Welp, GAF servers will likely go nuclear in about 20 minutes.

I would just like to say ,no matter what might happen, it has been an honor GAFguild *Charrsalute.
May the six gods have mercy on our souls.

Stacking was never a necessity, and still isn't. It's just a very popular way of cheesing through content while grinding. I agree, it's incredibly boring and not fun at all. Sorry to hear about your guild not running it - you can be in multiple guilds at a time, perhaps join GAF Guild too, for when you want to play the game properly? :p

When I asked they just said "We don't talk about path 2." in a douchey manner.

Would I need 100% rep for you guild? My username is AimEd.3519(I was part of it once but then I was inactive for about a year.)

What happens in 20?

EDIT: Oh, some Sony presser thing. I doubt it'll make a dent in GAF's uptime.

@Aim_Ed: Nope. You just rep when you want. I'm in other guilds too, and rep GAF when I want to run Guild Missions on Saturday nights.

Since we have a lot of new members thanks to the sale, I thought now would be a good time to quickly cover Guild Missions.

Guild Missions and You
What are Guild Missions?
Guild missions are special guild-triggered events designed to be done by a large group of players. They come in 5 varieties;

  • Guild Challenge
A special task requiring coordination, such as defending a location from enemies or taking down multiple targets simultaneously.
  • Guild Puzzle
A sort of mini-dungeon that's focused on large coordinated puzzles rather than combat.
  • Guild Bounty
Within the world are specific named NPCs that wander around a zone and must be found and defeated within 15 minutes.
  • Guild Rush
Players are transformed into animals with a limited health pool and small number of skills and must complete a long obstacle course filled with traps and enemies. Despite the name, rushing is not actually the best method!
  • Guild Trek
A large number of specially designated spots must be found based only on a tiny screenshot of the location and a name. GAFGuild doesn't do these much.
How do they work?
One of the guild leaders / officers triggers the mission type from the guild menu and the game randomly selects which location / bounties to complete. We then move as a guild to that location (usually helping players who don't have the waypoint get there) and complete it together. Because we've been doing missions for almost two years now, most of us are very familiar with what needs to happen. We may often neglect to explain what will need to happen, so please speak up in guild chat or mumble and we'll quickly go over the basics. It is never a problem to ask what has to be done!

There are also a few specific tips for each mission type;
  • Challenge
    • Challenges always require the group to coordinate carefully, so paying attention to guild chat / mumble is essential.
  • Puzzle
    • Progress through the puzzle is gated by doors that shut after a short amount of time. It is essential that everyone be on the other side before this happens, as there is no way to open it again without starting over. Never go AFK during a puzzle and always stay with the group!
    • If you are killed, do not waypoint! We will revive you. If you don't see anyone around (usually someone always stays back to make sure everyone gets through), speak up in guild chat.
  • Bounty
    • When the bounty begins, we do not know where the target is at, only their name and what zone they are in. Don't wait for a waypoint; head to the zone and start looking!
    • Ask in Map chat if anyone has seen the target; not only will friendly players help out, but other guilds may also be looking and we can coordinate our efforts
  • Rush
    • Don't rush. This seems counter-intuitive given the name, but rushes last 30 minutes even though most can be completed in 5 or 6 minutes. Take your time, find all the traps.
    • When you finish, head back through the course and help your fellow guildies complete by killing enemies and using support skills.
Why should I join Guild Missions?
Guild Missions award a special currency,
20px-guild_commendatio9kuq.png
Guild Commendations. These can be used to buy everything from Ascended accessories to crafting items, guild siege for WvW to minis, and even an exclusive set of guild weapon skins.

Beyond personal rewards, it's also a great opportunity to get to meet your fellow guildmates and do something fun together as a group. We tend to all get on Mumble as well (instructions and download link are in the OT), and even if you can't or do not wish to talk, it's still a very lively atmosphere.
What level do I need to be?
Because missions are selected at random, we never know in advance what level will be required. Puzzles never require anything higher than 25, but Rushes can fall anywhere between level 15 and 80. We will usually try for the lowest-level bounty targets available. We will also try to run players through hostile territory if at all possible, but if the level difference is just too great, you may have to sit one mission out. Sorry!

Where do missions take place?
Because they are randomly selected, we never know where for sure. However, Miktar has compiled an awesome list of waypoints that you can grab to be ready for whatever RNGesus throws at us.

We do not usually form up prior to missions (we used to have a nice, cozy bar in Lion's Arch, but some psycho bitch blew it up), but lately we've gotten into the habit of hanging out on Stormbluff Isle (the actual in-game location), You can get there easily from Lion's Arch by heading south into Bloodtide Coast and following the road due south. It's a fairly large island with a lighthouse.

When do missions start?
We run Guild Missions every Saturday at 9pm Eastern / 6pm Pacific. We usually get started within the first 10 minutes, but try not to be late.

We also run Makeup Missions on Sundays at 3pm Eastern / Noon Pacific, for those who were unable to attend missions the night before due to prior engagements or time differences (we have a lot of international players). Even if you received commendations the previous evening, volunteers are always appreciated as we do not always have the numbers to run all of the mission types.

Anything else?
  • Have fun!
  • Stay for the guild lotto! (details in the OT)
  • Always run from Tom.

Back when I ran dungeons, I often did "ac 1,2,3". Found plenty of people running path 2. But sure, it's probably the least run out of the 3..

