Wait WHAT ?

The high res screenshots are in .jpg format and saved in C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\Guild Wars 2\Screens (replace USERNAME with your computer’s account name). They are anywhere from 4-12 mb in size and come in 7680 x 4320 resolution.

Why was this removed ?

Why was this removed ?

Because half the time they didn't work.

Both the 3D and the High Res screenshot functions would either crash the client, take non-usable shots, or mess up the renderer after taking a shot so you had to restart the client. The high-res especially would rarely work if there was any transparency or water in the scene. They were dev tools and not much else. The 3D shot worked okayish, no different from playing the game in stereovision using the Nvidia 3D glasses, but it still doesn't work quite right, objects don't render at the right depth, etc. I would have liked it if they had kept working on both features to make them prime-time, but I guess they figured it wasn't worth it.

Can't you still add -bmp to launcher for high-res photos?

All that does is save the screenshots to bmp instead of jpg, so no compression - it doesn't let you take a high-res supersampled shot at native res while running at regular sampling.

Well i have no trouble taking screenshots at 4K resolution (3840 x 2160p) using driver downsampling so if that is the limit i am fine with it .

However 8K would utterly crush any and all aliasing that might be left in a shot.

What am I looking at here and why is it so awesome?

Lovely artstyle, wonderful animations, and this guy:

My new waifu.

But more seriously: it just looks cool, and I'm always up for more team-based stuff that tries to break the mold a little. Stuff like Smite, Awesomenauts, and Heroes of the Storm prove you can make compelling moba-style games without praying at the altar of DOTA or LOL, so I applaud anyone who tries to shake the genre up a bit.

Plus, you can't tell me this doesn't look awesome:

I can't wait to see some in-game match footage.

There's nothing cel-shaded about the artstyle (in my opinion, since it lacks both edge lining and crunched shading) ,but I know what you mean.

These days though, anything that isn't gritty realism gets called 'cel shaded', when cel shading was originally meant to recreate the solid outline, duo-tone shadowing of celluloid-based cartoons.

Sly Cooper and Jet Set Radio were cel shaded, but things like The Walking Dead and Mad World emulate a graphic novel style, so I wouldn't call them cel shaded. Borderlands just cribbed its "concept art style" as Gearbox calls it, from Codehunters.

Wind Waker went for a cel shade style, but decided to forgo the outlines. But the way they crunch the shadows into a single tone, is totally in line with cel shading, artistically. Wind Waker HD looks more like claymation to me since they changed how the lighting works, but it still looks great.

As for Gigantic, it's going for a CG cartoon style as I see it, more Dreamworks/Pixar than anything else. So while I'd call the art direction an "animated" style, I wouldn't call it cel shaded.

I swear these things are starting to blend together. I guess Gigantic and Battleborn are different things.

Watching back to back it's pretty clear, but with a few days in between I had to double check,

Nope fuck MOBAs.

Y'know, there was a time people said the same thing about MMOs. Just because there's a lot of copycatting and uninspired clones, doesn't mean the whole genre is drek. C'mon.

Or do you agree with people who say 'fuck pixel art indie platformers they're all the same retro-nostalgia wankery'.

I get if someone doesn't like playing a moba, that's fine. I don't like playing most RTS games or sports games, but I'm not exactly going to call for them to stop being made or look down at people who play them, or say 'fuck sports games'.

That's just stupid.

Besides, how could you deny people this intro.

EDIT: I don't play moba games much. I did some LoL with friends, it was fun. I poke my head into Dota2 now and then, but I'm not a fan. Awesomenauts was awesome for a while, but 3 on 3 is too limiting. Tried Dawngate and Infinite Crisis, but both are too bland, zero inspiration to either. Heroes of the Storm has that Blizzard charm and polish, so it's a lot of fun for a quick 20 minute casual romp, much how Hearthstone is a quick alternative to Magic.

I just think that, as players and fans of an MMO that is widely criticized for unfair reasons, we're the last people I'd expect to be overly judgemental with regards to genres or games we don't like. I'm not saying "don't have opinions", but "fuck this genre" isn't an opinion. It's a bad knee-jerk meme, one my friends would call me on if I ever resorted to such an unintelligent barb.

Is Gigantic a MOBA then?

