I think I loved it a lot because it surpassed by expectations with
Noctis going god mode. The rest of the fight was pretty much how I expected it to play out while watching the E3 2013 trailer.

It made me feel more like Goku in DBZ than DBZ games, I loved it.

So I'm just exploring in chapter 2 and decide to visit the Balouve Mines, and boy these Goblins are so easy to defeat since I'm level 12. And so I go deeper...

and a lvl 52 samurai from hell kills my team. Took me a while to find a back cave to escape since the ladder and x related actions are null. Yikes... did not expect that
:-o
This is why you look go into the quests section and check the levels for them. Once the quest popped up I clicked the quest list, saw the level, and noped the hell out.

Finally finished Chapter 13.

It's really an absolute masterpiece. I hope that the chapter is shown at GDC for years to come in presentations on how to not design your video game.

The terrible audio mixing during a pivotal cutscene was the icing on top of the shitty cake. And I don't even remember that being an issue anywhere else in the game either.

My last hour of this game has been looking at pixels for frogs, looking at pixels for ore, and SO many loading screens just to get around the map. Not fun.

Wtf @ Noct being a dick to Iris. Chapter 3:

"Wow this looks fun!"
Grunt.

"Don't you think this is pretty cool?"
"Mmm..."
To be fair, Iris did seem to have a pretty strong interest in Noctis but firstly he's supposed to marry Luna, secondly Gladio would probably turn his face inside out. Scenes with Iris were unusual, I kind of got the vibe the Noct likes her a lot as a friend, but that he seemed aware that she likes him as more than a friend so there's this awkward semi-distancing he keeps throughout despite seeming pretty happy to see her.

I'm probably giving them too much credit though and it could have just been a happy accident in the translation process.

What? I hope it doesn't go downhill. I'm actually loving the game so far.
Everything up to that chapter was either fun or at least passable.

It's just an inexcusable slog of a chapter that serves no purpose other than to annoy the player and pad out the length of the game.

Poor audio mixes definitely haven't helped the game.

It gets so much worse. So much fucking worse. Holy shit.

It's not great yeah. I was aware it was apparently bad. On first glance I thought 'This isn't so bad, just a bit lame' then it started to drag a bit.
Then they started dropping in some pretty tough stuff with little way to defend and burning through my items. Briefly I was lulled into a sense of security again only to get slammed back into the ground face first. Then a boss with no items which I barely made it through. Then another boss, and this one isn't fucking about at all. Honestly I'm surprised I made it.

I sure as hell won't be replaying the late chapter of this unless I do another run with way over leveled characters one day. Not only is it bad game design in general it's an awful place to have this kind of spike. There's nowhere to fix it with leveling.

Chapter 13 isn't bad in theory, it just goes on far too long.

Yeah had it been much shorter it would have been ok. Plus it did need a bit of balancing. My complaint would be they set their tone and conveyed their point with the area early on and it set in fully with over an hour left of trudging through that hell hole. I liked what it was supposed to convey however and think it did an ok job of it.

Ignis and Prompto are made out of glass I think, they are constantly in danger despite me equipping them with things to increase their defense and hp. :(

Over the Hill from FF IX make an awesome driving song btw :p

For those of yo that didn't like it, why didn't you?

I thought it was pretty epic.
I thought it felt very janky with the camera getting in the way a lot (to be fair I had an early copy with no patch 1.02 so that might have improved), and unfinished.
It doesn't help that it was the main part that was shown in the 2013 target render trailer.

What you needed to do during the first part wasn't very clear either and then it was over with very little meaningful input. It didn't feel well designed / polished at all and needed more time in the oven.

That doesn't mean that it wasn't an epic moment, it definitely was and the music was awesome. I just couldn't get over how bad the actual gameplay was to me.

Did we watch a different trailer?

Did you see Noctis actually attacking Leviathan in that trailer? All we saw was a bunch of warping around and killing soldiers. When I watched the E3 trailer I saw a visually awesome setpiece, not an awesome battle. Anything else comes from imagination. I did not expect anything else than what I saw. The game gave me that, and also Super Saiyan Noctis, so I'm pretty satisfied! :)

Papercuts

fired zero bullets in the orphanage.

Literally just did this part and yeah, wow. The best part is how it doesn't match up with your choice options whatsoever.

"I love the breeze here!"

*AUDIBLE SIGH*

then at the end

Haven't had fun like that since we were kids, thanks noct!"

"Thanks, I had fun too!"

amazing.

Anyone else prefer Noctis' casual clothes? Playing with the jacketed version and it give the game a really odd feel (in a good way), like the normal style adds to the "fantasy based in reality" vibe.

I do wish there were more costumes though. Dress up is fun.

Wait, you said it played out exactly how you saw in the trailer...

and now you say that what you saw was literally the exact opposite. Noctis was supposed to be helping leviathan by stopping the Imperial soldiers. It even was in the context before the mission where they talk about how they needed to stop the Imperials from using those spears on Leviathan, yet they didn't stop anything and just straight up killed Leviathan.

I dunno, to me, it seems like they had it all planned out, and then did a last minute change to some stupid God of War QTE boss fight.

I really never saw it that way only. Indeed it was about Noctis trying to keep Leviathan away from the Empire, but I also saw it as trying to stop her (She was obliterating Altissia, after all).

Finished Chapter 9 -
WTF just happened? Why did my game suddenly turn into Bayonetta with that Leviathan boss battle? And they just kill Luna like that? I mean, I would'a liked to see some time spent between Noct and Luna before shit hit the fan. The drama doesn't feel quite earned imo. Still, Altissia was fantastic.

Chapter 9 END

AHAHAHHAHAHA

Wait for the full game they said

Maybe she's strong they said

Maybe she's not a plot device they said

Fridged!!!

AHAHAHAHA

I've been delaying chapter 9 for hours you guys are scaring me now <_<
Get it over with so we can find out what you think.

The biggest issue with that scene isn't
merely that she's fridged. The problem is that the drama and heartache feels almost wholly unearned because of the narrative progression.

I made fun of Jarred's death being this big emotional hooey, but honestly that death isn't much worse than this one. There's hardly any actual investment into it. It's a very unearned payoff honestly, and it's hard to muster up caring about anyone's fate in this story outside of maybe the bros, Iris and Aranea.

Yeah,
there was no build up, and, honestly, I need to be more attached to Luna before I would be more emotionally affected by her death. It definitely feel like they cut a whole lot out of the game.

The whole delivery is awful in any way, they way they treated Luna, the suposed drama of a couple the game barely dedicates 2 minutes to explain their relationship. Did they love each other? It was just respect? Friendship? I don't know what to make of them, so I can't feel any attachment and the whole scene just lacks emotional impact.

But who cares. I'm here for the "I told ya!"

Pretty much,
when she took the dagger in the gut, it was of an 'OH SHIT' moment and more of a 'Really?? Okay then.' kinda reaction out of me. I wanted to give a shit, but couldn't.

I'm getting absolutely owned by
Deadeye
. I'm level 14....too soon?

I just used the copius amount of fire element outside his area to craft up a double cast fira spell , I threw that at a barrel as soon as he jumps off his perch and he lost 50% of his health.

I love this game guys , it doesn't really get going until the third chapter and the battle system really does take a little while to click (it's very easy to get complacent against some enemies and then constantly get stomped against others) but I'm currently 10 hours in and it's the most fun I've had with this series in 10 years. I mean, I guess since there was only really 1 mainline single player entry since then that probably doesn't say much but either way , this actually feels like a legit FF game where FFXIII just felt like a CG tech demo with very little gameplay.
