First PlayStation 5 console hands-on reveals mysterious nut

As spotted by 4Gamer, and picked up on by The Verge, a curious metal nut or bolt can be seen when peering into the PS5's casing on the upper right. That report suggested the nut allows you to remove the PS5's contoured shell and access its innards - which may be where its expandable SSD slot is hiding. As of yet, Sony is still to show how and where this can be accessed.

Alright, I want to hear some theories about this nut. Is it tied to SSD expansion? Is it holding the whole device together? WHAT'S THE NUT FOR, JIM?

Edit: new theory!

It's not a nut, as how would you get a tool in there to turn it.

It looks like a switch/lock. Depress it, and then can slide off the panel.

Based on previous shots of the inside of the panel, depressing that switch, means the panel would slide off in the opposite direction (towards the bottom of the console), which can only happen if the PS5 is not in the tower position. You have to lay it on it's side.

Really amazing that this type of thing caught the attention of people.
Maybe this would not be a "News" if they showed

- Some of the UI
- A revamped PS Store?
- A proper AAA game running like Demons Souls
- Free look up on the console and not in a controlled environment
- How backward compatibility works
- Test of speed on different games
- Start Screen
- What "create" button is and how it works
- Explanation on expanding your SSD or how to attach a new one.

But Jim Ryan has everything under control

I think it's for the additional SSD, you slide down the white panel to reveal the SSD bay and that's where it's placed.

They do nothing and let the rumor and speculation mill do all the work for them. Its genius.

Agreed, pretty incredible how little we have seen considering it is out in 6 weeks. But on the other hand, every console they have made has been sold so why do they have to?

Consequence of runaway consoomerism, Sony and MS don't have to do anything to convince people these are systems worth spending money on.

Take your good sense elsewhere! We have nut to talk about!

A month away from release and still nothing.

Its a nut. Its a bolt. Its a big nothing.

Hey joe i sell you this brand new car but i cant show it to you. I need 10k for the preorder. The only info i can give you it has 4 wheels 2 pedals and the best part...a nut and a bolt. So please be excited thanks for the money.

It's got a lot more than one nut visible. Not sure why media ran with this.

O.O

I dont think a Playstation console has ever had nuts so explicitly obvious and definitely appear removable.

Definitely intrigued to know whether theres a reason to it, or this is just bad design?

Seems like a pain in the ass to get at. Doubt that is how you expand the storage.

- Some of the UI (what about the XSX UI?)
- A revamped PS Store? (what about the XSX Store?)
- A proper AAA game running like Demons Souls( .. we saw enoff DeS and Godfall at 4K60, what about the XSX ngen games?)
- Free look up on the console and not in a controlled environment (why? who cares ... afraid of fingerprints like on the XSX?)
- How backward compatibility works (totally agree, even though we have no clue how the XSX does it and which games get an HDR patch)
- Test of speed on different games (loading times? expect them short)
- Start Screen (ok, ahve we seen the XSX one?)
- What "create" button is and how it works (true, but what does the share button do on the XSX?)
- Explanation on expanding your SSD or how to attach a new one. (totally agree)

Godfall running at 4K60 is more taxing than Demon´s Souls at 4K30 or 1440p60. They played Godawful for 80min and the console remained silent (50º+ celsius). The loading times are stupidly short, so much they had to "add fake loading screens with tips" in Godfall!!

PS4 teardown november 2013
PS4 Pro teardown november 2016
PS5 teardown __________ 2020

If we are lucky we still have one event left from the two.

edit: this post seems to get alot of traffic. i should have phrased it differently, but the message is "both have shown jackshit!". Betty means no harm! I have many happy feelings.

Just remember not to play with that nut too much. You don't want all that secret sauce oozing out.

I doubt this is anything to worry about. Must be a slow news day.

Well it would still be news because nobody knows what it's for.

In regards to them showing all that. They could show it all in the last week. People like you are going to see it all anyways. The common pattern of most tech and entrainment nowadays is to consolidate marketing efforts very close to product release. Not spread tidbits over months. The average PlayStation consumer isn't polling every month for information. It all gets pushed on them, and they rather push hard close to the launch so that you don't miss or forget about it; and can actually try and get the product.

Um, the game discs go in the disc drive. Unless you get the digital edition. Then you have to download the games from psn. And they already showed 6 launch titles. No secrets

I hope it's that easy, and tool-less.

Brilliant engineering if this is how it works.

I like this theory so much I'm adding it to the OP.
