3 hours in. This game is such a design mess.

The art design and direction is all over the place. Greasy blue collar car mechanics in a desert garage right outside an extremely futuristic-clashed-with-medieval city, and I'm driving a sleek black car but everyone is in black or leather vests and chain wallets. There's humongous air ships but the prince has a car that breaks down. I'm taking side quests from cats and I'm retrieving gems for reporters. It just doesn't feel like a cohesive game world or reality, it feels like a mess. Why are these four royal subjects camping like poor-ass Boy Scouts everywhere and why did the king send them broke af? Yet my random British friend can cook amazing dishes by some rocks in the desert. Why are my destinations sometimes in the middle of the wilderness so I have to run my royal ass out there against all kinds of nonsense creatures and robots that spawn from nowhere? The game world is downright uncohesive and an uglier game experience as a result. Not to mention the fact like none of the characters have shadows. The lighting is so poor on regular PS4, everything is a flat shade. And I don't like that extremely nice CG cutscenes are mixed around real-time. I think I'm getting Kingslaive cutscenes but I don't even know. It seems like they were just thrown in.

The combat is fun but not nearly as fun as kingdom hearts. The pressing circle to win feature was not the best idea. There's some depth but I'm not too sure yet how to precisely control it.

I hope it gets better because right now it's just an ugly result of cool ideas left behind from Nomura'a brain.

So I can't save the game even though I'm not in a dungeon or during some mission. Any ideas guys? TIA

What are you currently doing now? Where are you? Are you on a chocobo lol? Because I too have moments where I'm temporarily unable to save, but I dunno, usually quickly fixes itself, namely when I stop all movement.

What's wrong with having a car? Or helping out a cat? Or camping? And they didn't start out "broke af", I believe they used the money they had on them to fix their car.

But yea, I dunno, most of your post feels a bit like nitpicking imo. It's a "fantasy based on reality", so of course there's going to be some clashes of stuff like looks like it could exist in real life, against the more fantastical stuff that you commonly see in this game. At any rate, it's only going to get weirder, so enjoy. :p

They're broke af if they have such a grand palace but they went broke on fixing a car or having a shitty car in the first place. The kingdom has airships but I, on a very dangerous and important diplomatic mission, am road tripping in a car that breaks down right outside the city? Lol

You're a prince on an urgent mission to unite two nations but wait you're going to get a stray cat some food.

You're a PRINCE so you're going to sleep on the ground in the desert instead of somewhere nice.

Like it's just ridiculous. None of the concepts agree realistically.

Ugh, if it only gets weirder, we will see how I enjoy it. It just comes off as tasteless design to me.

The game is simply not for everyone... I love all the weird stuff in this game. They nudge it above Witcher 3 for me even though I know W3 is objectively a better game.

You've not paying attention.

You are a Prince of a nation that is pretty much sealed off from the rest of the world. When you reach the first store in the game, you are told that your nation's money is not worth damn in the outlands. Your characters don't even know what "Gil" is.

That's why you are broke. Your position as Prince means something to certain characters, but the rest of the world don't give a damn about your heritage. They belong to lands conquered by your enemies. You hold no power in these lands.

You're right, I totally missed that, but the intro story is told in a horrible way. I don't remember Regis saying that at all. It was just a badly done goodbye scene.

The whole car break down was a forced plot point to make me fight monsters on errands.

The arbitrary and constantly juxtaposed design of the characters and motives and art of the world is just off-putting.

People knocked FFXIII for including a lot in the Datalog but I miss it. It was interesting and lots of cool things to read. No bestiary sucks too, for example FFXII bestiary was incredible and the hunt descriptions were awesome too, both of which XV lacks.

Hahaha yeah that's the kind of stuff that's just easy to miss imo and isn't best relayed to the player, but when you think about it it is a unique dynamic. Like here you are, this royal heir with your own royal entourage but only in the context of your home land, which sits snugly in its own corner. So with it behind you you're just a ragtag group of hitchhikers with some cool magic. It's an intriguing premise.

That said I only wish it was hit home a bit more. xP Won't speak too much of things 'til I beat the story though.

I can totally see being offput by the juxtaposition of odd fantasy/modern elements...it's not for everyone...

...but I can't see people being turned off who know what FF is and who have played games like FFVII or VIII... that's essentially what those games were... knights and magicians driving around in cars and motorcycles.

