that puzzling face
If we had a JRPG in Luminous that was linear with all the cutscenes in-game and looking like those flashback scenes in terms of IQ and VA/animation I wouldn't object.

thing at the end of CH 5. This emotional moment is so unearned and unmoving.

And then the story is moved along by
a text-box on a loading screen?
Are you kidding me.

I could overlook it towards the beginning, but it's just getting more and more apparent.

I cried like a baby at that part.
He was such a well written character, the rest of the game will feel hollow without him. Why even continue? I could easily see why noct would care more about his death than his father's and his kingdom's destruction.
Game of the forever.

I also love that the empire/Ardyn very politely seems to drop them off at the chocobo ranch, so they can do their dumb scouting mission to find the car, then lets them go AGAIN after they blow up their base to get the car back
.

I don't know why you're having trouble here
See above for part of the ridiculous contrivances of this. It makes no sense and shouldn't even be there. You're defending how it makes sense, not explaining why it's even there-- it's just bad.

Why are they even taking a car. It's a car. Who cares who owns it, if they assume it's the royals just use it as bait. I don't get why an army is impounding cars.

Right, these are silly story beats in that they defy logic to a point and seem a little absurd, the problem I have is that people are saying they're nonsensical happenings when the game has clearly set up the fact that certain characters have certain separate agendas.

I definitely agree the implementation is way off at times.

Lestallum was so fun to explore. Although I still hate the forced walk and it's applied to most of the inner town. Also found a magic flask in a small alleyway haha

Yes the Leviathan part is mostly spectacle but dear god...what a spectacle ! Imo the sense of scale of world, creatures and objects in this game are unmatched in any RPG out there.

Helps that it runs so well on PS Pro lite mode, Unexpected the game to start chugging when I reached Altissia but it didnt due to the density of the map but it didnt.

The lock on is confusing.....I hit R1 and I have to hold it to stay locked on? Or is there some other way that I can lock on and stay locked on to one enemy in particular?

the chancellor has either his own agenda (his constant aiding of the group) or the empire is baiting some kind of trap (the chancellor's insistence to the emperor that Noctis has more value alive)..
Obviously, so this is the exact reason it seems silly. Since he's the goddamn chancellor and seems to be aiding the bros, why can't he
get my car back for me? And then lets me go after I've blown up his empire's base to get the car, to no objection from anyone from his side? It's silly as shit.

Yeah, that is a very goofy chain of events...

Are you just doing sidequests to level up, orrr

I never grinded or anything but I used the 2 times xp inn to double up when I had gathered lots of xp

Had to move on from chapter 3 because I couldn't do stuff anymore because some parts of the map were still closed off.

I also killed lots of high level monsters during exploration those also gave tons of xp

Just now reached chapter 8 and reached lv70 now ... now I can do more sidequests so time for more exploration :D

Chapter 13:
Laughed out loud when they revealed Prompto's origin out of literally no where. Where the fuck was the build up?

Late to the party on this response, but
there are signs even back in Brotherhood. Chapter 11 has some subtle hints and build up about it. Ardyn hints about it again in Chapter 12 and gives most of the build up over the intercom when he's talking about MTs in Chapter 13. So... it is there.

Urgh the game can be so ugly at times that it looks unfinished...

The rear-view mirrors have a bright blue texture when driving at night, some hills are barely textured and have nothing on them, and some textures look straight out from a PS2 (for example the counter of the first motel)

I've rarely seen a game where excellence flirts so much with mediocrity, it's very often lacking in terms of visual cohesion.

I just started playing on my OG PS4. The draw distance (e.g, the mountain range) being so blurry and the 30FPS lock is nauseating. I hope it's not just this starting area at Hammerhead.

I agree with all but the linear part.

The way the game feels is like a series of standard FF corridors all linked together via an integrated world map. To me there's very little difference between this agame and, say, entering an area on FFVII's world map, following a linear environment till a quest is complete, then transitioning to the world map to explore again.

One way you're following a quest marker, the other you're funnelled down a linear path.

Both ways have opportunity to include story/narrative beats equally, and while FFVII (and the other games in the series similar in this regard) uses the opportunity to tightly focus the overall narrative with exposition and cutscenes equally, FFVX relies almost entirely on exposition delivered by the interactions of the four main characters and occasionally other characters.

FFVX could absolutely have used more of the former, I agree, but I don't think the fact it's open world changes much at all from the actual gameplay of the previous titles. To me it's just a matter of perception.

I was utterly baffled by that.
To make it even worse, the bros seemed more shaken by Jared's death than they were by Insomnia's fall and the death of the king.

I'm up to Chapter 9 now and while things are picking up, it just makes the seams show even more. Since the game has failed to make me care about the characters (who remain stock tropes), I'm not sure how they'll be able to pull off what is allegedly a great ending. But I suppose I'll see soon enough.

