I think that for the replay I will go with Hard/Classic, and I will purchase the Golden DLC pack (or whatever it's called) as a backup money/grinding/weapon source if I'm having trouble (and I probably will!)

Amusing but pretty nit picky.

Yea he's really nit picky. Just reading the first few paragraphs all I can think is most stories would fall apart given the level of scrutiny he's applying. He's assuming that everyone thinks perfectly and will always make the perfect move in a given situation.

Has there ever been a FE game without an ass story and shit world building?

I'm enjoying this game... but not really for any of the main story or the world. Otherwise I wouldn't be grinding characters instead of progressing the story.

(finished chapter 13 at 15hrs, still at ch 13 at 45 hrs).

His main complaints that basically get repeated throughout seem to be that half of FE7's battles are basically random encounters just to make the plot move slower, with random bandits and assassins appearing out of nowhere, at convenient at times where the group can face/defeat them, and the other half is about strong story characters assigning missions to weaker ones for little reason initially.

FE7 has the distinction of being the only FE game that doesn't take place during a war, so they had to make up random reasons for battles in each chapter, rather than having a more natural explanation for an overall bigger conflict. He clearly didn't like that, but it's not a big problem to most people. I guess it can be exploited as a flaw though. On the other hand, FE7 ends up having a more personal narrative, which seems to connect well with many people.

Awakening seems to have a particularly weak world building, but I wouldn't describe the story of any FE as "fantastic".

Personally, the most interesting story bit I've seen in FE were the the Daein chapters in Radiant Dawn part 3, where the player was forced to do "evil" things in order to avoid a direct battle with Begnion, rather than just defeating every enemy like usual. But that segment is fairly short and gets completely thrown out after a few stages.

I think the story in the game is good so far... I like a lot of the characters and their interactions, and the story and conflicts do a good enough job at moving things along. I would agree that it doesn't do a good job at building and explaining the world they live in past the locations though.

"Yeah and I'm the queen of Valm" - the only reference to a continent spanning empire before they enter the main story

Ignoring story line compatibility, what would be the most sensible marriages in the game, from a stat/skill inheritance perspective? I'm being very protective of Donnel's seed due to constitution.

Damn these reinforcements on chapter 21. Long range mages you can't kill, that's lame. On top of that you have other units popping in too, naturally the turn right after I start moving off the stair squares...

Donnel's seed actually kind of sucks, since his cap modifiers are mostly -1, with the only good one being +3 luck.

Donnel's stats actually aren't that great, but he can reach his cap extremely quickly.

Go check out sereneforest for a breakdown of stuff if you must.

Radiant Dawn's main story takes a predictable and not universally-admired turn, but there's actually a lot to like about its world-building (even if it stands on the shoulders of PoR). You learn a ton about the histories of the different countries and some of their more significant historical figures. Despite removing unique support conversations, Radiant Dawn actually gave the player by far the most interesting information about the characters.

Genealogy of the Holy War had structurally the strongest story in the series. The script is pretty weak (at least assuming the fan translation is representative) and does a very poor job of communicating relevant information about the politics of Jugdral, and there are some cheesy plot devices (brainwashing, amnesia), but I think you'd be hard pressed to find a player who wasn't very invested in the drama of the game's conflict.

Thracia 776 is a more minor story, but I think it's solid on its own terms, and frankly the intro movie alone (recapitulating one of the more traumatic moments of Genealogy of the Holy War) is enough to get most players going.

Well I beat the game.

Cordelia, Sumia, and Cherche all died because of archers.

The final chapter only took two turns thankfully since Chrom critical Aether'd.

In response to comments about the story: yeah, the story in this game disappointed me a lot, and I loved the story in PoR/RD.

PoR/RD are still my fav FE games.

I really enjoyed this one, though, but I much prefer the gameplay systems of previous FEs.

CAN'T. STOOOOOP. PLAAAAYING.

Unlike the cakewalk Normal run, this one was beset with problems. Had lots of trouble in Chapter 6, died in Chapters 11 and 13, ran out of money twice while trying to buy/forge better tomes and had to restart against Grima at least ten times.

Also, I think the clock only shows the time at your last save point before Grima; since that fight took about four or so minutes (thanks unskippable animations!), it's more like 1:33.

Lunatic is most certainly going to require grinding DLC/Challenges to get max stats for both Chrom and Avatar, which will likely cause the time to go way up. Will shoot for two hours but I doubt that's going to happen.

I had to have a pegasus knight flight straight to her to get there in time. Not stopping for anything. I think what I did was pair Sumia with Chrom and switched to Chrom if archers were in range.

It's essentially down to luck on hard if you're not brave enough to take a Peg Knight into harm's way. ...

Thanks to both. I didn't even think of killing the archers. Thankfully, there's a path where she isn't threatened by them.

Damn it Anna, I just saved your life. Get in my party!

I don't know why I'm grinding for maximum stats/skills on my Normal/Classic play-through, since I really don't need it and carrying them over into Hard would likely be impossible [given the amount of Gold needed]...and yet, I cannot stop.