Putting aside issues of aesthetics, I found the beginning area a rather strange experience that I came to appreciate only in hindsight of seeing where the game was going. You start off in a weird desert in the corner of the world, but it goes places.

LOVING it so far. Gameplay gets better 2-3 hours in. I'm on chapter 2 atm playing 5-7 hours or so. Just writing shortly after finishing the first real story dungeon. Think Tidus meets Yuna dungeon but vastly different. The bros are awesome so far, so much better than the shitshow excuse of a cast from FFXIII. Story emphasis isn't quite as strong and unlike every major FF,
it doesn't start in a major bang like they all do
. I feel like that those are the only two issues but when the story hits so far, I'm digging it.

One thing a few hours in
I better see the full cinematic of what happened to his dad. I think they really should have showed what happened there.

The idea of playing FF songs during the car ride is GENIUS. Brilliant. I enjoy the long rides instead of fast travel partly from this season. Such a nudge to FF fans. This is one of the most awesome side things in any FF period. So fucking brilliant.

Also the immortal dude is gonna turn out to be a bad guy, ain't he? Getting a low key impression he's called immortal is he takes powers from Kings or whatever. He has lived this long because he helps bring them to power and then sucks their power?! and keeps staying alive forever. That's my plot twist theory from knowing fuck all about the story.

So yeah 2:36AM and I'm still gaming. Don't remember a day or month this last happened with me. It's good to have Final Fantasy back :)

EDIT: How do I add magic? I used fire by equipping it once but no longer can with Noctis. I have all 3 elements maxed but can't add them on my set... :\

A hearty "fuck you" to whoever designed the Daurell Cavern Super Dungeon. It's worse than some of the later Super Dungeons.

It took me roughly an hour and a half to two hours to clear and it was nightmarishly annoying on almost all fronts. I remember someone complaining about the Sir Tonberries. Well there's at least three in there. Then there's enemies literally invincible to physical attacks. That's right. So you have to rely on the halfassed magic system to beat them. I ran out of spells in the first room (there's at least ten if not more wave/rooms of them). So I had to rely on Ignis and the Ring of Lucii to get me through. Don't forget the crabs that pretty much OHK your party(which mine are 87).

Not to mention multiple sub-bosses who are like superbosses elsewhere in the game. The final boss being that stupid snake that turns your team into toads was the icing on the shitcake.

After about 40 hours I'm pretty burnt out. I'll try and push through the main scenario but everything is the same. Every fight is the same, I could probably beat every battle asleep because the same strategy works on every enemy in the game. There's also just no challenge, this must be the easiest AAA I game think of for a long time.

I like a challenge in Final Fantasy, I like executing strategy to overcome battles. Trying to beat something like FFX using the same strategy each time would be impossible. When people says there's 'depth' to the combat, I'm sorry but I don't see it. Genuinely I can beat every enemy the same way, how you you call that a 'depth' and it's not challenging to do everything the same way either, I get A/A+ on everything every time. Carry enough items and you're invincible anyway and you have to because the useless AI dies over and over every battle. The warp point restoring full MP instantly is so overpowered. The most interesting battles are the few without warp points.

I don't know, I wish I just rushed the main story I guess but then the main story is terrible so maybe not. It's not an awful game but there are always elements dragging it down which is frustrating. Hopefully the next Final Fantasy has a bit of depth and challenge to it. For me, as it is, this doesn't really feel like Final Fantasy at all. It's fine as a light action game but I miss skills. I miss having to use buffs and debuffs, I miss magic and strategy and having to adapt to different battles.

I'll push through and I'm sure next time I'll be able to focus on the more enjoyable parts but when I loaded it up today I just wasn't motivated to continue because I know the game has really just been repeating itself since the beginning in terms of combat encounters and non-dungeon exploration.

Don't tell me there is no camp in that Dungeon? We could potentially eat meals to buff out party for stuff like the Toad immunity.

That's the movie "Kingsglaive" you want, you can rent it from streaming services. The movie is about that exact event.

In the menu I think it's called "Elemancy", you select a slot, add magic to it, choose the "Craft" button, and then equip it to an action slot.

The more I think about it, the less I like the story up to ch6 (I stopped just before; can't play till Friday).

It's really not just that it's sparse. It's also kind of bad.

Okay, so how do you heal in battle or use items? I've been playing for 20 hours and gave tried everything. I read online that you press R2, but that only brings up the other character's attacks.

