Final Fantasy XV Demo Previews/Impressions Thread

How does the gameplay compare to something like MGR:R? or Bayonetta, I ask because this is more action orientated.
Oh and of course, how does this compare to Kingdom Hearts?

EDIT: Has anyone been able to do anything like this? (or is the demo build too early?)

You get only 4 swords in the demo compared to the billion shown here, but yes, it's already pretty similar. It's almost a "hold Square for awesome" mode where you just steer Noctis towards enemies and the phantom swords wreck stuff.

As far as my impressions go, defense and parrying becomes a crapshoot in this mode though as it is.

Okay, I'm listening to the interview with the main FF voice director I posted before, right now.

Some stuff about FFXIII:
- Trivia: Ashe's VA (Kari Wahlgren) from XII could have been Lightning, as her performance was very convincing, but SE doesn't want to reuse main character VAs in other mainline FFs
- Says they constantly received new versions of cutscenes and had to revise lines all the time which had to strictly fit into the same animations and speech durations as the most recent Japanese version, even though they later on got lip-synced to the English VA (about 20% of the scenes weren't lip-synced and they had to rewrite the English lines so that they fit the JP lip animations)
- Roughly 20% of the VA work had to be rerecorded when some stuff ended up sounding wrong later on for any reason
- The whole last chapter got rewritten by the Japanese side towards the end and split in two new parts before the JP VAs recorded it completely, so they had to wait for a translation of new stuff first (huge script, "stood at least 3 feet high")
- Generally got granted a lot of freedom from SE ("they had bigger fish to fry over there, so they trusted us") and changed intonations and pauses that might be impactful in Japanese but don't sound natural in English
- Sometimes added dialogue themselves to flesh out and pad some scenes that he felt were repetetive and SE just trusted them about it ("two months in you're like, hey, I'm kind of recording the same "Hey guys, don't be down! We can do it if we all work together as a team!" scene again 14, 15 hours in the game, so it's my job to understand where this comes in the story, when it's appropriate to happen again, and breathe new life into it")
- SE basically gave him free license to add his own lines ("Sometimes when you get a literal translation from the Japanese there isn't quite as much fun or as much color in, let's say, the sardonic or sadistic attitude of Lightning, the sort of bitter room that she's in as a character in the first half of the game") and he thinks the new lines "added a flavor to the English version that felt really good"

Seems like the price of starting the English localization before the Japanese version is done so SE could get the English version out three months after the JP version instead of six months.

I borrowed Type-0 from the library and beat it. I was the first to do so, too, so there was a code for the demo inside, which I kept.

I'm currently debating downloading it or giving it away, and wondering what the size of it is. The back says 25gb of space is required, but that's likely for Type-0 and the demo together? That sounds large for just the demo.

I like JRPGs, but am not crazy about them.

Another thing I absolutely dislike about the DEMO: scattered random items around the region. I hope this western-RPG shit doesn't end up in the final game. It's just not funny. I actually really hope the final game will play and look very different from this DEMO because it's more the stuff I don't like than the stuff I like. After Type-0-shit I'm also not much confident in what tabata can actually achieve with it.

Falk, what an impressive take down. Work has unfortunately come between me and taking down Dead Eye the proper way. Having watched you I think I will give it a try when I get back home in two weeks!

The demo is 5GB, it's quite a big demo and worth your time, you shouldn't give it away!

yeah I hate the Tales franchise for being the most Western JRPG franchise ever

Man, calm down. "Demo" can be spelled without all capitals.

Then don't collect the random items? No one is forcing you to.

Seriously, Perfobro, we should chat. You seem angry. I wanna chill with you, for real. PM me.

To media blackout or not to media blackout? My body isn't ready...

I highly doubt this ATR will have new information. I bet they will mostly speak about the demo and the feedback they got from it. I think it will be pretty interested to see what they think of the comments and feedback.

I dont want final fantasy on earth... and that's what it felt like to me...

I mean ... there's a gas station... and they call it a gas station... and everyone talked like a texan... It's going to take some getting used to... but its already leages better than 13

Hopefully due to feedback they only change minor things, rather them get to make the game they want then become a mess do to feedback.

I guess this is the day that they show how much they plan on ruining the game thanks to fans, yay!

This reminds me that I don't think anyone mentioned here, but back a few weeks ago SE London did an interview with Gavin (translator from the last ATR), after he got super famous for being cool =X

Seems weird why they would be doing an ATR for the fan feedback. I have a feeling that they'll show something more.

If they wanted to just provide fan feedback, they would have just summed it up in an article to read online, no?

The game is going for a grounded in reality feel hence the "This is a fantasy, based on reality."

What was the issue with random items scattered around the region? It was just generic stuff you can sell for cash. I don't see the problem.

Which means that they're either doing something super significant to the game or that they are showing footage of the things they changed (like the better camera video for Type-0).

Hopefully it's the latter.

ATR happens at 3PM Japan time btw, so check whenever that is in your time zone.

We'll see I guess. We'll see if they are willing to stick to their ideals and only fix minor things such as the camera/parry issues.

I am assuming they will show some new footage of changes they made with the fan feedback?

I hope the camera and other stuff are fixed.

This is going to be an entertaining thread today.

edit: who am I kidding 4 different people will clamber over each other to make a new thread for the ATR

Now that I've had time to ruminate on Duscae, I'm pretty confident that the final gameplay will deliver. A little more uncertain on the story/plotting front after playing Type-0, which I liked, but which had poor pacing and characterization (could easily be due to handheld-focused design). Been replaying some of the Suikodens, and it's reminded me how far a good plot that gives interesting characters breathing room can take me.

Certainly curious what tone this ATR will take. Hoping they can provide some clear, confident sense of direction that's not just reactive. Given how all over the place demo responses have been (save for general agreement that it should run a little more smoothly), I think they might feel justified in just saying that they'll optimize performance and smooth out the camera, then make some generic comments about tweaking and balancing combat and proceed with their core vision. Fingers crossed...

FINAL FANTASY ‏@FinalFantasy 8m8 minutes ago

A new FINAL FANTASY XV Active Time Report with Hajime Tabata airs at 11:00 PST (NA)/7:00 BST (EU) with English subs! http://bit.ly/ffxvatrjp

Looks like there will be english subtitles. Sweet.

They never bothered to translate some old ATRs, so this is a good thing. Even if it is pre-recorded. Live videos are more fun, as devs can slip up on some details they're not supposed to share :P

so we're getting an FMV of tabata instead of real-time rendered tabata?

sweet

wonder if visual works was involved

The first couple were translated then they stopped for some reason.
