Florida Gov. Declares State Of Emergency Over Hurricane Irma (Up: clean-up begins)

So, what's the issue with drinking tap water that's been out a few days?

Someone said the chlorine in the water breaks down? Is it enough to make you sick?

My current strategy involves using tap filled water coolers for drinking and fill a bath up for backup/restroom use.

This is a good question and I was wondering the same thing :/.

Just got home from work, wow. This is starting to sound extremely scary. I have an aunt in cousin in Tampa, managed to get a flight out on Friday.

Hope everyone is taking the necessary precautions.

Well shit, I just talked to my dad and now apparently the plan might be for us to evacuate to Georgia on Thursday (I assume to our cabin up there). This definitely changes things. The cabin is near the Atlanta area. Obviously we would put the plywood on my house tomorrow night instead of Thursday morning.

His house is in Hialeah/Miami Lakes and I had assumed it would be a fortress - impact windows, giant accordion shutters that cover the entire patio area, generator, you name it.

Considered he remembers Andrew better than I do, I don't think he's taking any chances.

I fill up bottles with filtered water year around anyway, it has been perfectly fine to leave those sitting around (coupled with properly cleaning the bottles between use, of course).

Unless it's mandatory they're not going to leave. 😢

I feel ya. I tried all day to convince my sis to pack up her animals and family and stay with me but she won't leave because of her birds.

Get those numbers regardless because if the shit hits the fan you may not be able to get through to them. Also tell them to at least prep and pack a bag with essentials and meds to be ready. Just try to impress on them that if it goes bad they may be without power or AC for awhile and it's harder to get help after than before. Hope they stay safe.

You all need to post more than just pictures. Add context.
That's the "American model" track on its most recent run, and it's substantially farther to the right. Ignoring Florida almost entirely it heads for the Carolinas where it shows a possible category 5 landfall. It's just one model, but it's notable right now in that it moved a lot compared to others.

Before hand, sure. During a power outage most people won't be able to unless they have smaller propane cookers or a gas range.

I'm just trying to understand the motivation for running out to get bottled water when we currently have clean running water from the tap right now. Figured there must be something I'm missing.

Just ordered some water purification tablets off Amazon ... along with a USB battery charger, just in case. I'm sure we'll get some water shipments here in Tampa before the storm, but it can't hurt to have them.

It might also be good to consider purchasing a portable power bank, especially if you don't have a landline. When power goes out it can be quite difficult to find a place to charge a cellphone, and it might be the only means of communicating with family or the like.

Btw, I didn't know there were so many gaffers in the Orlando area.
Hi everybody!

Make sure y'all have provisions stocked up just in case.

Hello from Orlando!

I bought a bunch of water yesterday. What else should I nab? I should figure how to drain my in ground pool which I don't use. It's already near the top.

You'd be unshocked to hear that the damn socialist European model is far left, then!
Ok good whew we might be cle..... oh wait. There is another one behind Irma isn't there.

Fuck
Likely to hang out at sea. That's worth zero concern compared to Irma right now. Irma isn't just coming sooner, but this is a top-5 all-time strongest hurricane.

My parents live in Jupiter and everything the news is saying about this storm is scaring the shit out of me. Please be safe, Florida Gaf. I went through Wilma and Katrina and the aftermath of these storms brings out the worst in people. Never saw so many fights in my life, and people are already down to beat the shit out of each other during normal weather.

I remember those days, but it's also not true for every area. I can confirm, to the surprise of no one, that Coral Gables tap is a billion times better/safer/tastier/less "black" water than Liberty City. What a nightmare the day we moved in and I just grabbed a glass straight from the sink while moving into our new home..straight spit that shit out..

Hmm..that's nice..😓
