuck would I grind the same leves over and over day after day or do the old FFXI ways of LFP for hours on end. Not a fuck chance.

I'm going to drop some industry media/PR knowledge and strongly disagree with everyone in here about delaying the big rollout until after E3.

While I can't help be disappointed as a player, I think delaying until Gamescom is a much better tactical business decision.

Look... big, notable games you care about worry about getting lost in the E3 news rush, and often do. You know Captivate and Sega Gamer's Day and all those things? Those are all because publishers want to get their info out before the E3 rush.

Now imagine your job is to pitch a reboot of a 2-year-old MMO, and you need to get the media to pick up on that news so new players can learn about it and get interested in the game. The game didn't really get all that much coverage at the E3 before it was out, and this would get much less. It would get completely lost - the only people who would see it likely are your existing fans, and the point of making a big splash is to get more people to play.

So Gamescom makes a lot of sense. Most companies have spent all their announcements at E3, and there aren't many left for Gamescom. So an announcement can proportionately have a much greater impact.

Also, based on my actual experience doing an (unintentionally) extended information trickle on Skullgirls, I agree with delaying the big push until later. Again, it's not about you, it's about getting new people interested: by storing up 2-3 more months of media, they can better sustain interest from people who aren't already following the game.

And as people have noted, there will be some info and stuff at E3, an updated site, etc. - they aren't stopping the info, just keeping it a trickle until they can unleash the flood.

Yoshi-p made a post saying that in 1.22b you will be able to do Caravan escorts with other grand companies, so this means that we can now do them as linkshell events.

That's fine Rav but we are talking about SE and Final Fantasy here, its unlikely that will go unnoticed regardless, but obviously you have more experience with this stuff than me :D

FFXI and FFXIV went largely unnoticed by the media, despite being numbered Final Fantasy games.

The other problem is that virtually all public notice of FFXIV has been negative, after its reviews - that is people's first impression of the game, and first impressions are hard to overcome. The bigger and more impression this splash is, the better chance it has of getting people to give the game a second chance.

Nopt exactly pertaining to you but it might be useful:

I paid for 90 days yesterday and never received anything to confirm Legacy so I just contacted them. The confirmations for Legacy are sent out towards the end of the 90 days so dont expect your account to enter Legacy status until 3 months from now.

Okay perfect. Can't believe I'm willing to pay 30 bucks for a chocobo mount on a version of game I'm holding my breath to remedy the original that I dropped after a month.

Sometimes I question myself...but my insane love for FFXI will make me SE's bitch forever to let them try to reel me back in with 14 and other future mmo's. I just want that love affair with a game again. :(

Yeah, I got my confirmation a day or two after reactivating my account and paying for the 90 days.

Hmm.

The cs rep told me that I wont be emailed until towards the end of the 90 days and to keep an eye on my spam filters in the meantime.
I thought it was weird because they already got my money and the crysta is already pulled from my account but I just assumed it was because I was a reactivation who hadnt paid since December 2010.

Ill have to wait until I get home to check my account because I dont have the security token with me but I didnt receive any emails from them at all.

I saw one of the Legacy requirements is "register your game by 5/31/12". Im 99% sure that I registered my game. I mean, I wouldnt be able to play unless I registered it, right? FFXIV appears on my SE ID account page.

Yeah, you have to be registered to play. I was listed as legacy the day after signing up for the three month plan, but I've heard others say it took a few days for them. I'd shoot them another e-mail and ask about it if it hasn't been updated after a week.

Lol, after wondering about it all day and gettign wrong info from the CS rep, I just logged into my account and see the Legacy logo next to FFXIV. Im good.

Thanks for the help!

EDIT: I want to run this windowed so I dont have any alt-tab issues. Whats the best way to do this?

So I have the game set to windowed 1366x768 as always. I went to run this too, but it does nothing.

Edit: Nvm found the problem. I had more than one of it going and had opened it after I had got to the log in screen. Have to run it before starting up the game at all. Thanks for this. :D

Double Edit: Damn you guys gotta post more so I can just hit reply instead of edits. So I just played tonight first time in ever, and WOW has this game come a long way. Tutorial is not ass. Controls feel crisp on m/keyboard. Exp chains? Say whaaaaat? Monster levels are told to me?! THE EFFECT OF FOOD IS TOLD TO ME?!
