Ghost of Tsushima - Review Thread

I've watched some reviews and I still don't feel it. None of the reviews even explain the gameplay loop. Just say open world.
But I did loved 2nd son

I’m excited with what they’re doing with the navigation, using the wind is a brilliant inclusion. Nothing that gives a direct indication of where to go but only a general suggestion to encourage wandering off the beaten path whilst keeping the player pointed towards the goal. This has been far too long needed in open worlds.

One thing I wish they would do also is have the map be integrated naturally as well (akin to Ellie’s map while exploring Seattle) that Jin would take out and sketch while exploring instead of having to go into a system menu.

It sounds similar to Infamous SS.

Clear Mongol outposts. Story quests. Side quests. Find shrines and landmarks. Compose Haiku's (like the spray paint thing). Typical open world gameplay loop.

Same here. Watching the Laymen gaming video and hearing them compare the combat to Souls favorably and I believe 1-2 of them said GOTY and possibly GOTG, makes me pretty hyped!

But that's pretty much every open world game? I guess if you don't mind that stuff, like me, it's fine.

Thing is with Open World games, they need a solid story, imo, to carry the copy/paste standard loop. I hope the story is good in this to warrant the exploration.

GOTY or GOTG? Were they drunk? Solid game for sure, but miles away from that.

GOTG they never said, they said it was one of the best experiences they had in a while and one of the best open world games they ever played but they never said or even hinted to GOTG.

GOTY however this is definitely a contender imo, it seems like a very strong open world title, with intuitive combat, immersive world design, a compelling enough narrative and a fresh take on some of the open world tropes.

A GOTY contender for sure, but it doesn't even have a 1% chance of winning the most awards this year. Not with Cyberpunk and TLOU2.

I mostly only care about what SkillUp thinks.
I care some also about AJS but he is usually later with his reviews due to his productions.

If SU or AJS recommends the game I will buy it on the spot, and so it seems I will do tomorrow.
I have blind and complete faith in these guys to tell me if a game is good or not.

I also listen to JS. But mostly to avoid shit. IF JS says a game is shit, it is guaranteed to be 100% shit and avoided.
These are all the reviewers I follow.
(I also like JS for his production values and callous humour. He is my man.)

I don't think they said it felt like it but they said they enjoyed it as much or more. When Thiccboi said this is about as good as combat can feel in a game, the Skillup guy kind of made a reaction in agreement. At around 15 min in they talk about it. From 15 min in to a little after 18 min in is a good listen if you want some combat talk hype. I'll see tonight if they were blowing it out of proportion. The part where skill up says if you slow down the combat, the hit detection between two weapons is like pixel perfect. They also spoke of how they just played Valhalla and it felt really janky in comparison.

I will try my luck later today one hour before the big media markt or Saturn stores close in my city. With a release like that they usually start to put all the merch and games up before the big launch day to safe some time. Can´t wait.

Mad max is underrated. It may be a bit empty but it's one of the most consistent gameworlds out there.
Mad max is great.

I enjoyed the shit ot of it.

I was more sad for the finale in that game than for tlou2, cum bucket better pg than the entire tlou2 cast combined, fight me.

One thing I haven’t heard any reviews talk about is if there is a Newgame+ mode. Anyone know?

I'm sure I read/heard that there wasn't a new game+ mode.

I can't remember exactly where I read/heard this because I've read and watched a lot of content but I remember thinking it was really strange that it didn't have this.

It's not really that hard.

You do some main story with setpieces, high value cutscenes etc.
Then you have sidemission with important secondary characters with high value cutscenes
Special mission with some stuff from japanese folklore that grants upgrades
Then you have small activities like free a camp, save some hostages etc. That grants upgrades with some cheap cutscenes
Then you have minigames like writing haiku or cut bamboo stuff or findins natural sauna that grants upgrades
You have exploration with animals and natural landmarl that guides you in special places with rewards
Some light platform sections ala uncharted\tomb raider when you arrive in some places to get upgrades
You can collect resources to improve the sword etc or to change the color of your armours and headbands etc.
Sometimes you have these 1vs1 duels against strong enemies
Side mission give to you new stances, new armours, new talismans etc.
You have varied skill threes where you spend ability points (granted by sidemissions)

It's similar to the last 2 ac but with less stats and weapons and more overall polish.

Days Gone is so criminally underated. I bought it at launch but got busy with work and had to put it on the backburner, but I'm playing through it now and I can't stop. Totally has me hooked.
For the love of god don't play the game at anything below hard, and even hard become a cakewalk after a couple of upgrades.

No, new stances are unlocked by fighting and killing enemies of certain types and learning the new stance eventually.
Sidemissions can unlock new techniques though.
I don't know the details of what does what, i was just writing down a panoramic of what you do in the game :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

The post game is great too. Don't forget to make sure you get all those hordes and finish the handful of missions available. There's a wonderful revelation.
