Ghost of Tsushima |OT| - Summer blade cuts through, the PlayStation shall go on, this is its swan song

I think the side quest Whispers in the Woods is a great example of what this game does right. If you break it down to its basic mechanics, all you do is follow a few clues then kill a handful of enemies. Sounds so simple, right? But everything about the presentation elevates this basic framework into something really cool, memorable and immersive. The absolute mood that is set by these dark woods at night is a small masterwork of visual design and stylistic ambiance. The minimalist little story that goes along with it and the way Jin wraps it up at the end. The game does this kind of thing all the time, elevating a basic design with real artistry.

I don't get it either mate.

I'm one of those stubborn one's who prefers a waypoint marker but starting this game off i can see the developer's intentions here. In no way did the wind mechanic bother me at all.
It's a refreshing change that foxes and birds guide you to points of interest.

This game is too beautiful and atmospheric for it be ruined by guiders and markers all over the screen. I hope future games on next gen follow the examples of Ghost.
SP is to be commended for taking such a step. One of my biggest complaints about waypoints is they leave no room for ambiguity in exploration. "The quickest way from point A to B is a straight line" robs open-worlds of their fun and feeling of mystery. The wind is great in that it gently nudges you in the general direction, yet not explicitly, leaving it open to wandering off of the beaten path more. If you didn't know about the mechanic you wouldn't even know its purpose, and a mechanic that provides gameplay utility yet remains hidden (much less adds to the experience in making it more beautiful and atmospheric at the same time) until needed is pure genius.

Though as I said in a previous post, I think the foxes and birds should've been attached to learning melodies on the flute so you could call on them if you were searching for secrets. Their guidance sticks out to me as a bit too artificial, it reeks of the developer shoving their hand into the experience screaming "Here! Here! Check this out!" in a world that otherwise feels very organic in its exploration and world building.

I really broke Jin. Monty Python mode engage:

Looks like Jin didn't learn a damn thing from his uncle. Fighting with his hands in his pockets.

Yeah photomode is all sorts of amazing. The best photomode yet.

I could spend ages tweaking pics. What would be cool is if we could take the animated sequences and save them as a theme to your PS4.

I hope this comes in a future update.

Nah just kidding. Yeah the R2 is dumb especially that you need to use it to switch between lots of things. Should’ve been pressing the touch pad maybe?

pressing the touch pad goes into listening mode. They use every single button on the controller including dpad, swiping touch pad, pressing touch pad, etc. I’ve not had any issues using the R2 as a interact button.

What time is it?

It can get a little wonky when trying to pick up resources next to crawl spaces since R2 is used to interact with both.

Im only a few hours in but I am really enjoying it. I keep stopping to take in the scenery, the game at times is just so beautiful at times. Gameplay seems good so far even though im not a parry fan I can pull them off semi regularly which it's awesome for me. I like Jin too but read here needs more fleshing out overall.

LOL ^

Why is no one talking about the audio? I play with my SteelSeries Arctis 7's, switch the audio profile in the menu to 3D and MY GOD, that intro where Jin rides through the field when the title comes up 'Ghost Of Tsushima' is mindblowingly good.

The sound of this game is incredible. As another user before said, can't wait to see what this game looks (and sounds) like with a PS5 update :O

Damn. I cleared a shrine and my animation bug is gone.
Good.

I can't stop laughing at your clips and i'm currently at work.

I just did a shrine puzzle next to what sounded like Niagara Falls. Loud and immersive as hell. I love the sound in this as well. That thunder though!

I really liked the presentation in the Heavenly Sword quest. It uses japanese folklore to tell an interesting story and reward the player properly.

Can you control how far you roll? I’m not far into the game but I hate how when I’m fighting against some spear guys and roll so far away I can’t do a quick counter attack. Or maybe I need to press the counter attack faster?

I had the same issue and I just had to attack faster I believe.

I half-way agree. Even though the idea of a game without minimaps and constant markers is good, in practice it's not perfect, I do think most players will rush after the wind. In the end, I think the brain gets activated by the wind in the same way as the minimap. All of this is clearly inspired by Zelda, and I do still think Zelda enticed exploration better. The birds and foxes are likely a direct consequence of the developer's nothing that players would ride past or not find the optional stuff. At least it's a good direction that I hope other open-world games continue to develop, as the clean hud on the screen is really something.

