Giant Bombcast - 03/17/15

Was it this week or last week when Jeff said that The Last of Us wasn't very good? I'm surprised there wasn't a huge shitstorm.

This week. His opinion on the game is well established by now; I don't see why there'd be a shit storm when it's one contrarian opinion even among the Bombcast group.

Everybody knows he shits on everything. Its getting kind of tired, honestly. I don't feel like I can take his word for anything because everything just sounds awful. Look at the way he just ripped into Battlefield Hardline this week. He made that game sound like a 3 out of 10. Even the games he spends real time playing he says he hates. Take that shitty WWF card game thing he plays on his phone for example. It might be absolute garbage but because he keeps putting time into it I gotta wonder if the guy can even tell good games from bad ones anymore.

I can't remember the last time I heard him give a game glowing praise.

What? He likes a bunch of stuff.

I get the sense that this critique comes from a place of "he doesn't like the stuff I like"

Didn't he just this week talk at length about how much he's liking Cities: Skyline?

See, that's what I like about Jeff. He doesn't praise many games, so when he does, I'll make the effort to check it out.

Dan def seems a lot more engaged in the bombcast conversations. The discussion isnt as dominated by Brad and Jeff like it did months ago. I think hes getting the hang of speaking up instead of waiting on Brad to ask his opinion.

Drew is great because the other guys will play some stuff and talk about it and you're like, "man, I should check out that game" and then Drew is like "I went hiking/surfing/did some shit outside that wasn't playing videogames" and you're like, "man, Drew makes going outside sound pretty awesome!"

he hasn't done this nearly enough lately.

My girlfriend who's unfamiliar with giant bomb always refers to him as "that guy who hates everything" when she overhears me watching or listening to giant bomb content (which is a frequent occurrence)

All the Dan hate in here.
Dan is the best thing to happen to Giant Bomb in ages. I almost gave up on the bombcast when Vinny left, but Dan makes me glad I stuck with it.

Also anyone who thinks Dan is not playing a shtick should listen to Danswers. He's clearly a really smart guy who likes to joke around on the Bombcast.
People like different things. That's okay.

are you sure?
Yep.

I don't mind if people like Dan or not. People seem to take it personally if you don't happen to like him though.

Edit: I realize I'm being passive-aggressive at this point, where I'm not sure if I'm being trolled or becoming a troll, so I'm just going to pull a Jason and ignore Dan-related posts and postings altogether.

Yeah. He seemed really upbeat about the ff15 demo on the quick look too.

"Fuck all video games forever" - Jeff Gerstmann

But seriously, I remember one of the main criticisms against Jeff in his Gamespot days was how negative he was about a lot of games, especially on The Hotspot. His dislike for Resident Evil 4 around the time it came out started a bunch of forum threads, to give one example.

Well, he's probably most known for being fired for a negative review so. lol

People know that hes playing the heel, It can just get old though. Not saying I want him gone or anything since the heel can be a fun position to watch/listen to.

Didn't Jeff say he had fun playing Hardline well ripping it apart?

I think people over exaggerate how negative he comes off as, simply because he's down on so many big titles.

I remember people saying it sounded like he liked nothing in the GOTY podcasts, ignoring him gushing about Luftrausers.

Yo..... Luftrausers was THE SHIT!! :D

I don't get the impression Jeff hates everything at all. He just strikes me as someone whose been around the block a few times and doesn't have a lot of free time to fritter away.

yup, some might call him jaded but Jeff's seen it all so he knows what pubs/devs are up to.

I feel like i trust Jeff's opinion even though we would disagree about alot. He's got a love hate relationship with gaming that i strongly relate with and i feel comes with playing lots of games for many years. And hes very funny. I can listen to him all day.

Dan is a drag to listen to. He seems like a really hardworking guy and because of that he has my respect. But he's not very insightful or articulate on the show. And his full grown boy schtick is is not funny to me. All i can say is that im glad alot of people like him because i think he detracts from the show.

It sounded more like he was giving the game a backhanded complement.

"Well this game is amazing if what you were trying to do is make a terrible game".
He was saying that if the devs/writers were purposely making a shitty cop show parody, then they did a good job. But he thinks if they were actually trying to be serious, all they did was make a bad version of The Shield.

Well... he works for Sony now, so he gets to live half his dream at least. lol

Man, I want to listen to that 1up Yours now...

I remember this podcast. It was the Day Two E3 2008 episode, and Shane conceded that it was a smart business move...

But from then on he heard something that would "Swing the Pendulum, for good or ill, back to Sony's favor" with regards to FF or something like that...

And it turned out to be the FFXIII Trial that would be included with Advent Children Complete. XD

GOD DAMN I miss 1UP. Fun times.

