This is a year when only critic picks matter more than usual, as it's between a AAA exclusive game and an indie game. An indie game has no shot at beating a AAA exclusive in fan votes.

Updated.

Meanwhile two titans absolutely dominated the market while these fringe titles vie for relavance.

Among Us and Warzone.

Your true GOAT candidates.

Do you also think Avengers Endgame is the best film ever made? Or that McDonald's is the best restaurant?

Do you think movies are games?

It's funny because the games on the GotY list follow formulas long established in the single player industry...like a McDonald's follows a formula.

Among Us and Warzone take genuine creative risks that advance the medium.

I believe only Warzone was launched this year.
It is a typical BT online play to fight the popularity of Fortnite, Freefire, etc.

Among Us is a 2018 or 2017 game.

Among Us and Warzone creative? More like copy/paste successful formulas.

Among Us is every a bad game in all points... it is barely a game... what people finds fun is to play the role-playing Detective while chatting with each other.

Do you think games are somehow different to every other medium in that the majority of the population are connoisseurs of the artform and sales/popularity actually do correlate with quality?

If not, why bring up sales in a GOTY thread?

Even if he wants to talk about sales... Among Us is basically low tier in terms of revenue sales.

$3.2 million

I mean... it is a very cheap game but even with the "new" popularity in 2020 it is still failing to generate money to devs.
It can be used more as a marketing tool if the dev is smart.

*Sensible chuckle*

So today's gaming media, and larger NeoGAF are "connoisseurs" now? The Kotakus, the Polygons, the Greg Miller's... connoisseurs? Really?

If everyone's a connoisseur, maybe no one is.

Games are unique though yes. It is the only medium that objectively improves at a rapid pace. The games in 2020 are objectively better than the games from 2000, which are objectively better than the games from 1980 (sorry boomers).

One could argue TV, and to a lesser extent film is improving as well, but not nearly at the rate of games. One could also argue there is no such thing as objectivity, but I'm not interested in entertaining that here.

The front runner on that GotY list plays like Syphon Filter 2 era stealth combined with forcing players to watch a lesser quality Walking Dead season. It's also a game with zero legs (sales dropped off immediately after launch) and sold largely based on Sony marketing dollars + pretty graphics. It's a game that has no idea what makes games special.

Connoisseurs, these people are not.

Gamers vote with their time. It's not revenue. It's not GotY awards from out of touch media. It's what gamers choose to play after a long days work. And they choose to play Among Us + Warzone. Not those fringe games listed above.

Did you miss the part where The Last of Us is sweeping the player choice awards?

And yes that'll be because the Warzone/Among us crowd (and by that I mean, people who just play those games) aren't voting. Because they don't care about this sort of thing. They're casuals, they just want something to play after work. So they go for what's cheap and provides immediate gratification even if low quality. They're the Transformers film/McDonalds audience of the gaming world.

Also I don't remember Syphon Filter having a survival horror gameplay loop. And Last of Us 2's biggest selling point was actually the storytelling of the first one (Which is why some people where so disappointed by it, because few can say it didn't deliver graphically)

What makes games special is their versatility to be many different things. From a virtual version of sports (Warzone), to a more visual version of a card/social game (Among Us) to a more interactive version of a movie/TV show (Last of Us)

Also Last of Us 2 sales were very front loaded, supposedly has one of the highest completion rates for a Playstation game, and regardless some games are obviously designed to be played for a longer period of times than others. Destiny is my most played game this gen, but I wouldn't say it was anywhere near the best, it just does a good job of dangling carrots.

Edit: out of curiosity, how do you feel about Animal Crossing?

I think these things are stupid, but I'm posting this one since I know that ehtomaz saw and didn't post for pure spite.

G1, Brazil's biggest and most important news site, posted their list: https://g1.globo.com/pop-arte/games...-us-part-2-hades-animal-crossing-e-mais.ghtml

1 - Animal Crossing: New Horizons
2 - Ghost of Tsushima
3 - Fall Guys: Ultimate knockout
4 - Hades
5 - The Last of Us Part 2
6 - Ori and the Will of the Wisps
7 - Doom Eternal
8 - Crusader Kings 3
9 - Final Fantasy VII Remake
10 - Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2

I am confused about how the highest game this year hasn't won a single award yet
Because its re-release of a game that came out back in 2017. as much as I enjoyed P5Royal I don't think it needs to win award. This true for Demons Souls on PS5, I LOVE the game but its 1:1 remake of the old game.

The reason FFVIIR qualifies because even if it has "remake" on the box that game is much more of secret sequel/spinoff more than "remake"

Not my list lol
It is based in the two sites in the OP... I have no power to change them.

Does anyone know why no websites acknowledge Dreams as a game that came out this year? or Factorio?
Both titles are very time-consuming to get to the good part and cater to a niche that isn't going to show up in GOTY awards.

Yep glad to see TLOU2 going to be the runaway winner in GOTY awards this year. Very curious how close it can get to the first one in terms of GOTY awards. Really depends on how many hand them out this year vs. 2013 and how many other games like Hades and such scoop up. Cyberpunk being the flop that it is really just handed most of the awards to TLOU2.

Percentage of awards matters more than total number which depends on how many outlets are handing them out in a given year.

Hades is a beast

Yup. To go against the most popular exclusive this generation and also TLOU 2 and to come out ahead in that many lists is quite an achievement. It's an utterly fantastic game, one I had a really hard time PAUSING while I was in the middle of a run because it was so addictive. Supergiant are gangsters.

I told myself the same but a part of me doesn't buy it. Dreams was a big deal, it may not have sold much but it got good reviews and plenty of discussion. That it's completely absent from any discussion makes no sense. I think the publications just assumes it's a 2019 game since it came out in early access then, but Hades came out in early access in 2018, so it doesn't fly.

Factorio has been around forever, at least 5-6 years, but that game was a management revelation that made an impact and inspired plenty of games. It's a big game to just become ignored completely across the board. But the truth is that most publications are console gamers, and odd little console games make plenty of lists, but amazing PC games with smaller audiences sometimes get completely ignored.

If the reviewer of a game gives it a high score, it doesn't mean much if he/she is the only way that wanted to play it. Usually, multiple people would need to advocate for it to show up on top 10 lists. I'll agree that there are more console-centric publications which sways things. Many PC indie games that don't meet the minimum number never even show up on Metacritic lists. Also, the awards don't end until late March. I can see Edge highlighting Dreams and PCGamer giving a nod to Factorio if CK3 doesn't overtake it.

PlayStation really is the best place to play. That's now 6 consensus GOTY winners for Sony exclusives (though Death Stranding came to PC the following year) over the last dozen years - and the only game not available on PlayStation systems during that time was BOTW. They always have the best first party + third party support.

Yep and even in the years where they don't have the consensus GOTY they usually have the runner up like 2017 with Horizon or a game win quite a few like Bloodborne in 2015. Some years they have multiple GOTY winners like this year with TLOU 2, Ghost, and Miles Morales, 2018 with God of War, Spider-Man, and Astro, or 2016 where they had Uncharted 4 and The Last Guardian.

One sided win-win by critic and public.

TLOU2 isn't done yet. Awards come in all the way through April. TLOU2 will still win many more.

Amazing year, overall.

Even with TLOU2 getting most of the awards, if any of the most the most nominated were to win, it would still be very fair.

It is a very tough choice between DOOM Eternal, Animal Crossing, TLOU2, GoT, FF7R, Hades and even sleeper hits like Immortals and Valhalla (can't forget about DeS and Miles Morales as well).

One of the best gaming years lately.
