It's not supposed to be pixel perfect precision like a character action game:

You need to embrace this automation as much as your mind might be telling you not to. Timing the switch between these states is the core of the combat.

This is pretty true. Getting the Blink defensive ability that lets you hit square just as you're about to get hit will probably solve a lot of those issues for people, since it helps me out quite a bit to sneak in extra attacks and stay healthy.

Surprisingly enough this combat system is about learning enemy patterns and dodging them in advance with very little tells. Once you know how an enemy fights it's way easier to take them down in the future. Like I took out level 44 hobgobs without being hit once because I already did a hunt with them and got my ass handed to me before I won. Since I knew their attack patterns the next time around I was able to predict and dodge accordingly. Different weapons also afford different methods of moving about the battlefield, like holding left/right with daggers has Noct take large strafes left and right while holding down attack, so you can find your opening or slip around behind for a blindside.

There's a surprising amount of nuance to the battle system I find. The story though...

I have to sleep to avoid level 30 enemies...
I mean you don't HAVE to sleep. And you can just run out of their target rings to make them leave you alone. You can probably down those iron giants in the mid 20's also, they're not too terrible.

If anything the story is pretty fucking simple it strange seeing people are confused it just bare bones and doesn't add much that issue

I've had trouble finding new guns for Prompto, but you should have access to quite a few weapons by now (provided you've been doing side quests and exploring). The hunter HQ outpost sells quite a few holy weapons, and a few other weapon shops sell fire and ice weapons. I'm on Chapter 8 and currently using:

  • Noctis - Blood Sword (198 attack, heals 80 HP per hit)
  • Gladiolus - Hardedge (244 attack, easier to break body parts)
  • Ignis - Orichalcum (223 attack, holy element)
  • Prompto - Rebellion (167 attack, increase critical rate when HP is low)

Unfortunately I don't remember where I got most of these weapons, but I know I've found quite a few on the ground in dungeons.

That's way stronger than what I have. Where is this Hunter HQ?

Airdancing around a giant enemy while weaving in and out of attack and dodge stance to perfectly avoid attacks will never get old.

55 hours in and I still grin like an idiot every time.

This combat gives me a sense of flow that rhythm games and precision platformers give me.

Did a sewer dungeon for a Cindy quest yesterday that was awesome. The boss at the end too was the first challenging boss I've come across so far as well.

Regarding the combat complaints, it took me a while to get used to it. I thought the camera was a mess, the dodging was a mess, my timing was off and I just couldn't efficiently control fights.

Now? I feel in complete control over every encounter I'm in. I set the battle camera to far (though that's a bit annoying in areas with trees) which helps you see everything much easier and I've got the phasing and warping down. Knowing what attacks and weapons to use to help control the angles and where an enemy is facing is quite important too to support your team mates and breaking them/getting the link strikes in. Getting air dancing down and controlling the skies also ties in with getting the right approaches set up for the whole team. Utilizing techniques at the right time to give yourself an advantage (Ignis's Regroup is crucial for recovery) especially when tough enemies are using their most powerful attacks. Knowing when and what magic to use for crowd control (or sheer obliteration where the quintcast -ga spells are concerned) without hindering your team to get things started (I once used a stopcast spell and didn't realize it affected me and my bros as well :lol).

All the little basic and most common sense of things need to be combined in to one package to truly get the most out of the game's battles, especially the harder ones. It's absolutely crucial to learn how to get the dodging and directional attacks down (what direction you hold is actually important for certain moves) first and foremost. Holding the attack button down is also a big no-no imo. If you want to get quickly in the combination of phasing and attacking comfortably then holding L1 or tapping it back and forth with the attack button might give you a better flow and defensive/offensive balance that you can build upon. Not much can hit me now in terms of basic enemy attacks so it's possible to - forgive me - git gud and profit. Unfortunately I had to learn though rather than it being entirely accessible from the off.

