The latest issue of PSM Spain has a new article on Grand Theft Auto IV with 20 new screenshots and the first details on GTA IV's multiplayer system. Here is a list of the new information, which is being updated constantly:

* There are 15 multiplayer game modes. PSM had an opportunity to try 7 of them.

* The game modes featured are as follows:

1. Hangmans NOOSE
2. Car Jack City
3. Bomb da Base
4. Bomb da Base II
5. Mafia Work
6. Team Mafia Work
7. Deathmatch
8. Team Deathmatch
9. Turf War
10. Cops N Crooks
11. Race
12. GTA Race

# In Race and GTA Race, the host gets to decide which vehicles are involved, and the number of laps to be played.

# In Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch, the host gets to decide the number of pedestrians, the amount of traffic, the intervention of police, and the type of weapons.

# The map used in multiplayer is the same map that is used for single player.

Jesus 15 MP modes this game will devour me now all we need to know is how many players they will allow.

I suspect that the 15th mode could be story Co-Op.

The host of the game makes the rules, in "Race" and GTA Race" he decides the vehicles and laps, in Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch he decides the number of peds, the flow of traffic, the intervention of police and the weapons. We tried a match, all of us armed with rocket launchers, half of city lighting up. (or somehting like that)

up to 16 people

on the screen with jacob it says you can customize characters for multiplayer. sex, hair, clothing...

_ You can drive a car or an helicopter with three friends

Mafia and Team Mafia work, you will play as one of Kenny Petrovics mafia henchmen, competing to complete hits ordered by the boss over your phone before your rivals. In "cops n crooks" A group of players will play as police, other as criminal, the police must make sure they don't escape alive, they can also see the criminals location ont heir GPS while criminals have no clue as where the police are.

Also in the single player mission "hangmans Noose" there will be co-op, the mission you and your friends will be able to escort a mafia man, while ambushed by the SWAT, but it doesn't end there, carjack, turfwar, bomb da base II, free mode, the 100 hours of single player are nothing compared to the 10 years of multiplayer.

After Burnout Paradise, I kinda wish there weren't MODES and instead was just the Free-Roam online and from that you could jump into different gameplay things like Racing and Deathmatch.

my translation of the cops and crooks tidbit

"The most fun mode, and the one that stole most of our time during our visit to the London offices. Half of the players are criminals, the other half are cops. It starts with a chase all throughout Liberty City, with 4 players in each car depending what side you're on."

*faints*

Believe it or not, I played the shit out of the multiplayer modes in the original top down GTA, over a dial up modem connection no less :lol Cannonball and Deathmatch, those were the days.

These new modes sound fucking incredible. I knew I was going to loose my life to the single player experience but holy shit, it's a whole other ball game now.

WHY IS IT STILL NOT APRIL YET?!

Multiplayer with lock on aiming is gonna be fun...ugh..

I was thinking it but didn't want to say it. :lol

I guess I was quietly hoping that lock-on would be disabled for multiplayer.

It's the reason I don't feel like I'm going to care about multiplayer in GTAIV.

Cops and Crooks Scenario 1:

After chasing a team for a long while you can't blow them up. You cut across another street, and just before they reach the goal, you hit them head on, sending the drivers of both cars through the windshield. What do the other 6 guys do now :lol I can see the infinite opportunities for fun in this mode.

Isn't there also free aim hmm?
There is when you just pull the trigger half-way; but, at the same time there's the lock on if you pull the trigger all the way down.

I'd like to see the lock-on part disabled for multiplayer.

Like Himuro said, there needs to be an option where you can flip the two. Meaning halfway gives you the lock, and full press gives you the free-aim.

hmmm. I like it. Good idea at first thought. But, think about it: When you first press the button it's going to immediately lock on to someone, possible pulling your focus away from what you really want to be aiming at. Then, when you enter free-aim mode you would have to make you own way back to aiming at your intended target. It would be a little wonky, don't you think? UNLESS, there was a delay. A very short delay (a half-second or so) in activation of the lock-on mode when you first pull the trigger. But, if you hold it mid-way for the proper amount of time it will activate. Understand?

That's the only solution I can think of.

Ever played Crackdown? Now imagine Crackdown + a cover system...

I haven't played Crackdown competitive multiplayer modes. Was that one of the DLC packs? I remember crackdown having a dedicated reticle for aiming though, always on the screen. And it would lock on when holding the left trigger - though in co-op, you couldn't lock on to the other human character.

Yep, pretty unwieldy. They should just not have lock on in multiplayer. That kind of ruins the competitiveness IMO.

Why not just make it like COD4?

A single-player mission called "Hangman's NOOSE" features co-op. You and your friends will be able to escort a mobster, while being pursused by a SWAT team.

Whaaa? They said before that co-op didn't jive with the single player focus of the series, but I guess some missions have co-op? This is so awesome! I hope there are other missions like this.

And 15 modes! Holy sh*t! And all the things the game host can change- sounds so awesome. I agree that "turn off lock-on" should be an option, though either way it will be awesome. I never played Crackdown- those multiplayer modes used lockon? Did it make it less fun / too crazy and easy to get killed?

And those screens in the magazine...:D

Oh, you mean the "sticky lock-on?" Yea, I wouldn't be too opposed to that (if we must have lock on). Though, since we're talking about GTA, it would probably be more like Warhawk; which would STILL be more preferable than the 100% lock on that we are familiar with from GTA's of the past. You know, the little circle or square targets that just immediately snap on to the target's head? Yea, none of that shit, please. Thank you. :lol

Speaking of Warhawk, the moment I first played it I said to myself, " An online multiplayer GTA must be something like this." :D

You weren't creative enough to create them yourself?;)

Have they ever mentioned how much they were focusing on multiplayer, or was it more of a secretive topic for them?

It honestly seems like too much between the single player and now this... I'm just imagining a completely bare multiplayer in terms of options - doesn't seem true that the game could have this much going for it.

Can't wait!

lol, no dude. If you'd read the entire post, you'd see the point of why I try to differentiate between co-op and competitive multiplayer, since the other guy said multiplayer has lock on, which in Co-op, you clearly didn't.

You need it on a darker background...better now, right?

edit: that didn't work so well. Damn you traveler! :D

Does the article mention whether Free Roam mode supports 16 players?

To be honest, the fact that they even include Free Roam mode is awesome. It's all I really wanted for multiplayer. Everything else is just gravy.

In car view confirmed.

And bullet holes and bodies stay in the world.

That's from OPM UK, also had a great screen shot that I've never seen before :)

I'm wondering what I'm going to do as far as multiplayer as well. I typically enjoy the story of the games so I don't want any spoilers, but at the same time I want to play multiplayer as well while talking to everyone.

Then in the early morning begin the Single Player story.