The term 'moba' is used for anything these days that involves discrete classes fighting for an objective. If Team Fortress 2 was made today, and only included Bombing maps, it'd be called a moba.

Not much is known about Gigantic yet, other than:

  • It's team based, with characters that have unique abilities.
  • I'm presuming it's third person, like Smite.
  • The goal is for your team to escort your massive Giant to the enemy base, the Giant apparently has an A.I. and can do things.
  • The abilities for characters are physics based, though it's unclear what that really results in until we see gameplay.

Will it have lanes? Will it have minions that spawn and run along those lanes? We don't know.

That's why I'm not calling it a moba just yet (even though I don't know WHAT to call a moba these days), so I'm calling it moba-style or moba-inspired.

Class-based team vs teams with minions all comes from effing Future Cop: LAPD (1998) anyway, so perhaps we should just call all mobas "FutureCopAlikes".

Moba means 'multiplayer online battle arena". Which is pretty meaningless. I prefer "hero brawler" myself to describe things like Heroes of the Storm, while things like LoL and Dota I prefer to call, well, Dota or Dota-clones.

Gigantic doesn't call itself a moba, it calls itself a "team action game". So make of that what you will.

You can respond to my non-intelligent barb (as if it was directed to you, which it wasn't) all you want, I still don't like MOBAs.

  • They promote a culture around calling an un-educated and/or not pro gamer nasty insults
  • The games constantly shill and try to court the whales and/or fanboys to buy everything about it
  • They have characters which appeal to the lowest common denominators in multiple genres of types of people (male power fantasy, fantasy sexy woman, sexy muscled/bimbo-like anthropomorphic characters, edgy sadistic characters, unknown unspeakable horror characters, etc)
  • They try to push the agenda of e-sports which clouts all other gameplay except for that which can be casted
  • Typically un-inspired (though this is changing, slowly)
  • Court a much younger generation whose attention span cannot be measured in hours but minutes

There you have it.

Well that is ludicrous. If it is more like Team Fortress 2 than LoL I will definitely be playing it.

Those two things along with RTS-style controls are what made something a MOBA in my brain. Extending the definition (vague as the acronym already was) to any game that involves teams of different classes kind of seems like it only makes the term less useful. I don't really know anything about Smite or Heroes of the Storm but that tiny little snippet of gameplay they showed for this made it look like I could play it with a gamepad.

My first one. I'm gettin' old.

Now do the same list for MMOs, honestly, and then tell me why you play Guild Wars 2 with a straight face.

I feel you're being hypocritical, and cherry-picking facets that support your hypothesis, and not only that, you're damning an *entire genre* based on a few popular entries in that genre. That's like saying because Tera aims to appeal to paedophiles who like little girls, all MMOs are that.

C'mon. You know what you're doing.

Half the stuff on your list isn't even unique to mobas, or created by the genre, and half of those existed since the dawn of deathmatch in DOOM.

I get it if you're not a fan of competitive titles, like mobas, fps games, fighting games, etc, because of the "competitive" culture that grows in them. There's a reason I don't play in fighting game tournaments anymore, so I *get* that, I really do. But I can still enjoy playing Soul Calibur, in spite of the people online who only scream "faggot" into the mic when in a match.

All genres have games in which characters are made to appeal to the lowest common denominator. Do I need to post MMO shots?

Esports. I won't argue much there. But even ArenaNet tries to push esports with GW2, so...

Won't argue about uninspired, which is why I like seeing newcomers that try something interesting, even if it's often to their own detriment.

I get it. You don't like mobas. I'm not going to even try to say you should like them. But you can not like something without being antagonistic about it.

Those two things along with RTS-style controls are what made something a MOBA in my brain. The moba genre has long since moved past RTS controls. Smite plays like a third person action game, Awesomenauts launched on consoles first and plays like Contra with a gamepad. Heroes of the Storm could play with a gamepad, I agree, though some skills would be tricky to translate, kind of like AoE targets in GW2, but not impossible.

I get the feeling a lot of people haven't really been paying attention to what the moba genre has been doing, beyond the success of LoL and Dota 2. That's like looking at only Call of Duty, and thinking every single FPS game is Call of Duty.

