I was worried about this going in, but I don't understand how unless I'm missing something. If I just hold attack, enemies will usually beat the shit out of me quite quickly without dodging and warping around. Some trash mobs sure, but anything remotely near my level requires further strategy. I'm not saying it's a deep system, but IMO it's more involved than simply holding a button. Just my experience at least, i could very well be doing it wrong

It's because just holding circle makes it easier to bitch about the combat. At least that's the only way it makes any sense to me, lol. At this point in the game, I'm in and out and up and down and all around, dodging, attacking and warping like a boss and it's fun as hell. It just isn't something that's immediately easy to do, it's easier to just do it wrong and complain that it's the game's fault.

AI uses magic randomly. Gladdy usually just uses them up asap while Ignis is pretty conservative. It's so random. Wish you can tell them when to use it. Seems like an oversight to not be able to tell them how often to use them.

Is there a way of fast forwarding time to night?

Only way I know of is to accept a hunt that is only available at night and it gives you the option to wait there until night. Otherwise, I believe you can only sleep until morning unless the story requires you to wake up at night.

My take on your problems:

Magic is for the first time usefull in FF games. In 97% of fights in earlier FF games you never used magic, it's just full on attack, here it is wonderfully made with effects that looks amazing, it's how powerful you want it. And therefor you can make magic take down monster way higher than you, and if you like the challenge of the fight, you make less powerful magic.

The open world is the best open world I have ever seen. The sights and dungeon are amazing there are tons of stuff to do and getting from place to place with fast travel takes no time.

Hunts will automatically turn the day to night if needed.

Summons finally feels like they should. Massive and spectacular when they first decides to help you. Since magic can be over used, it cool that the summons are more random. But they have helped me when I needed it most.

I'm only at chapter 9, so can't comment on the rest of the story yet.

add the best fighting system in an RPG (I almost like it as much as Bayonetta and DMC) and for me this is just an incredible game and if you don't like it all I can say is you wrong and git good.

I disagree with pretty much everything you said and I'm cool with your opinion, but that last paragraph is borderline insane to me. The "git gud" seals the deal.

Just a guess...
I believe you can only sprint if your "trotting" (RT2). Maybe that's it?

Nah I'm on a constant trot, since that's the fastest I can go without sprint

oh really? weird. Tried restarting the app?

I legit think it glitched out and its linked to my save because I've restarted the PS4 and everything :(

I mean its not a *huge* deal since I take my time exploring anyway but it is a little annoying

Crestholm channels drove me insane last night, especially with Noctis jumping over railings when I sprint.

I kept doing the same thing! Maddening to feel like you're making progress in that place only for Noct to flip over a rail and make you back track.

Man, you know you are addicted to the game when you can't stop thinking about it in work lol

Can't wait to get home ;-;

You and I are on the same boat. ;_;

4 hours left and then I go rush some chapters, I grinded exp all night yesterday.

Chap 8, lvl 42

The "best open world" opinion is where I was sick in my mouth a little, then reading the rest with the taste of bile on my tongue was fitting.

Seems like everyone is still using Gladio's first skill?

I use the second one (can't remember the name) because of the higher damage, although it's single target only. But maybe Tempest is better when leveled?

For Iggy the healing skill is a must, and I dunno what to do with Promt, he's almost useless in my group lol

Jesus. Some fights in this game.

I dig the combat mostly, but some encounters really suffer.
The entire deadeye behemoth fight was one such example. Aiming for the barrels, trying to dodge, hoping the behemoth stays near the barrel long enough that you can actually hit him with the explosion
. Ugh.

When does the story go off the rails? I'm in chapter 7 or 8 I think
(just did that dungeon with Areanea Highwind in my party)
. Do you ever really get to a 'no turning back' point?

The story goes off the rails from moment one, but where it really turns sour for most people is Chapter 9. If you still like it after that chapter then you'll enjoy it all the way through.

From chapter 9 onwards you are on a linear path to the end. However at rest points you can choose to be returned to the open world so it's not an issue at all.

I used Gladio's second skill throughout the game for burst damage, I alternated between Ignis's Regroup ability and Enhancement before settling on Enhancement, and Prompto I kept with Piercer, and basically just used it to burn one segment of tech bar when I needed invincibility frames right this moment to avoid some devastating attack.

I prefer Tempest since it usually helps me out when I'm being overwhelmed by numbers, personally. :p

For Prompto I use the skill that pulls all the enemies together. Then Ignis with Regroup, and then I blast the enemies with Magic.

Magic in this game is so freaking satisfying to use, and a true spectacle. :)

yea, bummer. i only use it if i wanna quickly get to a spot or avoid battles. hopefully it reverts back once you level up a Chocobo again. see if that happens.

