I'm late here, but John Drake on the Bombcast was pretty friggin' great.

Airport deaths, murder/porn in the woods, vehicular coitus...what more can a man ask for from a video game podcast?

I thought Yoshi's Story was alright, but the rumor about the Purple Yoshi nearly drove my brother and I crazy trying to get it.

Also, that game was friggin' hard as a kid.

I only watched the first hour of BB, but Brad took care of the Maneaters really easily. They were hardest boss in the game for me. When I tried to use melee I could not do nearly enough damage to kill the first one before the second one arrived, and I kept getting knocked off the bridge.

I think that fight is meant to be done a lot earlier then when he fought them.

Yeah I think so too. I know I did it way earlier. Brad basically did it second to last.

I don't think the second maneater is on a timer, it just comes once you knock off a certain percentage of the first ones.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!

Yea I was surprised to hear manhunters being listed so often as some of the toughest bosses. Like Brad, they ended up being one of the last bosses I faced, so I also breezed past them. Reading about the troubles they gave so many does make me curious to try them far earlier when I replay that game someday.

Absolutely. I also enjoy that the "No handholding, no positive reinforcement!" game says "Good job! Go straight ahead!" after you beat the first boss and straight ahead is the only way to go.

EDIT: Also supposedly Dark Souls has a ton of items that you have no idea how, when or where to use. And then in Anor Londo you get half your screen covered with "THIS ITEM YOU HAVE IS IMPORTANT NOW!"

EDIT2: Also there's "The game doesn't even explain how to play/the controls!" when it tells you everything about the controls.

There are a handful of spots in Dark Souls where the game tells you exactly what to do with a developer message, and those are almost always weirdly unnecessary (the "secret" door in the Catacombs which is the least hidden breakable wall in the game and likely pretty late in the playthrough) or so ridiculous that it would have been absurd to expect people to figure it out on their own (the invisible crystal caves walkways, "Let there be light" in the DLC). Oh, also, if you listen to the "Go straight ahead" message you actually miss out on two secrets. But without knowing you need to walk to the edge of the cliff, new players might spend an hour trying to figure out the trading nest.

I don't know if any of the crew read the thread, but if they do, some points on stuff they were debating/confused about:

Dark Souls 2 Early Game Boss/Area Spoilers:
The Pursuer isn't the intended second boss, I don't think. Nor even the third. Don't continue down one track indefinitely; beat the boss, then check other areas and come back later. Heide's area is "supposed" to follow the Old Giant, including both of the bosses there. You can even argue the Wharf should be finished first, as it leads to the Bastille, which Vinny is already done with before even touching Heide's apparently. No wonder the game felt easy to him after the Pursuer.

Also, adaptability solves all your issues. The game is supposed to feel slower in every way at lower level; raising adaptability high enough will actually make it faster.

Probably already heard all of this and/or figured it out, but I guess pointing it out again can't hurt.

EVERYTHING IS DARK SOULS!

Its nice to see the gang excited about a game all at the same time again.

It is really nice, when they are a passionate about a game their content just becomes better.
I also definitely wouldn't have predicted that the majority of them would be much more enamoured with Dark souls 2 than with Titanfall this time last year. Nice to see them try new things.

Yoshis story was great.

Abomination? Really? Come on Klepeck.

Fastest I ever returned a game, mere hours after purchasing. Coming off of Yoshi's Island, abomination is an apt description.

Yoshi DS wasn't really bad, just really forgettable. It was insanely brutal trying to collect everything in a level. Probably one of the most difficult games to 100% that Nintendo ever released.

I feel like the reason Vinny and Brad had so much fun with Dark Souls 1/Demon's Souls was because they knew in the back of their mind that they always had the chat/internet/Rorie/Ian to back them up. They knew that if they ever did get lost/stuck on a boss, that someone on the couch would bring it up from the chat or that they could look on twitter and find tips. I think having that crutch really gives you a lot of breathing room mentally. I'd very much like to see how they handle the roadblocks they'll face in DS2.

I wonder if Jeff will play it. I hope he at least attempts to. SO often he is out of the zeitgeist. Feels bad
They should do a video with him playing the first hour or so and have the others guide him through. At the very least it would be interesting to see Jeff articulate why he dislikes the game while playing.
I feel like there is a lot of potential for a series where one crew member hate a game and the other loves it and tries to convince them / change their mind. Those discussions are fun on the bombcast but I think it would be interesting to see a debate play out while playing the game in question.

vinny beat demon's souls a few years ago on his own though, so i don't think that's the case at all. at least not for vinny

But even in that case Vinny claimed on the Bombcast that he never really "got" it. That implied to me that he wasn't exactly having the time of his life.