50 hours and I just completed Chapter 14. A few characters, namely my MU, already has max stats, and I just have Olivia left to get Galeforce until all of the [learn-able] females have the ability.

I'll never progress at this rate...

It gave interesting information about the main characters, but secondary ones like Edward and Leonardo end up almost as empty as some Shadow Dragon characters.

The main story is interesting, and different from usual games due to it being mostly a hopeless battle for survival, rather than an heroic campaign, but FE5 was a step back from FE4 as far as giving lines to the various characters go.

Wait, what? If theres a consistent praise I've heard about FE from its fans, story and characterization has always been the strong element.

Gaiden (Fire Emblem 2) doesnt have a direct sequel, and is only very loosely related to the first game in that they take place in the same world.

Gaiden technically does have four characters from the first game returning as playable units. It's also loosely related to Awakening's Valm campaign, with several location names and such, including "Valm" itself, referencing Gaiden. On the other hand, they did basically write out everything that made Gaiden's setting unique during those Valm chapters, like the Mila and Doma cults, without even giving any explanation for it, and made it just an extension of Ylisse.

Also, while they loosely tie some Awakening characters to the Marth games, there's no direct connection like that for anyone in relation to Gaiden. They even completely ignore the second Falchion that existed there in Gaiden.

If theres a consistent praise I've heard about FE from its fans, story and characterization has always been the strong element.

I think most of the praise is to the characterization in the games with supports, not the story itself. The only fanbase that really gives that much importance to the story is FE4's.

Yeah the main story in most FEs usually boils down to "some guy is a dick" "oh no dragons" or some combination of the two, but the characters and world building invest the player into it in substitution. Awakening is probably the first one that relies solely on its characters.

There's still a Mila tree and Mila shrine, so there's that.

To be fair, in a way you could say that some of Awakening's world building is Shadow Dragon/Gaiden/Mystery of the Emblem.

I still haven't had the chance to finish the game, so I'm not really the best to talk about this tbh >.>

There are some name (and even map design) references, and the Mila shrine is said to be in ruins, which suggests that the cult disappeared, but they don't really mention Mila or Doma at all directly in any dialogue, not even supports based on what I've seen so far. They seem to follow Naga now, just like Ylisse, but the change or order it must have gone through isn't addressed by Awakening at all.

It gave interesting information about the main characters, but secondary ones like Edward and Leonardo end up almost as empty as some Shadow Dragon characters.

Oh, I thought they got a decent amount of characterization from the "info" conversations. I won't argue that it was worlds beyond what FE11/12 did, but even restricting my praise to the main characters, I think Radiant Dawn did a good job of teasing (and eventually revealing) interesting information about those key characters.

I agree. I don't think reducing the role of secondary characters is fatal to an FE game's story, but it's certainly not a good thing for world-building, and I am in no way advocating the bland, cast-of-thousands approach of FE11/12.

Most of that amounts to references here and there though, nothing substantive. Compare Cherche naming her wyvern after the original redheaded dragonrider to all of Jill's crippling issues and how they feed back into the main narrative and the audience's perception of Daein, it's a sizable difference.

Wow, is there any paralogue as intense as 11? First time in the game that I've legitimately having to resort to good strategy in order to stay alive. That was pretty fun, as each turn left me wondering whether those Wyverns would take out my Fred or not. Luckily the RNG was on my side. (Normal/CLA btw).

While the complaints about the game's story aren't unfounded, it's hard to deny the character interaction and support conversations are great.

Can't decide which way to go for Maribelle. Mage, Pegasus Knight, War Cleric, or Valkyrie :(

I am so bad at this game. My game clock says 2 hours but my log says 6 hours.

Between Donnel's map, the random skirmish, and Chapter 5 story mission, I reset so many times :(

Chapter 21 keeps getting worse, so I think I'll resume tomorrow.

First attempt I got screwed by reinforcements appearing after the exact turn I got off the stairs. Second attempt was going smooth with Galeforce'd Severa demolishing everything, then I get smacked in the face with a ridiculous critical hit toward the end. Third attempt was straight up bad, the long range mages were battering me all over, none of my characters were getting crits at all (with killer weapons), and eventually an enemy gets in and activates astra and kills one of my units.

Is you playing Classic or Casual?

I like Casual, it lets me do strategies I do in other SRPGs I couldn't do on Classic. I like sacrificing units to accomplish wins.

Uhm, 12 has the Avatar supporting with every playable character in the game.

Of course Inigo and Virion don't have a support. I kind of wish I made Virion the father just to see him ironically scold Inigo for chasing women.

Starting my Hard/Classic run and having a great time. I mostly fumbled around the first few chapters of this game, and it's nice going back to it having a full understanding of its' mechanics. It's definitely refreshing after constantly bowling over my enemies with my absurdly godlike characters in my Normal playthrough, anyways. I'm thinking more about unit placement and strategy than I have in a long time playing this game.

Me too man, me too. When I beat Chapter 5, I ended up letting a character die,

Inigo/Virion was one of the more amusing supports just for that reason. It's like, he's your son, what did you expect!

Yeah, that really bothered me. Essentially, there was no mention of Valm at all until it was important to the main storyline. That was abrupt and terrible world building.
