Guess the GOTY awards

Uncharted 2 is going to fall to GTA IV syndrome here fairly quickly. Good games, but zero staying power. I finished UC2 over the course of 3 evenings, and then sold it. It was fun while it lasted, but like the first game, there just wasn't much there. If these we were judging based on cinematic value that would be one thing, but as games? Batman was a far better action/adventure.
What do you mean by "but as games?" and ""there just wasn't much there"?

I don't think its fair to assume Uncharted 2 is going to be a short lived favorite, don't get me wrong I don't care if its not your GOTY (its not mine either) but I'm confused to what your reasoning for assuming it's not going to have any "staying power".

MW2 would be such a boring pick. It's good, really good, it's definitely more crack for the habit... But it feels like more of the same, and some parts of the content (Single Player, definitely) aren't as good as MW1.

That's totally your opinion. Uncharted 2 is the first game since Metroid Prime that I wanted to start playing over again right after finishing it. Even after my second playthrough..I am considering playing it again. This does not even count the online mode..which is a lot of fun.

I liked Batman, but once I got all the riddles, and finished the game I had no intention to play it ever again.

Sales have nothing to do with GOTY awards.
Not absolutely, but you better believe that the "titanic effect" is in operation, especially when it comes to choosing between two highly rated games. Do you make 30% or 80% of your readers/watchers happy?

GameTrailers: Highest Profile Shooter

IGN: Highest Selling Game

Giant Bomb: Overrated Game

Gamespot: Moneyhats

EDGE: Something Smug

Eurogamer: Fifa

1UP: 1UP is still around?

Spike VGA: Halo

This... is probably pretty accurate. Nicely done.

Sorry, why did Modern Warfare 1 (and Halo 3 for that matter) lose more or less unanimously to Mario Galaxy then?

Sad but true. I remember when games were supposed to be fun :(

Anyways, I think all the sites are going to pick Uncharted 2 or MW2. Probably skewed more towards Uncharted.

My wishes for game of the year: Street Fighter IV and New Super Mario Bros Wii.

Because people didn't have fun with UC2 or MW2/rollseyes

Hope Demon's Souls wins some awards.

It sold at a similar level?

Not that IGN ever looks at their scores when handing out GOTY awards (Fallout 3 won last year over MGS4 and GTA4 which both received perfect 10s), but I highly doubt Modern Warfare 2 wins GOTY. They are doing a "Top 25 Xbox 360 Games" list right now, and Modern Warfare 2 was #20. Borderlands was 13, Halo Wars was 12, and ODST was 11.

A GOTY from the first half of the year? Don't be ridiculous. Gaming sites have moved on.

And yet most sites picked Grand Theft Auto IV last year.

I was really hoping for at least one editorial GOTY to name my personal favorite game of the year.

- Original IP
- Innovative use of online functionality
- Massive replay value
- Real challenge, rewarding and refreshing
- Gorgeous art, music and visuals
- Deep character development and customization
- Phenomenal gameplay

Demons Souls.

I don't think MW2 is going to get the universal goty praise that people thought it would get. Sure it'll get it from the usual suspects (Gametrailers, GiantBomb because Jeff has so much influence) but other than that I'm not so sure.

They didn't do a great job on character development and customization was pretty limited compared to a lot of RPGs out there. I was a little annoyed when I realized end-game armor was basically limited to a choice of 4 different sets or if you picked a woman at the beginning, mixing and matching perhaps. The story is so thin its almost non-existent, but everything else in my book was phenomenal. Its definitely up there this year for me. I bought MW2 on launch day and Demon's Souls two days later and haven't picked up MW2 since I got Demon's Souls. Pretty addictive stuff.

MLB Show 09 and Forza Motorsport 3 are more deserving of GOTY than anything else. But no publication would have the balls to give those games that award.
PS: Sorry I ragged on you so hard Chespace.:lol

Uncharted 2 everywhere.
But Eurogamer and Spike VGA will be "fueled by Dew" to give their prizes to some 360 exclusive. Halo, I supouse.

And everyone must create the OMG Fighting Game of the Decade nomitation for SFIV.

If there was justice in the world then Rhythm Heaven all round, but chances are they all got stuck on Lockstep.

What is SO good about MW2? I mean, the singleplayer campaign isn't anything special, MW1 SP was much better ( except for infinite checkpoint spawning by enemies and grenade spam ).

The online is basically the same as MW1 with new perks and other additions. Not saying it's not great, but come on it's not like it's that great of a sequel.

It's a decent game in a well-worn, well-understood genre, except with superb production values and a gameplay style (linear, heavily-scripted) that's good at showing off those production values. That means it's very critic-friendly.

Uncharted 2 shares a lot with it, actually, and is just as critic-friendly.

True, but it's nothing new or special imo. I mean something like Batman just came out of the left field, it had stellar production values as well, and gameplay which was just awesome.

I haven't played Assassins Creed II yet, but I think my personal GOTY will go to Batman. Had such an amazing time with that game.

+1.

So good.

I actually think MW2's success at retail will stand against it. Like GTAIV it was no surprise that it was going to shift millions purely on the strength of its previous franchise entries.

Uncharted2 on the other hand is unlikely to shift as many copies as NDI's work deserves, because of the PS3's relative install-base.

So I think some reviewers might be swayed by the fact that NDI "deserve" some help in getting the extra attention and kudos.

Also *that* level in MW2's campaign might stand against them... I mean, I respect IW a lot but putting something that high-concept into a game which is more about the action than the storytelling could be considered a bit of a cheap-pop.

The big thing between the two is really how much do you value multiplayer versus singleplayer gaming.