Do people think this game is hard?

I wish there were higher difficulty levels. The early hunts were very fun since they were usually higher level than me and I had to pay attention to enemy tells, conserve MP, etc.

That hasn't been the case in the latter half since I've outleveled most of the stuff I have to fight. Outside of silly stuff like Coeurls just one-shotting me for no reason, lol.

Okay the gondola ride was cute like once now it's fucking annoying and takes too long WHY would they put the restaurant only accessible by this shit

Edit: AND ONE SECOND later I realize you can press triangle and skip straight to where you gotta go. Whew crisis averted

Was about to say, just skip it. You can skip almost everything by hitting triangle, or start then triangle.

saying "git gud" is just internet for "The combat is really fun if you take the time to learn it and practice.".

And he's not wrong. Most of the complaints about the combat that I have seen come from people not doing it "right". If you do it the way it was intended and get some practice in, by the time you're towards the later chapters, you'll be flying around like a goddamn ninja and it's really fun.

I agree with Tempest and Promto's gravity attack, especially since they go really well together.

But best Ignis move is Enhancement by a billion. Basically gives you 2x to 4x damage depending on the enemy and only takes 1 charge.

Well well! It seems I still have a lot to learn about this game. I will definitely try that!

that Gravity attack seems to be hit or miss for me. I dunno, I switched back to his original attack since it does a lot of damage and lowers defense.

No such luck sadly, I levelled twice since it started, guess all I can hope for is a patch that fixes it D:

Quick question about weapon upgrades in later game chapters:
I'm on chapter 10 now and have this option to time travel, or something, from a teleporting ghost lady, or something, back to the open world section of the game. Do I have to use that ability to upgrade my weapons from Cid from now on, or will I come across him again soon? I have quests to turn in for upgrades, but would rather avoid back tracking until post-game if possible. Feels too contrived to use the memory thingy.

Well, it's his opinion, so he can't be wrong. But to say this is the best combat system ever in a RPG would be considered a stretch by many. To say this is the best open world in any game would be considered ludicrous by... almost everyone who's ever played any other open world game.

Though I think he defeated his own argument when he said the open world is great because it's so easy to fast travel everywhere =P

No matter what you choose, you should probably have one one-tech-bar technique. That shit has saved me so many times. It's like a mini wait mode for people who don't play on wait mode.

Yes, you need to use that.

Damn.... did they have zero budget for cutscenes in the game ?

Or they improvised them at the last minute ?

Even main story missions have no real cutscenes, just people talking using awkward stock animations.

In an average AAA game you would expect these moments to have special camera work, animations etc.

There is nothing here.

Even FFXIV has more cutscenes and it's a MMO.

def no money for real cutscenes.

I'm desperately trying to upgrade my weapons through Cid but I just can't figure out how this works.
I have the items he requires (coeurl whiskers and a glass gemstone) and the quest log is telling me to give them to him but he just doesn't accept them and keeps repeating "Y'all brace yourselves for power". I've been doing hunts and sidequests for hours and his answer never changes. What am I missing?

The story kept changing most likely they didn't have time to creat cutscenes outside of a few key ones they mish mashed.

Well, opinions can totally be wrong, but I happen to agree with him all-around. This is by far the best Open World I've seen and by FAAAAAR the best combat I've seen in an Open World game. Possibly RPG, but certainly for a casual RPG.

You have to camp after doing a few hunts/quests (I think it's three) and he calls you to tell you the upgrade is finished. Annoying if you're trying to hoard exp

Chapter 5......level 47

and I haven;t even used a single xp spell or xp boost food

Tonight.....I plan on abusing the xp and food boost.....should hit around 80+ before going to bed. Then go full bore into the story and worry about sidequest activities after main story is done.

I make Prompto take pictures mid-battle for the invincibility frames and because it's hilarious to me to order him to take photos while Gladio and Iggy are busting their balls fighting huge monsters.

The party ai in this was garbage. On some occasions I would just let them die because they were more trouble to keep alive than just soloing whatever encounter with noct. Outside of Ignis' regroup the party was worthless outside of story beats. It is the real reason I was not excited for the change in gameplay for this iteration. Nobody has gotten party members right since they started over automating everything and giving you no options to customize their behavior. It is pretty sad that XII implemented far superior party battle behavior management by leaps and bounds on PS2 and even allowed you to directly control their actions. That level of customization feels like a fever dream in today's homogenization of gameplay systems to appeal to more people.

The game was far too easy even at appropriate level since it seemed balanced around your party being dumb as shit and fairly worthless outside of regroup spam. At least
Iris
healed your party. I have no idea what the hell prompto was doing half the time other than dying.
