The post-game dungeons are very disappointing. Long dungeons with identical design that are incredibly visually dull, along with repeated encounters with annoying enemies like bombs and coeurls.

So I reached (story spoilers)
Insomina
in Chapter 14, and I have to say I think I might need to go do some grinding. Seems like a big bump in both level and difficulty here. As for levels, my
Noctis is level 36, but my Prompto and Ignis are only level 31 because they die literally every fight so they rarely get exp
. So I think that's probably too low for now.

Time to go do some more sidequests, I guess. I only did about 5 hunts and 5 other quests before taking direct aim at the story. It appears to have come back to bite me now.

I mean, that lvl 72 creature - goddamn he wiped me hard.

Anyone else finding the game to be challenging, but at the same time not challenging? It's weird. Like, the actual fights are pleasantly tough, but at the same time I never feel like I'm in danger of getting a game over since I'm so stocked with Elixrs and Megalixrs and Phoenix Downs and Mega-Phoenixes that I can pretty much withstand anything.

That's fine though, since given the way the game's checkpoint system works, getting a game over would likely result in a ton of lost progress.

The game desperately needed a cooldown timer on Phoenix Downs and Megalixers to add a sense of urgency / danger. If you had to hold out for 15 seconds having used a megaphoenix it would be seriously exciting. As it is you just load up on healing items and chip away, for some bosses up to 15 minutes at a time, healing as you go.

Also, it seems there is a cooldown on using items(R2)? If my entire party gets poisoned am I pretty much fucked cause I can only use antidote on one or 2 guys before the other 2 die?

I might be underleveled but sometimes I will be fighting a difficult hunt and I get ambushed by Imperial snipers outta nowhere. I have to use Regroup and a Hi Potion and then I can't really do anything else due to the cooldowns even though Im fully stocked with potions.

I'm trying to remember if I ever experienced a Game Over. I don't think I did.

Fuck that shit. :p Alas, it looks like no one has bothered to rip the theme that plays outside of battles during that chapter which is a shame because it's even worse.

I think you're more or less expected to skip the level 72 enemy. I think you should be fine around 40.

Go through loading screens and a long drive to get to a photo spot in the middle of nowhere for a quest > day turns to sunset 10 steps before I reach the quest marker > prompto: "the lighting's bad, lets try again tomorrow"

What are you talking about, this track is clearly from a Resident Evil game.

Speaking of that part, one of the things that really drove home how shoddy much of this game is is that if you use Type C controls, the various QTEs that appear in this chapter get remapped from circle to R2. But because of the nature of the R2 button being a trigger, you can't successfully complete them in time any more. Just a pathetic oversight, really.

I think you're more or less expected to skip the level 72 enemy. I think you should be fine around 40.

Ah, thanks. I thought he might be a precursor of things to come. The reward for beating him was stupidly low, too. 4000 exp and a megalixer.

Chapter 13 is sucking the life out of me.

I guess is appropiate,
since you get Death in this chapter
huehuehue

...this deserves another half point less, now game is a 6.5.

So I'm level 34 party. Casually exploring the fields doing some low levels missed sidequests, and get a lvl 76 mech dropped on me. Thought I could take it, but boy was I wrong.

I have run from battles so much in this game.

Chapter 13 was awful, it really was, but I maintain that Chapter 9 was by far the low point of the game. My controls bugged in chapter 13 so I couldn't even complete some sections of it until I realised it was a bug holding me back. 40 minutes in the same room fighting the same enemy. And I STILL think chapter 9 is worse!

As for me, I'd give the game a 4/10 but I've still got a little bit to go.

Anyone else kinda underwhelmed by the graphics? Final Fantasy X-XIII all had a wonderful blend of high-end graphics and gorgeously-painted art. FFXV is leaning way into graphics. It's like the goal was to emulate the look of Advent Children, but the tech isn't quite good enough to pull it off. So it looks like a failed attempt at a more realistic style, instead of the visually amazing painted textures and colorful art with lots of special effects that were in the previous games. I think FFXIII looks better overall, but this game isn't ugly by any means.

Also, it doesn't seem to have the Square-level of polish that was in their previous games. Weird camera, janky animations at times, some glitches, etc.