(Given that the dungeons are easily the best part of the game, I suspect that postgame is going to be more successful than the main story. Just a hunch.)

Thats incredibly poor story telling, for the only build up to a "plot twist" to be an npc saying "hey theres gonna be a plot twist!"

No serious why is the empire impounding cars
I need to know
They wanted to capture the group, but when the chancellor swoops in and rescues them (as he clearly as a hidden agenda), they find the car and take it because it belongs to the enemy.

Obviously, so this is the exact reason it seems silly. Since he's the goddamn chancellor and seems to be aiding the bros, why can't he
get my car back for me? And then lets me go after I've blown up his empire's base to get the car, to no objection from anyone from his side? It's silly as shit.

Why is the fact he has ulterior motives silly?

And he didn't have time to get the car because he swooped in under the empire troops nose and rescued the bros from their impending capture/doom.

I mean, I get the problems with the way this game delivers its narrative at times but I'm really struggling to see the problem in this specific instance.

Silly, poorly executed story beats make up the entirety of the main plot. They are nonsense. There's a lot I admire about this game's moment to moment gameplay characterization of the main group, but any time a cutscene or story mission starts I know it's time to buckle up for Uncle Square's Dumbshit Hayride.

Tommy Wiseau's character in the room has a clear agenda, but that doesn't really make for a good story on its own.

Regarding IGN review.

It said in their review that there's a part in the game where you are alone and it goes on for 2 hours, if I am correct I just finished that part in chapter 10 and it lasted like 30 mins most of it was cutscenes. What's up with that ign?

Alright, so I'm grinding these Duplicorns for a Sturdy Helixhorn so that I can get the
Ultima Weapon
. I'm aiming for the horn with the
Sword of the Wise
which supposedly increases drop rates, and I'm getting nowhere. Am I missing something, or am I just getting screwed by the RNG?

I am on chapter 2 and I can't find the MP3 Player in the car to buy. Any having this issue or the item become available more later on in the story?

Your ulterior motives can't usually contradict your organizations goals completely or people will just question what the hell you're doing.
He has so much unilateral power to go against his group that it's kindaaa flimsy. And the whole fact this section didn't really need to exist- taking it away from the game takes away nothing from the overall story.

Later I believe? Not much later though, I bought it ch 3 iirc.

I agree to a point, as in so far some of the story beats have either been utterly disjointed or poorly realised, but to be fair the latter is present in many FF games (even the ones with great overall narratives).

Not saying it excuses it, but that I expected that much at least. The disjointed nature definitely compounds this and makes it more apparent, though.

You physically can't finish the hallway sim in 30m, you still have more to go. I beelined it as much as possible and still was nearly 2hr.

Note: The spoiler ahead is from Chapter 5's end.

I really hope that at/near the end of the game, there's some climatic encounter with whoever the big bad ends up being, and right before he deals the finishing blow, the camera zooms in and Noct narrows his eyes and whispers "
for Jared
". Cathartic as fuuuuck.

It's like 50% of the development time was spent on this feature. It's the one thing that 100% succeeds in this game, lol.

Anyone have a pic of the map completely filled in?

Man this game is awesome. Only at chapter 6 but I dont want it to end. Getting huge MGSV vibes from the open world. Especially when you have to raid one of the Imperial outposts. Love the action combat system. Was a bit skeptical as to how it would feel after the Platinum demo, but they nailed it imo. Cannot wait to see what Square does next with this sort of gameplay, especially FFVII Remake.

So far the story beats havent really been all that great but the gameplay more than makes up for it. It really feels out of place though when they weave in scenes from the Kingsglaive movie and especially the Omen trailer. They just dont have any weight to them and feel like they were just thrown in at the last minute.

I can't speculate on how the game pans out (or won't for fear of accidentally spoiling things for myself), but you're wrong:

Very often character's own agendas contradict those of their group. This is an incredibly common way lend a character more depth or to further certain story beats.

The game has very clearly shown us that
the chancellor wants to keep Noctis alive for some reason, and while the emperor seemed to heed him in the cutscene capture of the group remains a priority.

The chancellor however obviously wants to keep the group in play for reasons of his own. Perhaps he sees a way to gain power for himself, or perhaps he's a double agent, or perhaps he's being used/guided by a yet unseen force...
none of this stuff is nonsensical or silly as actual story beats, even if the way it's been presented/implemented might not be great.

RNG :( keep at it, it took me 3 cycles for it to finally drop, and i got 2 of them.

Worst part about the hallway simulator is how rushed everything else is leading up to it, like
Tenebrae
being literally backdrop and that one setpiece which is actually cool but lasts for minutes.
