Hey guys, just bought the game and looking forward to starting it. Before that though, I would like to deep dive into the lore a bit. I understand there's a movie that takes place before the events, is that right? Is there anything else besides the film? Cheers.

Friendly fire spells...ugh
Having to create spells over and over...ugh
Needing to siphon the rocks for spells...ugh
Cool down on spells...ugh

This ain't final fantasy that I remember. Still kinda fun though.

Yea I pretty much gave up on Magic after chapter 1. I hear it's easy to pump out 9999 damage with it eventually, but I hate the aiming mechanic and would rather keep the King weapons in those slots for the passives.

Battle system is still tons of fun, even if you ignore magic entirely. Still seems like a lot of effort if you want to do a true "mage build".

Anyone have an extremely hard time dodging attacks from killer and brutal bees? I couldn't stop being hit by them while on a hunt, (and then the confusion effects were happening in addition) and I've been doing pretty well with the combat system except for those enemies. I beat them, but boy was it a struggle!

That is the literal exact opposite of my experience with this game and FF games in general. In past FF's magic was useful, fun and exciting. In FFXV I mostly hold circle until the fight is over.

I haven't had a lot of magic stored up, since I kind of stopped exploring around Chapter 4, because I was getting over leveled. So to me magic has been a super scarce resource that I save up for big fights and make super potent. I then have to make sure I don't murder my team at the same time. I actually like how it is done.

My take on your problems:

Magic is for the first time usefull in FF games. In 97% of fights in earlier FF games you never used magic, it's just full on attack, here it is wonderfully made with effects that looks amazing, it's how powerful you want it. And therefor you can make magic take down monster way higher than you, and if you like the challenge of the fight, you make less powerful magic.

The open world is the best open world I have ever seen. The sights and dungeon are amazing there are tons of stuff to do and getting from place to place with fast travel takes no time.

Hunts will automatically turn the day to night if needed.

Summons finally feels like they should. Massive and spectacular when they first decides to help you. Since magic can be over used, it cool that the summons are more random. But they have helped me when I needed it most.

I'm only at chapter 9, so can't comment on the rest of the story yet.

add the best fighting system in an RPG (I almost like it as much as Bayonetta and DMC) and for me this is just an incredible game and if you don't like it all I can say is you wrong and git good.

Wait what. I take you never played FF10?

How do you make ignis use his equipped spells?

Make sure to watch the Brotherhood anime. I think it's more crucial to character motivations than Kingsglaive. Plus Brotherhood is so much more well written too. Really well done. i'm glad I watched it before playing the game.

There's also a 5 part anime series called Brotherhood that details the background stories of the story members. It's free on YouTube.

Magic isn't useful in FF12, but it's pretty important and useful in all the other FF games. I beat XV last night and I can confirm that you really don't need magic to beat the game.

Wish you could set up simple rules for your teammates, like using potions when below 25% health, using elixirs when below 25% of true health. Would make some more fights fun if I wasn't constantly commanding my team to heal themselves. Chapter 13 boss fight I'm looking at you.

I really keep getting distracted by hunts and sidequests and get on with the game. 27 and a half hours in, my team are at level 48 and I still need to do The Sword in the Waterfall in Chapter 3. On the bright side, some of the fights are still presenting a degree of difficulty, although that might be because I'm missing out on such things as the Armiger, summons, and whatever else the game has to offer.

OKay, I'm watching a lets play of it right now, since I don't have the cash and mostly just care about the visuals/story, not hte gameplay, but I have to ask.

Did the game really open with "Stand by me" while the characters can't stfu while pushing the car? I'm not being sarcastic, I'm half expecting that the user added the song even if that doesn't make sense, but neither does this song's placement or even the choice to use this song at all. It's just pure wtf.

Spoilering just in case but
it made sense to me imo when I beat the game.

Agreed. The moment I realized how much upkeep spells require, I dropped them entirely. I haven't siphoned any magic in 20+ levels now. They somehow made a worse version of the ffviii draw system.

I had a long spree of quests worth 50k XP, and decided to treat myself by staying at the stupid expensive place on the pier. for the 2x xp bonus. Good times.

I've also been a bit annoyed at some of the Cid quests not being very clear on when I can actually go talk to him to deliver goods.

So I have to redo the entire chapter 4 tomb sequence because one part didn't trigger correctly. Why did they block saving and not give you an option to reload at the last checkpoint?

Chapter 5 spoilers
Am I supposed to care about this death? The dude had 2 seconds of screen time. And now we're going on a revenge trip to take out an imperial base when I just got done doing the same thing a few minutes ago?

I wish you could accept more than one hunt quest at a time, would make life so much easier...

Yeah, that's probably my biggest complaint with the game. There's still like 200 of them, there's no reason to stretch it out like that. Worked fine for FFXII.

Jesus. Some fights in this game.

I dig the combat mostly, but some encounters really suffer.
The entire deadeye behemoth fight was one such example. Aiming for the barrels, trying to dodge, hoping the behemoth stays near the barrel long enough that you can actually hit him with the explosion
. Ugh.

When does the story go off the rails? I'm in chapter 7 or 8 I think
(just did that dungeon with Areanea Highwind in my party)
. Do you ever really get to a 'no turning back' point?

Yeah, that make 0 sense
Even his character design is the same as some random NPC

Best part of chapter 13 is a characters motivation and plot is told by pieces of paper on the floor I mean seriously lol at that

Really don't see what people's problems are with chapter 13. Its a bit different gameplay wise is all. Expected a long gruelling slog, and instead found a decently engaging, clearly sectioned "dungeon" with varying gimmicks and lots of save points and bits of narrative.

Greatest thing ever? Hell no, but so not this nightmare of terrible design that some have claimed. Crazy hyperbole.

And as for the scraps of paper, how different is this from any of the Souls' games?

Magic would be more useful if it didn't incapacitate your party and make the battlefield a hellscape.

This is correct. Other than having Ignis use Regroup, and even then it's a toss up because half the time he's in a stupid position to begin with. The AI is really sub par when it comes to positioning. You really should be able to command placement, or they should introduce a Gambit system like in FFXII

I dunno if it's been asked (alot of pages to go through) but I've been getting what I think is a glitch.

Basically I can't sprint with my Chocobo...like...ever...it's always greyed out even when I have a full stamina bar. I dunno if I did something wrong (do I need to feed my chocobo? If so how?)

1. Cast best spell with quintcast.
2. Who cares if everyone dies, you just did 49995 damage.
3. Hold dodge until cooldown is up.
4. Repeat 1-3 until boss is dead.

You can use it once
you level them up more by just riding them often.I think you get it at level 2.

I was worried about this going in, but I don't understand how unless I'm missing something. If I just hold attack, enemies will usually beat the shit out of me quite quickly without dodging and warping around. Some trash mobs sure, but anything remotely near my level requires further strategy. I'm not saying it's a deep system, but IMO it's more involved than simply holding a button. Just my experience at least, i could very well be doing it wrong

You need to be galloping to Sprint. (Hold R2 with Control Scheme B, probably the same for the others as well)

I like how because one game, with entirely different gameplay and vehicle for narrative is somehow an excuse in other games when they aren't comparable in the slightest.

You might even have a point if FF15 didn't botch the story on every level by having most of it happen off screen or unexplained.

Re: Chapter 13's general structure.

And yeah, turning the fantasy rpg into a shitty, shitty, shitty survival horror stealth game with the same repeated "scares" is awful. You might just have a higher tolerance for shit than other people.
