Who told you the controller setup doesn't work in Windows 8, Hawkian? You guys keep mentioning it, but I've downloaded it and tried it twice with no issues in 8.1 (the last time being just a few months ago).
I couldn't bring myself to give up mouse and keyboard.
I think the only thing I may have done was change the programs to compatibility mode with Windows XP and set them to run as administrator.

If there is someone who can't figure it out for Windows 8, I can try installing it again and see what their issue is.

I'm not sure I'll really be able to forgo KB&M but I am old & my hands and shoulders hurt so I will atleast try.

To those who want to see me in-game my super name is Arthois.9685, I have not chosen a server yet...

Are you positive that the mouse recentering script (AHK hook) functioned properly? Did it put the cursor back to a fixed position when you (for example) pressed the Back button?

Ah, that part might not have worked. I'm pretty sure I remember the mouse cursor staying wherever I left it.

I found out today that my brother has a Guild Wars 2 account that he doesn't use so I'm currently downloading the client and am planning to start playing once it's done. I played Guild Wars 1 back in the day, so I'm hoping to enjoy this game as much I enjoyed that. Any tips you guys would give a new player coming in blind?

- Don't Rush. Lots of people make the mistake of treating this like a Traditional MMO where everything from level 0 to the level cap is filler and it's all about the "end game." With this game, the entire game is end game, so enjoy it. Everything you need to be max level for will still be around when you get there.

- Hearts aren't going to be your main source of questing, they're just there to get you out into the map where the real meat and potatoes of Guild Wars 2, Dynamic Events, occur.

- Learn to Dodge. You'll use it every time you play so get used to that.

- Try all the professions. Each one plays quite differently, so if you start with one that isn't to your liking, try another and chances are one will 'click' with you. Don't worry that you need to roll a specific class to get a group, play what you find fun.

- Race is 99% cosmetic; there are a few racial abilities, but they aren't especially powerful so don't let that dictate what you want your character to look like. Note that the Norn and Charr are very large and due to run speed being normalized, their animations make them feel slightly slower.

- Join GAFGuild to get answers quickly. Just post your username (name.####) and we'll invite you straight away.

There's more tips in the second post of the OT, but those should cover you. They recently revamped the early game and its tooltips / rewards so it will actually teach you a lot of what you need to know.

This is music to my ears. I find the leveling up to be the real make-or-break of an MMO to me, as I'm usually not interested in end-game raiding.

My username is Montone.1748; I'd love an invite to the GAF guild!

Invite sent. In the guild panel (Default: "G"), you'll see the invite; just click "Gaming Age Force [GAF]" and then the Represent bottom at the bottom of the panel. /g is the shortcut for guild chat, and you can mouse over anyone's character name to see their user name (since a lot of us have alts that have names you may not recognize).

If you're all about the journey, this is the MMO for you. You almost level too fast, and given that there are so many zones you'll easily be max level before you finish or even visit them all.

I was in a dungeon where everyone had a cat mini. There were two Chauncys, two Zuzus, and an Orange Tabby. When we stacked, the minis would run and stack too, it was like a herd a cats. It was sooooo cute.

There is a giant wolf spirit I've never seen before in Wayfarer Foothills. It disappeared after a few minutes and didn't come back at any point while I was in the area, so I guess it's easy to miss.

Wanted to say thanks guys, have been combing through this thread picking out info and links for my return to gw2. I came back to my elementalist and was having a tough time due to my traits and running staff. Switched to d/f and everything just got better and more fun.

Missed this sorry! 4 episodes, then there was a break during which you joined us, and you unlocked 5 and 6.

This is a ludicrous value, one of the absolute best deals in the history of gaming. Is there a Gaming side thread for it?

Thanks, and yes your not far off with the last part. I picked it up in a similiar deal, what, a month or so ago. I've got my $20 worth easily already and I'm only just getting started

Speaking about the controller , the only downside i have found with it is that i cannot run around and type in the chat window at the same time .

I too have wondered about this. Its an extremely minor quibble, but is the only quirk in an otherwise excellent setup. Any idea Hawk? Or just can't do it?

Welcome!

I could not agree more with your sentiment towards leveling. Thats my favorite part of any game with leveling up as well. Unlocking new skills and abilities and getting more and more powerful as you play doesn't get old. I just hit 80 with my 1st character, a few nights a go, and there definetly no shortage of things to do when you get there though. There the equivalent of raids of course, but theres also a tonne of other things to do as well.

Finally finished with Dancer in the Dark.

No Teragriff Pack Snack is annoying. I'm an elementalist for fucks sake, I should take care of them easily, but sadly my AoEs put me in a stationary position.

I did all the achievements with Zeroth and thought they were super easy. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think the end of the first got me a couple times when the vines, little dudes, and such are all up and the same time and the thing flies around on top of that seemingly forcing you to have to wait for him to land (?). I just made sure to spike him down with an enlarged rapid fire to down him quickly at that point.

Ugh, resorting to longbow

Does ele have any attacks that push back enemies slightly when it hits?

When I did this chevo with Varix, he used Staff 1 in guardian and I used Flamethrower #1 to kill all the mini teragrifs and still hit the boss when he was in range. We stuck to middle I guess because I don't remember ever getting pulled by vines.

You could try using the flamethrower that's in the instance for the whole fight.

I just finished that cheevo and guess what...

...there's this corner where you'll be safe from all attacks.