I will echo the sentiment that Jason "Striker of A's" needs to stick around on the Bombcast. When Dan first joined, it was such a culture shock for the site in general with his outlook on life and his crazy stories. Drew is great to have with Dan on the podcast and video features like MGScanlon and whatnot, but Jason... "completes" him. He's the only guy I know of with Giant Bomb who worked with Dan before and knows how to balance out the eccentricity and hilarity. It's a Yin to Yang, Solid to Liquid, that kinda thing. Without the antagonism, of course.

Pre-emptive punches at a bar brawl aside.

Am I not up on my wrestling lingo?

I thought Gerstmann was clearly the "heel" of this podcast. I laughed this week when he said that FFX-2 and Majora's Mask were games that only "garbage people" would like. I can't think of any intentionally provocative or incendiary opinions that Dan has, though I guess I am not even half way through the new episode of Bombcast.

1up nuked all the podcasts... I really wish someone just uploaded them to archive.org or something.

As with the old Gamespot content, it's kind of sad that it can just disappear entirely like that.

Edit: someone put it up on Archive.org: https://ia601504.us.archive.org/24/items/1UPpodcasts2008/07:16:08.mp3

Man, Shane and Shawn. It's like a time warp.

He goes into it sometimes, but Dan seems more like he will say things like that, that he really does believe, in a more inflammatory way to get the reaction/attention. Something that I laughed at when Jason called him out on. Of course I've never really followed Dan before GB and have been use to Jeff for years so who knows if I'm just projecting or something.

Yeah, that whole part sounded more like he was joking around about how bad it was and that he didn't really believe that it was intentional. Once again, could be me just projecting though.

I also love that podcast because Shawn talks about the Plastic Instrument end-times and brings up a hypothetical Rock Band-branded plastic Winnebago with Blow-Up Dolls, and they also talk about the Rock Revolution live-demo where Konami staffers fail the song and the producer goes "Maybe someone else should have gotten up here to do it."

Plus Shane says "har-gow" when they talk about food they had wait isn't this thread about the Bombcast?

I think he wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. But as The Order and Call of Duty and everything else has shown, video game writers are almost always terrible at their jobs.

Man, Shane and Shawn. It's like a time warp.

Feels like just yesterday I was listening to new episodes of 1UP Yours and GFW Radio between classes and just day dreaming while listening. In reality it was like 8 years ago. Time flies, man. 1UP content got me through a lot of stuff back then. So much talent in one place.

He sees past the release hype a lot of people fall for and sees the game for what it actually is. If you go back and look at the games he gave a good score to back in the day, they are the ones that still hold up today. Just because he doesn't go batshit insane over the release of every game like a lot of people on GAF like to do, that doesn't mean he doesn't like anything. I don't really see how he "ripped into" Battlefield either. He was really level headed about the whole thing. I was honestly expecting worse after watching the QL.

Out of all game critics, Jeff is the one people should least worry about. There's tons of reviewers out there that get caught up in the release hype, give a game a high score, and then five months later they do a 180 because they actually see it for what it is. If Jeff gives a game a high score, you can be damn sure that he will give it the same score a year later. There is also a very high chance that it's a game that will hold up for a much longer time to come. That's what people should expect out of a reviewer. The least amount of bias.

Look at Roger Ebert. When he was alive, people constantly shat on him and said he didn't like any movies. Now critics look at the guy as a role model. You don't appreciate those types of critics until some time has passed.

Luftrausers, Advanced Warfare, The new Cities

1up and the Ryan/Jeff/Rich trifecta at Gamespot really was the highlight of games media for me. That was the short window where I would I loved to be a reviewer because it would have meant potentially hanging out in those offices.

It was nice to hear someone else who thinks Last of Us is super fucking generic and massively overrated.

You don't see that opinion a lot around here because people tend to get dog piled on fast for it. Pretty much exactly what happened to him when he said it.

I think a lot of people don't see it because GAF is the only forum they visit, but hype can quickly snowball on a discussion forum to the point where the vocal consensus is so far removed from the outside world. Just look at Driveclub. Someone visiting only this forum would think that it was some kind of hit due to it's very vocal fans. Outside of here.....not so much. Forums can really be echo chambers.

It's funny how him praising cities a lot gets completely ignored.

I'm also suprised that seing Hardline as completely by the numbers is controversial or "hating on the game". But eh.
The gameplay is still there and he likes it. I'm pretty sure he bought platinum for 4 but couldn't use it since 4 was a mess.

The game has issues especially with the story, but Visceral was very safe with this release so they don't get axed off by EA, there's still some goofy shit like the reload animations but that's hidden pretty well

It sold well, especially in Europe according to Eurogamer. I wouldn't be surprised if it outsold Forza Horizon 2.

If you just go by GB threads you would think Drive Club was an awful game that no one bought or played. Going solely by an English-speaking, American focussed forum is a good way to make yourself oblivious to the wider world.
