Arsenal face up to criticism from supporters after club poised to end transfer window in profit on player trading
Arsenal were facing criticism on Friday night from frustrated supporters as the club were poised to end another summer transfer window in profit on their player trading.

Although Lukas Podolski, Olivier Giroud and Santi Cazorla were all recruited well before the start of the season for a combined £35 million, there is significant disquiet that these additions were then followed up by the major sales of Van Persie and Alex Song for £39 million.
The departure of other peripheral squad players, including Nicklas Bendtner on loan to Juventus and Park Chu Young on loan to Celta Vigo on Friday, left Arsenal approximately £10 million in credit this summer.
Wenger acknowledged that he still had resources at his disposal but, despite a late inquiry for Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien, it appeared that he was not convinced on Friday by the available quality and value. It has prompted fears that Arsenal have not adequately replaced Van Persie and Song.
According to analysis from the Arsenal Supporters’ Trust, the club were on course to end the summer with around £50 million of transfer funds still available.
“Our own analysis shows the club have not used all of the resources available to them to strengthen the squad,” said an AST spokesman. “Many of our members are extremely frustrated as they believe no stone should be left unturned in trying to make Arsenal a better team.”

A recent AST survey did show, however, that Wenger retained the backing of 77 per cent of members as the right man to continue taking the club forward. “As ever in football the final judgment will be results on the pitch,” added the AST spokesman.
Wenger on Friday pointed to how he defied even lower expectations last season by guiding Arsenal to third – their 16th straight top-four finish under his management – when many fans feared a mid-table finish.
“We are paid to make the right decision, or what we think is right,” said Wenger. “Spending in itself is not a quality. Buying better than you have is a quality. Last year on the same day, we were predicted to finish 10th-15th and we finished third.”

£10 million profit this summer?

It's all very frustrating. Garcia for 16m, while pricey, is the type of player we should have panic bought. Same with Dempsey as a squad player. Mbiwe... don't tell me we're going to wait for his contract to expire. One thing I will give credit to Wenger for is not panic buying a so-called world class striker. The reason we haven't won a trophy in forever isn't because we haven't bought big name players, no matter what Piers will continue to rave about on Twitter.

Regardless, Cazorla is a huge huge buy. Was very worried WEnger wouldn't replace Cesc/Nasri this window.

Is there a web site to tracks clubs spending this window. Trying to figure out of 20M is good or not....

You can't really judge the success of a club in the transfer window just by measuring the amount of money they've spent.

If that were the case then Liverpool would have been been the most successful club coming out of last years transfer window.

It shouldn't be panic buying. We didn't lose any of our players anywhere near the last day of the transfer window so it shouldn't be necessary to panic buy. If Song was sold by choice we should have had a replacement lined up. I honestly can't get my head around it.

Happy with that window, in the end. Javi Garcia and Nastastic the highlights and important additions, while Sinclair and Maicon's are "wait and see"s. We've still the strongest squad in the league, so that's a positive.

True, but it does measure how relatively Lerner is willing to shell out.

just need Madrid + Dortmund to knock you out of the CL for City to get the final piece of the puzzle: new manager.

Who is even available though? Can't think of anyone bigger than Mancini.

Guardiola?

edit: and no way Mancini is a "big name" in my book. He's been in situations where it's basically impossible to fail (first Inter, then City), and he's still found a way to fail.

so... now that atletico destroyed chelsea, I don't think PL is that much better than La Liga if anything. Sometimes I wonder why people put PL so high.

Btw, Game of Thrones watchers, have you guys read the books?

Yep. Would probably enjoy the show much more if I hadn't. Season one was pretty good, season two was disappointing to say the very least.

I've just added Dire Straits to the list of bands I adore.

Was watching the West Wings season 2 finale and "Brothers in Arms" started playing as Bartlet was about to address the nation.

I got goosebumps.

There is hope still for Footy-GAF.

Two roads.

Making a reliable striker out of Bendtner will be Conte's biggest challenge so far, no doubt. We need a miracle. :/

Chelsea has had a crazily inconsistent team the last years time and really all teams got off days, does one match really make you think that? #6 of England beat #2 Spain and Germany last season in CL. Oh shit.

Yes, I don't think the result of one game can prove a league's standing next to another. We lost to the MLS All-Stars for instance.

For all the players QPR signed, they only spent about £15m in transfer fees.

Still think they're heading for the drop. Too many new faces, too much pressure on the club to stay in the league (because of the unsustainable wage bill), and Mark Hughes is just a shit manager to be honest.

A couple of dodgy results and I can see them panicking.

Think they'll stay up quite easily tbh.

For sure, a lot of new faces and pressure but still quality players who will get them the points they need.

And Hughes isn't that bad. He's had okay/good results everywhere he's managed. Not sure where the idea he's a crap manager has come from really.

Wasn't there an article last year that said a bunch of their new signings were on huge wages without relegation clauses? Nedum Onuha was on 90k a week, even if they went down. That club is a mess.
Holy moly. Well as long as the owners are willing to bank roll them I guess they are fine...
