Guess the GOTY awards

I will predict the two GOTY awards that actually mean anything:

AIAS - Uncharted 2

GDC - Modern Warfare 2

I'd have said the opposite but one developer getting GOTY from AIAS three times in a decade seems impossible.

... and shove Mountain Dew in our faces.

I really want to pull for Mountain Dew for their game of the year award, but I still think Axe Body Spray™ could pull an upset this year.

I don't understand why such a large percentage of GAF looks down on people that play MW2 and doesn't consider them real gamers. Are you so pathetic that you are a videogame elitist? I mean, I love Uncharted 2 so far but MW2 is a really great game. The multiplayer is probably the best multiplayer I have experienced on a console ever. Get over it.

Modern Warfare 2 has mainstream appeal, therefor, it is evil and must be banished.

I think most people that have played it can agree that the multiplayer is top-notch, but the single-player definitely left something to be desired.

Personally, Uncharted 2 deserves all the accolades but I think New Super Mario Bros Wii might nab a few awards.

Batman Arkham Asylum is the best 3D game I've played this year. Considering 2D games rarely win anything these days (unless they're on a handheld), I think that should at least get a nom someplace, if not a few wins here and there.

I think whatever wins will be some video game that, for at least its single player mode, does its bestest to try and be a movie.

I would be pretty surprised to see that.

I think those 'people' are more of a product of your imagination than anything else. We're not out to get you.

if MW2 on consoles is anything like MW1 sitting on my shelf i'm sure it's still aweomse

Uncharted 2 Modern Warfare 2 Uncharted 2 Modern Warfare 2 Uncharted 2 Modern Warfare 2 Uncharted 2 Modern Warfare 2 Uncharted 2 Modern Warfare 2 Uncharted 2 Modern Warfare 2 Uncharted 2 Modern Warfare 2 Uncharted 2 Modern Warfare 2Uncharted 2 Modern Warfare 2

For this year go ahead and change it to the "Uncharted 2 awards" Just don't say the "U2 awards" cause that would be weird.

Doubtful. Gaming journalists expect a lot more than just "fun" out of their games.

The multiplayer is just as good (arguably better) but single player is much, much worse. Lacks a lot of what made COD4 so great.

I suspect most gongs will go to Uncharted 2, but I'd also like to see Borderlands get a mention somewhere.

The handheld platforms would be the most interesting, it's been a decent year for those.

Borderlands is fun and all from what I've played, but no one should give a game that buggy and unpolished a game of the year award. Maybe a "partly finished game of the year" award, but nothing else.

Fallout 3 last year won GOTY and it was one of the most bug riddled game that year.

It's interesting, because some people have had a good time, others - like yourself - have happened across bug after bug. I suppose I'd suggest a "best new IP", but then you'd have the Torchlight brigade enter the fray - and for good reason, too.

I'm the loner over here rooting for Brutal Legend. While it might be flawed, it was one of the most unique games to come out this year.

In terms of Diablo style games entering the fray as a new IP, I'd 100% give the award to Borderlands over Torchlight. At least when Borderlands tries to copy the formula, it also does so in a setting that isn't always applied to the formula.

I didn't run into TOO many bugs (though a few did force me to restart a mission or two) it was just sort of the general way the game was built, and how some of the stuff felt really rudimentary or redundant or weird. Like, the game is about collecting loot, but I have no place to store loot. I have whatever my character can carry, and that's it... which also applies to medipacks and such as well... Whole game just had an air of "almost finished, but here it is anyways" when I played it.

Still really enjoyed the time I spent with it though, but I'll wait until sometime next year to pick it up on the cheap.

Dragon Age maybe? I'd even say that it has a chance of winning the GOTY nomination from Eurogamer or Giant Bomb.

I really doubt it'd win anything at Giant Bomb aside from maybe one of their joke awards, (which is kind of all of them) because the time they spent talking about it on the podcast this week was mostly them talking about how daunting the campaign is and how they doubt any of them will have beaten the game by year's end.

Yep.

I would like to give Batman AA a honourable mention though. It came from a pretty much unknown studio, based on a comic and blow the world away. Newcomer of the year easily goes to Batman Arkham Asylum.

I hope Ratchet gets it.

If Uncharted 1 didn't win, then 2 shouldn't win because 1 is more fun to play than 2.

GO GO Ratchet and Clank.

I really want Street Fighter 4 to win it, or ODST, but Ratchet is the pipe dream

I expect MW2 and UC2 to sweep the majority. Someone will pull a surprise somewhere.

And fair enough, too. Good points all around, especially the loot storage. The only caveat to loot storage in Borderlands is simply...the loot itself would become redundant rather quickly. Maybe it's just me, but I like the way you move through scavenged weapons, keeping the few good boomsticks and tossing the rest. Once you come across a better gun, the bottom of the pile gets left in the dust. I guess if the game had armor and more items, I'd want storage. The only thing I have issues with storing at the moment is the different shields. I want to have one for every occasion, but in all honesty, it's a minor gripe.

I forgot to mention Demon's Souls, that seems to have become a big hit here. Not sure how well critically it's done, but 98% of GAF can't be wrong on this one.

And Dragon Age, yeah...while not my cup of tea, it just might have enough clout to scoop up a bevy of awards.

What the GOTY for most sites will be: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2/Uncharted 2

What the GOTY should be: Little King's Story

My problem with Borderlands is I just have that frame of mind in RPGs where I want to keep EVERYTHING that is even remotely cool to me, even if it's many levels below what I currently have equipped. When I played World of Warcraft, my bank in that game was almost exclusively filled up with goofy trinkets and old sets of armor that were useless. :lol

Halo ODST has as much chance of winning as killzone 2 which is a shame. If only Killzone2 was fresh and not like released in march it would have a much fresher smell. Thus be on the short list of GOTY.

Also it's multiplayer and control setup was not that great. They fixed it to some extent and had a lot of cool features like how you could have playlists around a map to cut down on loading (something all multiplayer games should offer now) as well as its robust clan support.

I hate that buzz and newness are the determining factors for consideration. The only time when buzz and newness where shot down was when mgs4 won goty.

Gamespot gave their 2003 game of the year to Wind Waker, and that came out in march of that year.

IMO, KZ2 was just a great big beta for KZ3, which will skullfuck my imagination to shreds. Also, the only 3 GOTY awards that truly matter are AIAS, GDC, and GAF.

All of the US outlets will choose Modern Warfare 2, the European ones will pick Uncharted 2.

GAF will pick Uncharted 2.

AS much as I love modern warfare 2, i don't think that a game in which the online functionalities on the PS3 have not all been sorted out is worthy of a GOTY award.