To me the combat system in this is one of my favourites in the whole series. It's the main reason I'm not getting bored one bit after 50 hours of play.

But you still have very little control over your party.

That's what frustrates me.

Regroup is great to get people out of the way but it isn't spammable. You can still have them running off into a sitting Couerl straight after causing them to die.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
OMG

I would KILL for the lock on to be TOGGLE

I feel like it doesnt work half the time even when im holding the button

Targeting in this game is infuriating on top of an already shitty combat system

I assume everyone is using Wait mode?

You missed a tutorial pop-up. Click R3 while targeting to toggle lock.

That said, I don't disagree the combat has problems. By far the weakest in the franchise, just very shallow and automated. Too many elements are completely out of your control like hoping the AI will actually touch you to get out of low HP mode, or not being able to actively react to attacks because the camera and chaos on screen obscures fucking everything(no predictive flash for enemy attacks outside of parry opportunities?) Just amateur hour all around, but its frenetic and flashy and that seems to work well for the masses sadly. Even with a firm grasp on everything, I never feel any satisfaction from succeeding. Oh and Libra relegated to wait mode only? The wait bar being completely pointless and needless? What was the thought process there? Usually FF battle creative team does a thorough job ensuring every cog in the system has purpose and meaning, but FFXV is filled with questionable choices.

Not a fan of how sparse and lifeless the world is as well, lots of mundane tasks to accomplish that task you to explore every inch and region if you so desire, but to what end? Sidequest throughlines complete with no real conclusive justification for existing other than padding. There are no visual vignettes to stumble on ala Skyrim or WItcher, environmental details to piece together that helps elevate this barren landscape into feeling like a world that sustains its own culture, secrets, and stories separate from the journey at hand. Hell, you don't even loot from rucksacks or treasure chests, just shinies placed haphazardly and lazily on the ground depicting no reasoning behind their chosen location.

Every continual hour I play is really wearing me down, yet my curiosity remains strong as I try to retain optimism. Just getting harder and harder. How this tops people's FF rankings is beyond me.

it's random junk aka treasure you find. upgrading didn't help much. i just buy better weapons.

Ehh i dont really need that much more control over the AI

More control over Noctis is the basic building blocks for me right now

Clearly the combat has clicked for some of you. Im gonna take some of the pointers in the thread and see of i can find my rhythm

Is there any trick to getting Cactuars to show up? I managed to find one the first time I set out Northwest of Hammerhead as I'd seen in pics and videos a bit before night kicked in, but haven't been able to replicate it or hear that squeaking noise again signaling it's near.

I don't think you need much control over your party in this game. It's missing one feature, which would be a group-wide dodge that you can use for the big OHKO moves that takes up MP or something.

Upgrading actually makes huge leaps in the damage the weapon can output. The drain lance III does almost as much damage as the Hardedge, which is insane considering it attacks at like 2x the speed.

Chapter 5 is where the game really goes for it on throwing out a ton of proper nouns that seem important but have no explanation.

I think it depends on what level of storytelling you're happy with. Just having gone through Chapter 5:
people might wonder "Why am I collecting these summons?". One possible answer is "Because that's a fantasy game trope, so collecting summons is just something I should do." Some people seem to be happy with that. Other people want the game to provide an in-universe explanation for why Noctis et al. are doing what they're doing (which hasn't happened for me yet, currently on Ch. 6).

And I don't really know how anyone can be happy with that Ch. 4 -> Ch. 5 transition, other than by saying "If the game / characters don't care about what's going on in the plot, then I won't either." It's rare for a story to raise some interesting plot developments and then immediately try to ignore them in such a short span of time.

I just see the AI as support and a resource pool for special attacks

Its Getting Noctis and battles under my control thats proving the challenge

Ill play more and update my progress i suppose

I found this game amazing, despite the disappointing story, sounds like they intend to semi rectify this. Game of the generation for me if they streamline/fix some of the camera/lock on issues.

Got a lotta questions now.