All that said, I like what I've played so far quite a bit. The battle system is rad af.

Yes, that's fair, but I think people are underselling just how poor a level
Altissia
in chapter 9 was, or how shockingly poor
Leviathan
was as a boss. Both were way below even mediocre standard. Add that to the story in that chapter and I wanted to check out for good. (And honestly, emotionally I checked out for good at that point and have only played since then for completion's sake and to return to the open world to get some enjoyment out of that. I couldn't give a shit what happens any more and even stopped avoiding spoilers post chapter 9. That said, I haven't actually run into the endgame spoilers, so there's that.)

I think the game looks amazing on the higher rez mode on the pro but I agree that the graphics can look a bit messy at times but when it works the game is on another level compared to other open world games the lighting in particular is fantastic.

i'm playing the game on the lite mode and the IQ is awful,it's a real shame becasue the assets are great but they lose a lot in this mode.

Yeah, you probably are. Then again, I'm probably over leveled. I'm currently at level 52 in chapter 7.

Wow driving in this game totally kill my enjoyment. Need to stop half way due to running out of gas or it is dark. Not to mention the horrendous speed. Who think these little conditions is a good thing?

Almost 7 hours in, level 18 and in chapter 3. Really enjoying my time so far. It feels incredibly satisfying blocking and parrying one right after another when there are tons of enemies.

Don't stress if you find the
unlimited gas perk
you should be fine... Kappa

As someone who is still in chapter 3, but has played for 18 hours just hunting monsters and doing sidequests, I'm still really liking the game. Judging from the opinions here, like many other open world RPGs, the main questline isn't the selling point and is actually detrimental in some ways.

My only major complaints are:

1. General tedium of everything having an upkeep. Gas for your car, rental time for chokobos, magic energy, resting for exp, etc. Very MMO-esque and annoying for such a lengthy game.

2. Combat still feels unrefined and clusterfucky, even with Wait mode. I still prefer it to turn-based, but Square should have paid more attention to Bloodborne and Dragon's Dogma if they wanted fast, stylish combat that was still strategic and comprehensible.

3. Ignis, stop telling me it's dangerous to drive at night, please. This seems like a dialogue that should have happened once, but bugged out and now happens every time I try to drive in the dark.

I also have boats of AP and no idea what to spend it on. Can't wait until people start coming up with legit builds.

On Chapter 9 now, I'm still in awe that the game still hasn't even bothered to touch the subjects of the Empire's nature or motivation, what the fuck an Oracle is and why they don't want her speaking in public, or anything at all really.

Basically so far it's akin to "go on about and collect the chaos emeralds, and there is some sort of cliched japanese video game priestess you should marry because...because....hey look there a sidequest!" and that's it

Worst thing is the boys even made it sound they have no more clue than I about the whole thing but they never ask any questions

It's silly. The chancellor bits are the worst offender. There's no stakes. Don't get why (chapter 5)
Ravus let them go
, either.

Yeah, that's another problem I have with the combat.

They kind of wanted to design a skill-based system, but at the same time it's FF so it needs to be easy. So everything in the main path can pretty much be cheesed with recovery items. But since you can do it and avoid damage altogether by phasing, they balanced it with everything outputting an absurd amount of damage when you do get hit [which incidentally becomes a big problem in endgame content because your party members can't phase or point-warp to save their lives and you can't position them so they end up dying to pretty much everything].

At the same time, the game doesn't really take the time to teach you the intricacies of its system so you can be awful at it all the way through and still finish it just fine.

I actually have 2 friends who are hardcore jRPG fans, who finished it without understanding any of the fights and they both thought that the battle system was utterly terrible. Even I didn't really enjoy most of the bosses while going through it and looking back it's mostly because I didn't understand how to take advantage of the battle system back then. I think I'd enjoy a second playthrough a lot more.

I don't know, it's a weird game but that's part of its peculiar charm I'd say.

I'm really enjoying what I've played so far, but now I understand why the majority of scores are just shy of being outright great. Game has some significant caveats.

I watched the movie at the beginning of the week, and damn, that has already benefited my enjoyment of the story so much. Which is to say, that it's conveyed badly in-game, and the whole backdrop of political intrigue is almost entire skirted over (as of chapter 2). If they were going to insert movie footage into a 'highlights' package anyway, they could have at least took the introduction narration, which at least quickly established the details of the conflict.

