Final Fantasy XVI New Trailer Released | Game is releasing on Summer 2023 to PlayStation 5

The game is playable from start to finish but they couldn't release a trailer that actually conveys what the story or characters will be like? Really deflates the hype.
Because they already stated that they plan on showing more? The game won't be released for an entire year from now.

Piecemeal updates have been the norm for mainline FF marketing since forever.

Really curious what engine this is running on. Some saying it's a hybrid of Luminous and the FF14 engine?

If it was UE, I think they'd have let it known by now.

Entirely different settings, characters, story, game play. That isn't unique?
After 16 games FF universe is freaking boring to me. I don't have to like it, I just think 10 games are enough and 16 is just too much. Not all games have major gameplay changes, especially among the first entries, let's say that the latter continues with its action combat on the same line as the previous one and the recent remake. So I'm not impressed at all

Help me out here because I havent been following it - but is there any rumors of this being a timed exclusive at all? To PC or others.
If not, this is 100% the best next gen system seller exclusive ive seen in a long time.
Really quite something - nice to see Japan get their shit together once again.

Im not a fan of the decision to go more DMC flippy ridiculous combo heavy - was hoping for more grounded Vagrant Story-like - but there is no denying its still awesome.

Even Sony's own video upload confirmed it's a timed exclusive. This is on the trailer from one year ago. Not available on other platforms for a limited time after release on PS5. That more or less confirms it's going to other consoles. I have a PS5, so whether or not I'm able to wait depends on what other games are releasing around the time this one is.

And they conveniently no longer seem to be calling it a console exclusive in latest videos.

I tell this to everyone that bashes the XV story also. It is not the same story when directly translated and neither is this one apparently. It makes much more sense. I have no idea why the translations are always so damn horrible. Shaking the island to its very foundation and it will be a battle between Eikons are two very different things. One has gameplay implications where as another is just a bad translation.

Why is Era trying to look for a PoC in the game, I mean tf.

As someone who wants to experience the story right the first time that does not speak moon, what are my options?

I really hope Koji doesn't take too many liberties, but the FF14 team has a bit of a habit.

Im not sure what to think of the kaiju looking battles between the different summons in the trailer i see health bars for each summon making it look like a fighting game.

I saw a few people bring up it might be ATB/turn-based when it goes to Dominant battles and I think I can see it. Unless they intend to keep it fully controllable in that state, too. It looks like the boss battles this time are extra cinematic in nature.

Remember, PoC is only applicable if your skin is very dark or your facial features are stereotypical of another ethnicity or race. All Asians must have incredibly slanted eyes. Anyone from the Middle East and South America must have enough melanin in their skin to be decidedly not white. If not, then those people are not <insert ethnicity or race here> enough. Because remember, stereotyping is bad until they need to stereotype something to manufacture outrage.

Sarcasm aside, this is a Japanese-made game with a medieval aesthetic set in a purely fictional world. If they decide that this world is largely racially homogenous with few deviations, then that is their choice. The lore and the story at hand are not suddenly improved because you slapped in some characters for the sake of diversity.

If it is the case it is a single character driven action combat with peppered RPG progression elements, then really should have looked at ADB. I find it to be a reasonable middle ground between menu selection/multi-character command juggling/ and common sense, commonplace if-then parameters. You can tell the team is more FF11/FF9/FF14 inspired than say FF10/FF13 direction (obvious reasons considering the history of the Dev Teams/CBUs).

As I've said before, one of the greatest challenges is streamlining how players will interface and control the game when it comes down to action heavy combat and mechanics. When these kind of systems are paired with party members and excessive on-screen menu elements, tactical aspects start to lose face and presence in exchange for reflexes and flash.

One thing SE does quite often is wait way down the line to unveil each game's specific battle system. We'll have to wait before we lose interest in how it fully controls with whatever "Active-X" battle system this might be. Could be some gimmicks or proprietary multi-party DMC system they have in the cut they're not ready to quite share.