I picked up the auto changer accessory in the sewer dungeon, but I accidentally sold it. Anyway to get another one?

What's the best equipment in the game and where/how do I get it?

Specifically is there a ribbon type accessory in the game to prevent status aliments? Trying to horde EXP but can't do that if I camp to eat for buffs.

Whats the quickest or easiest way to farm AP/EXP/Gil? The skills I want are really high AP and I've been broke in terms of money the entire game.

Anyway to return
to hammerhead in world of ruin? I didn't explore it at all, was Cindy or anyone else there?

There's one issue with the storytelling in the first half, which is that Noctis actually has two goals and the game doesn't make it clear enough which goals are spurring which actions. Noctis is collecting the Royal Arms so he can have the power to take on Niflheim and get the Crystal back, and collecting Summons so he and Luna can stop the Starscourge. The game just kinda sweeps it all under "Noctis needs to get stronger."

The story is simple but told poorly & in a confusing way. Too much happens off camera, too many new names are introduced suddenly around Chapter 5. A supposedly major character died, and I had literally no idea who he was.

My wife doesn't even play the game and understands the story as I play through it. Some people just don't have it to fill in the gaps.

At the same time if you don't pay attention you could miss a lot

To me, the story makes perfect sense so far, but is that only because I've already seen Kingsglaive, Brotherhood and read the prologue?

But why don't Cid tell me which materials he need and where to find them. :(

If you mean
Jared, he was not a major character.

Yeah, supposedly major character. He is in truth a minor character, but the reactions of the main cast made it seem like I was supposed to care about him or even know who he was. Like I said, poorly told.

He was never, ever painted as a major character, though. Yes. your characters mourned him, but it's not like an entire arc revolved around him.

I've been wondering that too and the answer is probably yes.
In one of the optional scenes with Prompto, he mentions how he and Noctis became friends but if you didn't watch Brotherhood you probably wouldn't understand where his self esteem issues come from at all.
I feel like Brotherhood should have been cutscenes in the game and not an anime since it was the strongest of all the outside material imo.

Well he does say in the quest description what item he needs, and you can generally assume if it comes from a monster or a random drop. I'll admit most of the time I've had the item and not known, but once you do have the item it's worth upgrading. At least in my experience thus far. The engine blade III and drain lance III have both been worth it. Can't speak for the auto crossbow or other mechanical items.

I love this answer.

Yeah I know about the details in the quest description but I have no idea how to actually get those items. I guess it'll just happen at some point.

Hahahaha, here we go again!

Why is it that people who don't enjoy the combat system feel the need to be so condescending torwards people who do?

I'm still on Chapter 3 and I can answer this:

Astrals are gods in Eos, and they're said to be slumbering, gathering power to fight the Starscourge. Luna goes around waking them up, and they lend you their power after you do whatever it is you must do for each of them. Noctis' personal interest is taking down the empire, and he needs both the strength of past kings and the gods in order to do so.

I may be saying something wrong, since, as I said, I'm on Chapter 3, but I already have an idea, it's not just a random fantasy trope.

EDIT: And I'm assuming both of these things will converge at some point, being a single game and all.

It's clear to me now that people on here want FF to be dead and they want XIII to be the fall guy.
It's clear to me that talking about ff on here will now be impossible no matter what. Going to add it to the list right with no man's sky,the last guardian, knack, uncharted 4, BioShock infinite and dragon age

I never expected this, but Final Fantasy XV is the game I've had the most fun with together with Overwatch of the 2016 releases. It's just amazing, and I have no idea why I am not getting bored by the repetitive side quests but I just enjoy it really.

Knack is a nice little gem if you got somebody to play with you.

I'm pretty solid on everything, I only have confusion on 2 things, both at the end of the game:

1.
What is Prompto, a daemon GM baby?

2.
Was Ardyn a King or an Oracle? He game makes him sound like the latter but then he has phantom swords and Armiger.