It's because League of Legends didn't like being called a DotA clone.

Because FPS games are technically MOBAs too if you take the meaning from the acronym directly anyway.

silly because if a game has these qualities then I don't want anything to do with it, and ascribing them to any game that hasn't been released yet and especially one that apparently can't even be categorized as part of the genre yet is asinine. which of course is exactly what you did posting "Nope, fuck MOBAs" seemingly in response to the promo stuff about gigantic. it doesn't much look like any moba I have played or seen played but there is also very little information that could categorize it accurately. even enthusiast press kind of just uses the kit-provided label of "genre-bending" so far.

kos is prone to having poor and indefensible opinions but you should rethink, even if you maintain "fuck MOBAs" as a principle, why you uttered it in this case in the first place.

I quite like this guy's design. and his kitty.

hmm, then it really seems to me like it's not a genre. And I guess blizzard agrees in that they seem to be absolutely refusing to use the term to describe their own game, even though it looks way more like a "MOBA" to me than Awesomenauts or Smite. I don't I mean of the things on this list, do a majority have at least the same basic control scheme? I barely know any of them myself and i'm surprised to see how liberally this label is being applied. I mean I just don't know how useful it can be to group together games that play that absolutely differently.
I get the feeling a lot of people haven't really been paying attention to what the moba genre has been doing, beyond the success of LoL and Dota 2. That's like looking at only Call of Duty, and thinking every single FPS game is Call of Duty.
I admit I haven't played the MOBAs but from watching video, I think I'd argue that every competitive FPS game ever has more in common with Call of Duty than Awesomenauts has with Defense of the Ancients. I mean "first-person shooter" at least provides a functionally accurate description of what the experience of playing the game is like. I mean, genre isn't all about perspective and controls... I'm happy to call Sanctum and Orcs Must Die! "tower defense" games, but tower defense as a genre has clear elements that are simple to understand and define as parameters of the genre. "Multiplayer Online Battle Arena" could easily be applied to something like Call of Duty if-

Lol having to defend myself against a one off comment. You guys!

Hawk I was referring to the genre and not Gigantic; what prompted the comment was just a general feeling I've been having recently on the subject of MOBAs - they're quickly becoming the dominant genre of games on PC and as an MMO player with certain preferences (see below) I don't like it.

My "fuck MOBAs" comment is a side-set of a much bigger personal preference:

I don't enjoy playing an MMO-like game where I can't customize my character.

I've already tried to get into League (haven't tried DOTA2). I can't get past the disconnect I feel when playing a character that I can't customize to my liking, and that's my own personal fault that I'll have to live with.

MOBAs in general are prevalent with this; you "choose" a character much like in a fighting game (for some reason it is easier to deal with in a fighting game because the style of controls/play is much different). I'm so accustomed to creating my own character, that I often seek out games only based on the fact that you can make your own.

This is not a specific trait I entirely enjoy/admire, however. It has limited my choices in gaming recently, and I've been trying to fight the preference. It didn't used to be this way, and I suspect it came into its own when I started playing MMOs and I -could- customize my character.

I guess I don't get why you just said "Nope, fuck MOBAs" out of nowhere then, if it wasn't supposed to be in reference to Gigantic? I mean we're talking about a "genre" (see above for my newfound confusion on this subject) that I don't really like at all either, just seemed like you were condemning a game there is almost no information about to have all those crappy qualities you mentioned. But we've been off topic for a while now anyway, so sorry about that.

Thanks for showing how MOBAs have no real definition; I was getting confused. I understand conceptually the building/resource management of an RTS, but if you remove those, then what do you have? I should actually give one a try though; they're probably fun.

Regarding Gigantic, trailers with no actual game footage are one of my pet peeves.

Don't let them change you, Ash. Be yourself.
If Kos ever gave me this advice, I'd take a long look in the mirror.

Hawkian

The Cryptarch's Bane
I gotcha. Man, I didn't have a clue from the trailer or the website one-sheet that it was potentially or supposed to be a MOBA. I'm definitely out of touch with what the "genre" has become, but it looks like their devs (and Blizzard with its new whatever it is) are staying away from using the term, which suits my perceptions fine.

If it's a good game and I find it fun, I'll play it.

How is the lag stuff all going today?