It looks fantastic but I can't help feeling a little disappointed that all the combat seems to be solo. Having a party is a core element of Final Fantasy in my eyes.

absolutely 1000% hate every single aspect of this game revealed so far. it's like the worst of all final fantasy choices, art styles, story themes and direction thrown into one game. Im just completely turned off by this game in every way.

They wouldn't be able to cast indigenous people beyond the polar-circles (ie arctic) then, as they turn white as sheets in winter 😂

Well at least you didn't call them "eskimos". Since that seems to be the latest "racially insensitive" word. Even though the etymology of the word didn't stem from an insult at all. Then supposedly some unidentified member of the Cree people interpreted the word as having come from their own slur against Inuits. Which apparently wasn't accurate but somehow caught on. So now, we have to refer to Northern indigenous peoples as Inuits. Even though an Inuit is only one group of those people. Like saying all Europeans are German or all Asians are Chinese. But hey, those damn racist colonizers referred to native tribes of the frozen Northern areas as "eskimos" so surely it was an insult. This shit is fucking tiring.

Enjoyed the trailer. Combat is looking like a full course meal from what I could discern from it, however its more than could be said for XV's junk food. (Enjoyed it enough during the honeymoon but after enough hours it was only serviceable at best.) The summons was showcased extremely well for the trailer, it's final fantasy imo. Hope we get one more trailer showcasing the combat mechanics, inventory, quest, end-game details, etc before the final "story" trailer SE usually puts out right before release. It's looking like a solid action jrpg, but expected since we know the mainline is finally in good hands.

Could care less about having a "party", I just want the cast/story having progression and is good or coherently well told.

Thread is a bit disappointing. Was hoping the nostalgia bickering would end with XII, XIII, or surely by XV, ah well I guess its par for the course with this franchise...

Well... I did do pauses during the combat sections of the trailer. Has an assortment of skills and items. You can jump and/or go aerial, has "stance" (summon) switching, dodge offset and counters, and resource bars/management, all of which tells me its going to be combo/strategic heavy. We don't have every detail but so far looks good, checking all the essential boxes, coming from someone who enjoys the rpg-action genre.

XVI's translator is Kojifox, responsible for FFXIV which arguably has the best English translation in the series even moreso than XII. Its in good hands.

The information about it being a fight between Eikons is obviously gonna be given or understood in the context of the story up to that point. Just because the trailer snippet of that dialogue isn't 1:1 the same as the Japanese doesn't mean it'll be a bad translation fam.

sticking with your food analogy, would you consider combat to be the main course in a FF game?

Looks quite... amazing. Serious story and characters, gore, nice enough graphics, epic music etc.

I hope Square delivers this time.

Combat alone? Not necessarily, I consider the storytelling as the meat of the game, exploration/events/adventure are the veggies, and gameplay/combat to the dessert in all the FF games. That's my order of importance anyway. To clarify though I was only specifically talking about one pillar when making the not-so-great food analogy.

i think the disagreement between FF fans happens here. for me, number one is sense of adventure and exploration. the story is secondary, and combat is last.

Really amazing trailer, the fights between summons look really cool and the story seems to be really interesting and way darker than the usual Final Fantasy, there's even a "nude" scene lol.
Given their comments on the game being almost done and Forspoken releasing in October I expected a Q1 2023 release so summer 2023 is going to be a longer wait than I expected but the most important thing is that the game is great.

They've barely shown anything yet.

Seems like it'll be a big game with a big cast. 6 Kingdoms, so each one should have a city, towns, settlements and then you have all the varying environments that connect them.

If it's coming to Xbox simultaneously then Xbox would have uploaded the trailer as well!

They have a show on June 12. Perfect opportunity to announce it there and create shockwaves.

What would be the point of doing that when Square Enix would just state so themselves.
The trailer uploaded on their official channels would've indicated if were laughing simultaneously on both PS5 and Xbox series.
FFXVI is likely going to come to Xbox at a later period after the Sony deal has expired, not sure why you're so hung up on it though.

I hope you're just joking. It was announced as a PS5 exclusive for 6 months before they can even release a PC version and at least a year before they would even CONSIDER releasing it on another console. Here's a good point of reference, having fun with FFVIIR on XboX consoles yet?