Brad should play more classic FPS games for Breaking Brad. DooM was awesome, it would be cool if he played Rise of The Triad or something.

Brad's a natural at twitch FPS; he murdered in a TNT a couple times.

I used the Thief Ring and being situationally aware in my first (STR) playthru, it was WITH an INT build that I had problems this time. You can have times the first one will dick around changing up from flying to bullrushing constantly buying time for the other to show up, decreasing DPS time, and increasing the chance you go off the edge/have to realign yourself to avoid that. THERE is where the danger comes from.

I wonder if Jeff will play it. I hope he at least attempts to. SO often he is out of the zeitgeist. Feels bad

Jeff should be in on one and just heckle.
Or Vinny is right and Potato Marshall is Jeff.

It's also REALLY easy. I don't think it would make for a good breaking bad, and this is coming from someone who attempted to LP it. I had to speed up the footage of me sorting through menus on regular occation to condense 15-30 minutes into 20 seconds.

Hard Mode definitely isn't easy. The difficulty curve in that game is so weird. It's really, really, difficult in the first 5 or so hours, then it just gets easier and easier. I played that game as a solo assassin and was a god by the end of it.

It also doesn't help that 2 of the 3 starting classes don't get any sort of evasion maneuver.

I can pretty much guarantee you he wont play it. And for good reason. He didn't like Dark Souls, so there is absolutely 0% chance he would like Dark Souls II.

Even if he would play it, he would probably criticise the game and then a bunch of people would take that way too serious and complain a lot about it.

I popped over to GS to watch a bit of The Lobby after reading Jeff was on, and oy those production values. I dig the set and lighting. Kind of a bummer how clearly split the funds seem to be with Jeff and the others seemingly having to fight for new hires, let alone having the resources for a better set.

(Not that there's anything particularly wrong with the current set, just a pretty stark contrast between the two...and I miss the fake brick wall)

I recall him saying he'll give it a shot like he did the first game, so who knows.

Huh... Just started watching it now; I always thought Starforge was that 2D Terraria-in-Space game!

Nope, Starforge is better known to Giant Bomb audiences as "What the hell is this game Vinny is playing, why isn't anybody talking, why is there royalty free music playing, and is generic brand Halo man ever going to build that tower high enough to get to space?"

Whatever you do don't go in that lighting downgrade thread.

I did. I just wanted to see the worst so I knew what I was getting into.

I was worried the lighting downgrade would greatly impact the overall atmosphere of the game, but fortunately from what I've seen and heard the damage is fairly limited, outside of some jarring texturework here and there.

8%... 9%...

EDIT: I'll be playing on my fat xbox 360 from 2007 and I'm praying I'll be able to finish it before my console implodes. It could fizzle out at any moment now. As if the Souls games weren't stressful enough...

I'm trying to think back to my time with the preview build I played in mid-Jan and I'm fairly certain none of the lighting changes stood out to me like that bloody skeletal dragon comparison screenshot everyone's throwing around. Of course, 60% of my experience was fucking groping around in the dark trying to light torches, so idk really.

I dunno if it's my shitty TV (actually nah, my TV is pretty good) but I still need torches to light some areas.

Even at the brightest I can't see the dragon. :(

Yeah I'm having a ton of fun with it, just knowing what could have been kind of sucks.

I hope their next feature is Vinny playing through all the Castlevania games. If not that, i'm not opposed to Dragon's Dogma, though i think it would be a lot slower paced than something like Demon's Souls, and potentially less interesting as a result.

I hope their next feature is Jeff 100%-ing the original Yoshi's Island.

Am I a terrible person because now I want nothing more from Giant Bomb than for Jeff to be forced to sit through critically acclaimed games he hates/dislikes for one reason or another? Yoshi's Island, recent Zelda console games, Red Dead Redemption, anything with zombies in it. This could be the best feature.

Forcing anyone to play RDR is both cruel and unusual punishment.

If that makes you terrible then I am too, I want him playing it and then whoever is around that likes that game the most sitting in on it. It would be beautiful.