Unrelated to the quoted post but somewhat related to TheLamp's posts, actually I never thought about how silly it was that their car broke down not even that far from Insomnia lmao. Poor thing must've already been on its last legs (and wasn't supposed expert driver Ignis driving at the time? Hmm...).

Weren't the areas around Insomnia Lucis territories before Niflheim took them over though? It doesn't make that much sense as to why Insomnia had its own money system but everything around it used other forms of currency (aka Gil). Although it's kinda funny that they created Insomnia as the big city and everyone around it are ole country hicks lmao

Ignis uses that as 'Analyze' skill in the game.

This is another peeve of mine. He doesn't always use it (it should be programmed for him to use it the beginning of every battle) and if you're facing 10 of the same enemy, it only works on one and if that one dies, no others show the weaknesses. Now it's not a huge deal since there are visual indicators, but still, I don't get why targeting a scanned enemy shows its weaknesses every battle afterward. But oh well, again it's not a huge deal due to visual indicators.

Crazy shit just started happening left and right. I love and hate the combat. Less enemies is great. Being strong is great. Large enemy groups and corridors suck.

It's hardly a town in size, to say nothing of interactive elements.

Chapter 9 spoiler:
Same for Alitssa

Are you guys ever satisfied ?

Would like to remind you guys that "towns" back in the PS1 days were little more than a couple of background images(nice art design though) that you pass through with little to no interactivity.

Lestallum is great.I love how each vendor offers different foods, items & hunts.

Thats interacivity enough.

this game just hands out levels. i'm lvl 35 and haven't done the first main mission in chapter 3 yet. i've just been doing side quests and monster hunts and have been levelling up like crazy

Can you use Libra in active time combat ?

Not without wait mode, it's random otherwise which is annoying. However Ignis has a skill where he'll buff you with whatever the enemy is weak too making all your attacks super effective. So this is the easiest way to find out the weaknesss because it doesn't seem to matter if he actually used Libra yet or not. I highly recommend this skill over regroup by the way. The bros are too dumb to stay alive no matter what and having all your attacks being super effective does more damage then they are able to even if they stay alive.

Bladenic

Not that it matters since
he's a complete non-presence in the game,
but anyone else miss that cool design of Regis from the 2013 trailer? Actually, wasn't that design changed to an older guy before being redesigned again for Kingsglaive? That 2013 design was awesome because it looked like a badass Mafia leader, not a stereotypical "old wise dad king" design.

Yeah I really don't know what they expected tbh. Probably a town where every building can be explored and just for the sake of it, because I really ask what's the purpose of having every building accessible if inside is just a repeating pattern of same assets and randomly placed elements. What counts to me is the atmosphere and Lestallum is absolutely magnificient!

Damn I really like the combat but it seems nigh impossible to block properly in large groups of enemies without permanently holding down the friggin' square button.

Warp out in larger groups until the group is smaller. You can always just warp strike over and over if you don't want to get hit

Edit: The Ignis skill is 'Enhancement' by the way. It'll buff you with what the enemy is weak to acting like a sort of light Libra and making you attacks do extra damage. I high,y recommend it

Jrpg, the topic.

I'm amazed how bad the camera is during battles and how they allowed that into the final game. The number of times it has moved behind a tree or a bush or something and I literally can't see anything is infuriating. How did that not come up in testing, it woudn't even be a difficult thing to fix.
That's the movie "Kingsglaive" you want, you can rent it from streaming services. The movie is about that exact event.
Well that explains why that scene looked like a movie trailer. (I've avoided every bit of information about this game after the first Versus-XIII screenshots so I'm not aware of anything that isn't presented in the game).

I love how Lestallum is seamlessly situated in the world and the drive up to there was quite stunning.

Lestallum, the disc and surrounding areas is a stunning piece kf game geography I think.

Yes there are but they're few inbetween. What's kinda evil about this is that no other enemy in the dungeon had the toad debuff so there was no way for you to know what was coming.

There are ways to counter some of the debuffs so that's not a huge deal but it was the perfect[/] way to end that annoying shithole of a dungeon.

The invincible goo monsters were infintetly more annoying.
Is there any worthwhile reward or are these just for people who want the challenge?

The best weapons in the game are in these dungeons. Not the Legendary Weapon quests but rather just laying around in these dungeons. Some are really good against daemons on top of high attack stats.