Fuck me I should have known of its existence.

Gust (Staff Air 3) and Updraft (Dagger Air 5) push back/launches enemies infront of the attack. Earthquake (Dagger Earth 4) knock back enemies around the caster. All of them can be combined with different attunements for bursting, aoe or stack might (in the case of earthquake, cuz its a blast finisher).

I started up a character today and realized that my brother's account is an EU account. I want to transfer to the US but it seems like I would have to pay.

Is there no way to transfer the account to a US account for free?

Yes, but...
I think, by deleting all of the characters on the account, you can trasnfer to any server/world for free.

If you want to keep your characters no but if you are in our Guild, we collect monies every Saturday during Guild Missions to help out people who want to transfer from EU to NA.

Get in touch with Hawkian if you are interested.

You can .

Just delete all characters on your account and you will be allowed to pick a new server for free

(I assume your character is still low level)

also your characters name is saved for 24 hours so you can pick it again.

Oh OK, thanks guy. I'll check with my brother if it's OK to delete his character. If not, I'll check with Hawkian.

Just as a heads up, because the wallet and bank are account-wide, you will not accidentally delete all of the gold / karma / tokens your brother earned, or all of the crafting materials he gathered.

If you have any equipment labeled "Account bound", you can put that directly into the bank. This includes gathering tools, salvage kits, armor and accessories. This is especially important if your brother had any of the Permanent gathering tools as those were about $10 US each. If he does, you'll likely need to head to a bank and find an NPC named the "Black Lion Weapon Specialist" who can convert them to account bound for safe keeping.

Also make sure any inventory bags (other than the starter backpack) are in your bank as well.

Finally, depending on how long it's been since he played, you may want to find a Black Lion Armor Specialist and talk to him about "town clothes"; your brother may have had some cosmetic gear that has since been replaced and as far as I know talking to the armorsmith and having him convert it is the only way to know of and preserve them.

I'm trying to think of anything else that no one has covered yet, deleting a character is kind of a tricky thing since you don't do it that often. Your names are preserved for 24 hours... that's really all I can think of.

Talking about those KarkaMordrems or Sylvari?

At first I thought they were like, incubation pods or something, but... yeah, they have legs, so they're something we haven't even seen. Interesting...

Sorry if i'm late to the party but i just came across this. Thank god Anet didn't settle with this design.

You're not wrong. I mean, that's still a really early screencap so I don't think the faces would be quite that bad, but I still prefer the plant-looking Sylvari by a huge margin. Kristen Perry totally nailed their design and from what I understand it was mostly a solo effort. Reeeeeeeaaaaallly glad she was there, because... dayumn,

Just brought the game, downloading now

Post your username (name.####) and you'll have a guild invite waiting for you. In the meantime, start thinking of character names now while you wait. Your name can be 3-19 characters, including multiple spaces. Some special characters are allowed, see here.

That link also mentions some naming conventions for each race, you don't have to follow it but it might help you come up with some name ideas (Asurans usually have double consonants, for example).

When asked to pick a world (server), if you want to roll with GAF your best bet is to pick Stormbluff Isle. However, because of two hugely important features that don't get nearly enough credit (guesting and megaservers) , you can roll on pretty much any world in North America and not only play with GAF, but the game will likely put you in the same maps as GAF once it figures out who you play with.

The only thing you will not be able to do with GAF if you roll on different server is the big World vs. World PVP mode, but since GAF is not focused on any single aspect of the game (we're too diverse for that) and doesn't have a particularly strong presence in WvW, you may want a more WvW-centric guild if that's one of your big draws to the game (you can belong to 5 guilds, but only "represent" one at a time). That said, we do have quite a few players who play WvW on a regular basis so if your interest in it is just mild, you might as well roll on SBI where you'll have friends. You can always pay gems to transfer later. Some people really love the higher level play that only happens in the gold league servers, but it can also be frustrating if you're not particularly hardcore about it.

If you are in the EU and roll on an EU server, you will not be able to play with GAF since they have separate data centers. However, we have a lot of players who play on NA servers from all over the world and report minimal latency issues, so you may just want to pick one of those

I still wonder why they showed Rytlock... only for him not to show up.

Maybe when all of the 'teaser quotes' are revealed, at the end they'll tell a story that goes beyond what we know right now. I mean, that's a complete shot in the dark, but maybe there's something going on there thematically and at the end of the Season when we look back at all of them there will be an "a-ha!" moment.

Probably not though, maybe just to remind folks Rytlock is still around or they planned to tease something bigger (
OMGRITUALISTINTHEEXPANSIONOMG
) and decided to wait at the last minute.

Whoah haha, OK thanks for this. I'll look into what items he has and figure out whether it's worth putting them in the bank. He has a level 50-something warrior so I assume he has a solid number of worthwhile items.

Edit: Actually, how do I get to a bank? Can I ask a guard where the bank is, WoW-style? Does every major city have a bank?

SO I just boght and downloaded the game, but I'm in EU. Is there a GAF presence on any EU server?

I think there may be a few people still on EU servers, but I'm not aware of any organized EU-specific GAF guild (at least, if there is one, they aren't posting here about it). There was one at the game's launch, but it died out and most people in it transferred to US servers. Most of them report very little (if any) lag.

If your character doesn't reference beaten-by-braincancer reed in some way, shape or form, i'll be totes disappointed.

Haha I will have to think of a just right name after I decide on a character.
