Well, bout 7 hrs in and just got to Galdin Quay. Enjoying my time so far. Flow of battles is starting to click better. I think what tripped me up initially is the unique blend of third person action at play here. There's a very small part of Dark Soulsish animation priority at play, where you can't just hit the defend button and expect to be fine if you're half way through a big javelin or greatsword attack. Also, you start looking for tells for specific enemies like Dark Souls too (let me be clear, I'm not directly comparing Dark Souls, there are a million reasons they're different, too) Then there's the strategic piece of constantly trying to manage the techniques and dodging behind for blindsides.
I really like it overall, it just wasn't a blend I was expecting, which made initially adapting a bit hard, and I totally get all the people saying "chaotic." Totally valid.
Where's Falk at?? My god, the music. It really, really is fantastic. Very coincidental Kagari's OT title and the various exploring scores that play with flute (I think?) and immediately reminds me of the lord of the rings adventuring music. Then, at night, there's some very powerful piano based scores that play when you're around bombs and Iron Giants.
Man oh man, this easily stands up with some of Uematsu's best. Easily.
And all the little fan service bits that are FF through and through, I absolutely love. From the chocobo fishing lure you start with, to Prompto singing Victory Fanfare after you win battles.
Expectations are in check for the remaining plot (still in Ch 1) but I am really, really, really enjoying this game. Not perfect, but GG Tabata and team. You did it. You really did.