I still haven't reached a point where any of that has even attempted to be explained,
the introduction of the ring would mean literally nothing to anyone who just plays the game. And Noctis already has much more grounding to me, simply because I understand how magic users are still pretty special, even in this world. Not to mention the added subtext of his initial journey being doomed from the very start.

The tutorials needed to be implemented into the game proper. Not that things have been challenging, but precisely because of that, everything is so unsatisfying if you don't understand all the systems at play. It all made the beginning of the game feel a whole lot more of a passive experience than it actually is.

I've really liked my time with it, but it gives a bad first impression for the uninitiated. I wouldn't be surprised to find a lot of confused people in this thread!

This might be a stupid question, but can someone clarify exactly what this means on the Acension Grid?

Health Level — Increase HP of each party member by twice the number of levels gained. The effect of similar abilities do not stack.

Does this mean I shouldnt use this until the end or does it not matter?

In my mind, its telling me:

"Well, you've earned 15 levels so we'll double it."

I dont quite understand it.

It's a multiplier to your current level that gets added to your stats so it's fine to unlock it now, it will scale up.

(I don't think they're worth it though and still haven't unlocked them - food has a bigger impact on your stats)

This game and its combat.... Wow. I enjoy flanking an enemy and getting the cool animations to play out.

I thought I would get sick of the coop attacks, but they are all so awesome.

Anyone else have the problem of saving too many photos? I'm only on chapter 6 and already at max photos. spent 30 minutes deleting some, now thinking of backing up the rest to Facebook.

However, the daunting task of doing it photo by photo for the upload to Facebook seems like a bit much. Wish there was a button you could click to save them all to your HD. Or a batch upload button.

Really want a big photo album of my adventure to share with friends.

It's kinda weird that they don't give like a quick overview at least, or even a kind of summary/encyclopedia accessible via the menu a la the Datalog in FFXIII. Would be useful considering it does mostly just drop you in the middle of things with practically zero exposition. xP

The game is one of a kind for a blockbuster AAA game, though, focusing on that brotherhood between its characters so attentively with the plot and world-building in the background. But yeah, certain story elements if refined would've turned its narrative from decent to great...though I have yet to have a complete impression 'til I beat it.

Has anyone flipped difficulty to Easy?

I've done well on Normal (and even Hard!) for action RPGs in the past, but I'm getting absolutely railed in this game on level-appropriate content. Something just isn't clicking for me I guess. Getting so frustrated.

I kind of just want to do away with the difficulty barrier and experience the story and journey like everyone else. I've been stuck on the god damned second dungeon in the game for like, hours. I feel pathetic.

Just booted the game up and damn, they used the theme from the trailer a decade ago. Wow.

I already know this is gonna be dope.

This game is amazing. It really is FF12-2 IMO.

Chapter 2 took me 40 mins, lol.

Now I am in Chapter 3, LVL11, after 4 hours of gametime, 0 APs spent and I am loving it. The world is so fucking VAST... amazing, really amazing.

Cannot wait to just roam around the countryside discovering shit & stuff.

Biggest problems so far:

- no monster encyclopedia
- slow-ass Regalia
- monster do not drop Gil?
- combat (Hard) seems so far: warp-strike, mash B (Heavy Sword), warp-strike, mash B (Heavy Sword) rinse & repeat, Never used anything besides the Heavy Sword so far. Feels bad-ass like Warrior class in Dragon's Dogma.

Which hotel? I got a dialogue with Prompto, he said he wanted to sleep on a hotel bed.

He cost me 5000g and got no scene.

Idk if it's random or not, but for me it was at the first hotel you can stay at, the Longwythe rest area in Leide. I'm still in chapter 3. lol

"Wanderlust" doesn't play anywhere near as much as it should, given that it's the nearest thing we have to a world map theme. It's so beautiful too.

Speaking of world map themes, the airship themes from FFVII-IX are the perfect accompaniment to driving. Phon Coast is great to drive to as well.

I can't remember the name, but it's the motel at the rest stop between Hammerhead and Galdin Quay. It's a great scene.
