Im just keep imagining the potential battles in this game. Fenrir is going to be so sick. Then we got things like Garm, the gurad dog to the Castle in Hel (underworld).
This game is going to be so good.
I keep speculating who his kid is though. I could see him being either Tyr or Odin since they are the Norse gods of war. But that would mean no Thor and how do you have a GoW game based in Norse mythos with no Thor?
I know nothing about Norse mythology except from stuff that was in age of mythology. Hoping the creatures are cool. Can't wait for the big bad to be revealed
A pretty strong theory as to who the kid is. I don't have the time to actually do the research surrounding this, so I'm assuming what this guy says is based on actual fact. Given that, watch out if you don't want a potentially huge reveal spoiled.
Theory for how Kratos got into Norse realm in the first place: Odin (king of Norse gods) has him brought to Valhalla to be his warrior/slave.
Valhalla is a hall within Asgard (Norse version of Olympus) where great warriors that have died in battle are brought & train with each other to prepare for Ragnarok, the Norse great war/apocalypse. Warriors that go here are the best of the best, cherry picked by Odin, and given that Ragnarok predicts the rebirth of the world & death of many gods (including Odin himself), it's easy to see why he'd be interested in getting a godslayer like Kratos to fight for him.
At the end of GoW3,
Kratos kills himself, but since he destroyed Hades earlier in the game, there's no afterlife in the Greek religion for him to go to.
So it's possible that Norse religion stepped in to fill that void (similar to an alternate GoW3 story that David Jaffe & Cory Barlog originally had) and had Kratos brought there to become Odin's warrior slave, the same he was to Ares. Kratos probably won't be a big fan of that & will likely find some way to escape Valhalla. That'll put him in Asgard, where he'll be able to meet the other gods, including the goddess mentioned in that theory above with whom he'll eventually have a kid.
Also worth noting: all wounds a warrior has endured are healed once you're brought to Valhalla, which could explain

There are cretures that are very cool, like the Midgard Serpent, the fire demons and the frost giants, but there are also creatures which are not that cool, like the goats of Thor's chariot. The latter may not sound so cool, but it might be good in the final game.
On the big bad: personally, I would like Utgard-Loki (the leader of frost giants) to be the big bad of the first, Loki to be the big bad of the second and the third game, trying to have revenge his father's death in the second game and trying to take revenge on the gods who helped Kratos or his son, causing the Rangarok.

supposedly the game takes place in earth (Midgard?) during the time period where "norse gods walk the earth". so no idea yet where Asgard will play into this.

Since many warriors dream of going to Valhalla when they die (it is sometimes described as "warrior's paradise" for valiant soldiers) this could be the troll's way of saying that he will not die a glorious death, that he will go to Helheim, the place where all the "unimportant" dead people go.
Asgard is one of the nine worlds, so as long as Midgard (it means middle earth and it's the world where mortals live) exists, so does Asgard. I assume the world in the demo was Midgard, so Asgard should exist, too.
I just watched the gamersyde footage and holy shit, that game looks sooo good. It easily tops UC4. beste visuals I have ever seen, with so much details :-O
I hope Jorgmundr is like the frozen titan section in GoW2 where his body pesters you throughout the level, only here in the end it culminates in a hugeass boss fight. Then, when you defeat it the snake body disappears and opens up a path at the very beginning of the game. A little something to whet the appetite. End chapter 1
Game of the show for me. At first I wasn't sure, but this looks like a mix of GOD and last of us. The potential is amazing. Looking forward to more gameplay videos
For sure. Each swing at the troll looks like it has some power behind it. I also really love how each swing at his leg removes a chunk of flesh leaving big gashes in the leg. Nice touch.
It wasn't only on the legs. The axe leaves a mark wherever you throw at it and blood gushes from that location. Here on the troll's forehead and chest:
Speaking of boss fights, think they'll open the game with one again? Or will they defy tradition and open with a 20+ years later thing or something similar, and in a much more muted manner?

Very curious what the symbol on the troll's piece of rock is supposed to mean gameplay-wise.
Sure, he's a troll that uses fire abilities, but even then the symbol is too on the nose to not be some sort of gameplay mechanic. Maybe throwing the axe there will cause something to happen?

oh yeah Cory Barlog is responsible for directing the Colossus of Rhodes opening boss fight in GOW 2 and also directed the opening Poseidon fight in GOW 3....I think there is going to be an epic opening boss fight
Does anyone think that Kratos is well known...that the Norse Gods knowing what he did to the Olympians and knowing that he is living in their realm...that they go after him

Hmm? Is there any source as to him directing the opening boss of GoW3? He was out of the picture when they started designing that boss according to the making off featurette.

I think this time the Norse Gods are coming after him
He doesn't have the same connection as he did with the Olympians...so this time I think they know of Kratos and they are terrified that he is in their realm and want him and his son gone
I'm not sure which video it was--I think it was one from Easy Allies?--but one I watched said these are Draugr. The draugr are Norse Mythology's undead warriors. I'm curious as to why this one's fiery inside, though...

Germanic is just a broad umbrella term for the peoples of Western Europe at the time, as in Germanic tribes. There were a fair few. Angles, Saxons etc. Not directly associated with the country if that's what's confusing you.
It could also be that Freya seduced/brought Kratos to Valhalla which would be an interesting turn. As she also picked fallen warriors from the battlefield for her hall, maybe to sprite Odin?
Though to be fair the developers can play free and easy with the mythology I just hope they come up with something interesting.

It's just variations on a theme according to the people. Tends to include the same protaganists under different names and in different stories or context. Like Roman and Greek mythology is essentially the same Gods with the names changed.
Edit: Pretty much all linked anyway.
Zeus/Jupiter were both their respective leaders, and connected to lightning, for instance.
Norsemen refers to the group of people who spoke what is now called the Old Norse language between the 8th and 11th centuries. The language belongs to the North Germanic branch of the Indo-European languages, and is the earlier form of modern Scandinavian languages.