You should be able to fish.... I see people fishing and all my gaming muscles tell me I should be able to too!
I don't know what I'd do with a fish once I catch it though! Maybe temporary buffs? (Cooking)

Don't roll, only do the basic side-step dodge, it's enough to get out of the way. The roll is only for situations where you are surrounded.

To the people who struggle or dislike the combat, what is the problem do you think?

I'm loving the combat, the bow is WAY WAY WAY too overpowered once you upgrade it and get the slow motion, but I think the combat overall is slick, fast, satisfying and responsive to play. I don't see the problem here. Apart from the A.I. being too dumb.

It's weird. If I'm not in combat roll is press circle twice but when I'm in combat it will roll pretty often even when I only press it once to dodge a red attack. Maybe it has to do with the enemy distance.

I'm really enjoying the combat.

My only problem thus far is that sometimes i feel like Jin is too OP, but maybe it's my fault for not playing on Hard.

That needs a fix, I don't think it's working as intended (at least the range of the roll needs shortening).

Game needs lock on. The enemies have it at least :messenger_winking_tongue: (which means similar sort of code is already written on it, just needs some tweaks + good camera work). If we can get it on a patch, as an option that would be swell (I'm begging here).

Nah, you're nervy and pressing it twice quickly or your game is glitched. I sidestep all the time. Deflect attack, sidestep attack, mmmm. So good.

Definitely change it to hard. Also, the tools can be too OP. I only use them to thin out a hoard, otherwise I stick to the stances and the game is satisfyingly challenging.

Edit: I also don't use the armors that give you dmg reduction or health. Way too tanky that way, especially since I've found a lot of springs.

There is no animation break to signal a double roll. The player literally rolls across a larger distance within one single roll (supposedly actived by a double tap). If the player has literally no feedback cue over whether he overpressed or not (only after a fact confoundment) there is something wrong in the design (just on that alone). Assuming it's "working" as intended.

Agreed. I wouldn’t enjoy the combat nearly as much if it didn’t have that satisfying crunch and impact. The sound here for the sword fighting is as well done as the guns were for TLoU II.

Rolling should only be used when you’re trying to gain distance, not countering. Sidestep otherwise, unless you are up against a brute who's attempting to sweep you.
Duel in the Drowning Marsh. Fucking fantastic.
So good. Duels are the shit in this and Act II has plenty (though mythic quest spoiler: they're tied to a side quest for armor--the six blades of Kojiro--which I discovered after already having defeated two Ronin).

One gripe I have with this and it’s not exclusive to GoT but has plagued many other open world games as well: time transitions between day/night and weather. It happens over a period of seconds and is so immersion breaking. I watched the moon literally fly through the sky as if it had been launched from a catapult until it reached the top and stopped. Don’t know why seemingly all open-worlds with dynamic day/night cycles get this continually wrong, it should take at least five minutes to gradually shift. Maybe it's memory intensive on the lighting which is why they try to speed it up?

This game has one of the best openings I have ever played. The transition from being in a dark forest into a field of white flowers with the music swelling is crazy good. The art direction for this game is really fantastic.

I like that this game forces me to really pay attention while playing it. Theres a lot of visual and audio queues to give hints during gameplay.

JORMBO

Darkness no more
Anyone know how long the game is with doing most of the side stuff. I've been playing a lot and don't feel like I've scratched much of the game yet and was curious.

I'm really enjoying it so far. It feels like Assassin Creed Japan. I like AC so it works for me. The graphics and overall vibe are perfect. I like how they used the wind too to keep the UI clean. Side quests are well written. The only things I haven't like so far is the camera can be wonky at times with no lock on and the large amount of fort takeovers. I hope next gen we can start doing something more creative with open world games other then littering them with 100 forts. The whole concept is really stale.

Same, it was perfect in the beginning, but the armour and weapons feels like they tripple damage and armour rating when you upgrade them. It should be like a 10% boost when you upgrade, not like 200%. And the bombs and kunai are like superpowers. The character progression is just too extreme on normal. Im running around hoping I run into a boss or armoured enemies. When I run into 6 double-sword dudes killing me Im like "ah, finally", cause i wanna test my reaction skills. The side step counter is so fucking sweet its like porn.
