No explanation of how expac will work cross platform. Return of the Harp Bow. Mehhhhh, kind of underwhelming. Not a shock.


Oh man:

The new relic will likely also see something around the timing of Patch 3.1 to increase its power – similar to the current Zodiac. “However, the Zodiac weapon is still for whoever wants to use it,” said Yoshida. “The players do have choices of other weapons that might be easier to obtain than others.”

Does this mean old school grind on the new relic, or they're actualoy following through with upgrading the zodiac line.

Stupid off-center (NOT CENTERED ON THE ARROW GALEN) reticle is still better than harp bow.
 
I thought that too, but I'm not so sure it's actually a cape.

I hope it's an actual cape. I don't think there are any armors in the game currently that has a cape.

Also I have a hard time believing they managed to run those enviroments on a PS3...



But that crown....

I will probably glamour that out. I didn't really like the crown on the old PLD AF.

YOU DONT SHOOT AN ARROW THROUGH THE CENTER OF THE BOW. IF IT WAS CENTERED ON THE ARROW (A SEPARATE PART FROM THE BOW, WHICH IS THE WEAPON [NOT THE ARROW]) THEN IT WOULD LOOK WAY WORSE. YOU'RE BAD AND YOUR OPINIONS ARE BAD.

New areas look massive, and quite nice, most of the new AF stuff is also pretty cool, serious incentive to level my summoner now.

Their approach to introducing jobs, tanks especially, has made me pretty happy. I've been wanting an MP tank because I figured it's the most different thing they could do with how they had PLD and WAR set up. It seems like they agreed. Awesome.

Yeah, really hoping for some gameplay info soon.

The addition of the Astrologian job brings the game total to three healers – in addition to Scholar and White Mage. The current setup allows for a greater form of Protect from the latter, but according to Yoshida that shouldn’t really matter too much. “Two Scholars can increase DPS so maybe that is an advantage over not bringing a White Mage,” he explained. “We’ll also be balancing the Astrologian similar to that, having some pluses and minuses for each job for balance.

“World first players might have a different perspective to class balance and this might cause some players to distance themselves away from some jobs. However, the goal of balance for us is so that all jobs can be balanced and used and players can have fun with the job they want to play. We want people to explore different jobs because they are different.”

With new jobs comes a concern about group balance – in particular with XIV’s end-game raids. Currently, a wealth of content is designed in a way that it’s ideal to take along one of each type of tank, healer, a Bard and in some cases a Monk – like with the Final Coil of Bahamut Turn 13. This, of course, sometimes shuts out certain jobs from being taken along but Yoshida admits the goal is entirely opposite.

“There is a balance we aim for,” he explained. “But players tend to choose differently. I can’t go into much detail yet as we’re still in development and if I do people might consider their current class being obsolete. For example, in the Final Coil of Bahamut people considered some classes favored over others when they wanted to clear content fast, but it is possible to use most DPS compositions to complete the content. It might not be as fast as some but players are sensitive to these aspects.

I feel like he is completely missing the point on both counts. Being able to clear content with any group make up once you outgear it/already got it on farm - which is basically the only scenario that is possible, does not mean things are balanced. It means you broke the content. I mean, good luck clearing something like T13 in 2.4 release gear without a Shell'd Protect. Or doing much of any endgame progression without a bard to sing songs. It's not purely about the damage and doing the most DPS, that certainly can be an issue but the far bigger problem is the massive difference in utility certain classes bring. No one would of cared that DRG did some of the lowest dps if they had any other party benefit outside of damage. But we have situations now where the utility certain classes bring, just far outshine anything any other class can offer. The difference between a T13 with and without Dragon Kick is stupid, the difference between again any long raid encounter without a bard vs with one is stupid. Former scenario gets even stupider when you realize MNK is also the best dps in the game on top of amazing utility, how can you talk about balance and letting people play what they want to play with a disparity like that.

This isn't about people favoring one class over another, it's about your own development team designing one class better than another. I seriously question if Yoshida does any endgame content at all before it's nerfed to hell when he says stupid stuff like these quotes. There is a serious disconnect between his apparent design philosophy and how the fights are actually integrated into the game.

For those who missed it, A Tour Of The North shows off the new areas. I don't know if that's everything or if there are areas they didn't show but these places look gorgeous, especially the Sea Of Clouds and the Churning Mists. Very cool.

Still need more info on Machinist but I like how support-y it is, I'll feel like I'm actually contributing to parties instead of just pew pewing.

Did you? He's a primal, he just needs crystals / aether and dragons to worship to him. All we did was destroy his manifestation and turn off the allagan machine forcing the dragons to be kept in stasis / alive to worship for him.

Heavensward has both.

The Meracydians worshiped Bahamut, not these guys.

Yeah, the whole "Everything can work ... eventually" kind of just avoids the issue entirely. Sure, other options can do it but it takes more time in terms of lockouts. Just need to raw gear beyond the utility and, even then, you can't gear around all of them.

Maybe we'll get some better cross-role utility (e.g., DK equivalent on DRK) but eh...

I think they'll just add more utility debuffs to level 51 to 60 actions on other DPS classes.

But based on the scenes with Midgardsormr, it seems the Meracydians and Dravanians are linked. Otherwise, why would Midgardsormr be involved with that?

Meracydians are progenitors of Dravanians but it's a matter of ancient history.

So do you think AF2 (for DoW/DoM) is quest items, currency items, or raid items?

If quest items, it means all gear before it is invalidated and AF2 becomes as useless as AF1 once you start getting currency or raid items.

I'm hoping AF2 is either currency or raid items.

They could do the same thing as 2.0- quest and then a recolour for currency.

Guys, it's time to come to terms with reality.
Everything in ARR is becoming invalidated once you hit the cap, or shortly before.
Otherwise Yoshida wouldn't have to try his hardest to weasel his way out of all and any progression questions.
 
IMO is pretty inevitable specially regarding new content. I agree that DRG lacks utility (stil has piercing dmg buff and weaker mantra), but the main problem still is, IMO, that is a harder class to play and so DPS is lower in most DRG's.

Specially since jump abilities requires a better knowledge of the fight, to know exactly when they can be used, I mean this changes depending of the fight, but a lot of times a miscalculated jump is deadly and DRG's needs to use them effectively to fully reach their DPS potential.

Regarding BRD I guess is only natural, I mean a support class is always better than another class that specializes in pure DPS output, BRD means players can screw up most, since healers can easily overheal without worry, and that means groups can easily explore new content. But what's the solution? give other DPS more utility skills (they already have and BRD has already been downgraded in that regard), wouldn't that make BRD redundant or even ignored?

I don't know I like that there are focused support clases and focused dd classes, probably the solution would be lower BRD dmg even more and make it a dully support class.

didn't the new armorer and blacksmith AF show a lot of skin?

you'd think when working with fire you'd try to cover as much skin as you can.

It blows my mind how bad these guys are at designing headgear.

At least the dragoon set is good, but I feel bad for like scholar and Black mage mains. Better luck next expansion, guys.