Edit: Unpopular opinion , but I actually think stacking at/behind a pillar for Ghost Eater is a smart idea, generally. Since there's a window of vulnerability that you have to damage him fast. Need all the might and such in one place. People who stack the ac1 boss to a corner though....it just seems pointless. Just fight him whereever and kill him dead.

Yeah I agree. Want to drop ghost eater quick or you have to do two traps. The Howling King and Rumblus die faster to just charging in these days.

Why don't people do AC P2?
my favorite <3 Are you in NA? You could always join and switch to repping GAF to ask for any takers.

If everybody goes in melee (or close) as they should for Ghost Eater, you are basically stacking no matter where you kill her/him, and the pillars keep your risk of getting an aoe field spit right on top of the group, so I really don't disagree in the least. You need quick damage at minimal risk to win the fight without reloading any traps (ideally without loading a third or even second at all). It's not like you can stack and eliminate the need to utilize the mechanics of the fight to make him/her damageable.

Stacking is deeply not a necessity and bores me to tears. I really dig GW2's combat system and nullifying it in the interest of efficiency strikes me as the kind of thing I would do if I were being forced to play this game for a school assignment or something. AC3 is a wash, takes some skill and situational awareness to kill "in the open" even though it's faster, and I've seen PUGs wipe trying plenty of times. In CoE, stacking on the boss is a for the most part a relatively decent tactic as it plays to the specific abilities the boss has (though I have seen it go horribly wrong on paths 2 and 3). But AC1, SE3, TA bosses, and most of the others, it's just a little silly how reliant people are on it. Last few times we've fought the SE3 destroyer we smoked him without standing in a little corner nook. Actually, when we recently 4-manned Tazza in SE1 in her intended room with Kaeyi, it really got to me in terms of how complacent the average "dungeon runner" has become over the years. There are some legitimately fun combat challenges in this game that are regularly subverted or avoided altogether. While I can definitely understand the role this plays if you care more about the acquisition of tangible reward with the quickest complete times possible, that just doesn't interest me :( Luckily for me, our guild has been extremely accomodating of my inefficient ways and willing to run stuff legit, which has massively contributed to my enjoyment of the game.

I think Ghost Eater is a girl. I don't know why.

edit: Hey, awesome guild missions post retro!

right now I'm putting together the jumping puzzle event one for tomorrow afternoon following guild makeups.

I agree on SE3. Even pugs used to just face tank the guy and now you have to fight him on a wall. Why? It seems like mostly the same thing. Similar to how you mention everyone in melee is nearing a stack anyway. As long as everyone is on the same page (ie, not 2 people going to a pillar/wall and 3 people going in and the group wiping due to poor communication), then I think either one works fine enough for me.

I wonder if a lot of the stack spots are old relics in a post-fgs4 world that people are unwilling to depart from.

I still think stacking is useful for ghost eater. Pulls him through the trap and straight into the damage. Same with golems in SE1, keeps them all together and the whole group protected. But not needed in se3, ac1, others. It's also helpful for the aetherblade fractal near the cannons to get all the mobs together and stay out of the fire. Even the gaffractal group did that. It doesn't entirely have to be one thing or the other.

The Cryptarch's Bane
Season 2 Guild Event: JumpGAF Retrospective Runaround - 4:00PM EST, 12/7/2014

The most recent, release, Seeds of Truth, added a gigantic, sprawling jumping puzzle to the Silverwastes known as the Drydock Scratch Retrospective Runaround- so named because if you've been keeping up with the releases and spending time in the Silverwastes recently, this puzzle will take you all around its canyons, above and below familiar landmarks, and truly show off the environmental design of the zone.

Which is why even though it's mainly underground, you wind up with shots like this:

It's also filled with Skritt for people who like that kind of thing
me
.

We're going to run this as a guild and ensure No One Gets Left Behind. This is a very long, extremely confusing puzzle with many dead ends, switchbacks and red herrings. It is so huge in scale that it uses a checkpoint system that differs from any other in the game. To simplify how it works: if you pay a Skritt named Kit a gold, he'll be a teleport to your most recently checkpoint ("Milestone") for an hour, and typically, he'll be mysteriously available nearby whenever you fall.

To get there, there's a new Skritt tunnel from the NE Silverwastes, Picaroon Scratch.
Entering here will get you to the Drydock Grotto WP which marks the official start to the puzzle.

Anyone can attend! If you're low level, we'll do some crafty escorting from Brisban Wildlands- there's no combat involved in this jumping puzzle at all.

Actually, for that matter there's not all that much in the way of tricky jumping either. This one is heavy on the "where-the-hell-do-I-go?!" aspect. ;) Cool reward, too.

If you've got a Mesmer you can bring for the good of the guild, please don't hesitate to do so! There are many ways to "strand" yourself off the intended path and we want to give Kit as little business as possible!

We'll be starting at 4:00PM or after our makeups, whichever is the latter! If you're on prior to 4 and need an escort, please speak up in guild chat.

Hope to see you there!

Yep.

The Skritt in the Silverwastes had a ship southwest of Rata Sum and ventured north through Maguuma. The route they took also puts them near two important Skritt scratches too; the Anthill in Metrica Province and Cragrock Palace in Drytop (where the Skritt Queen lives).

The map definitely lines up in places, but the scale is stretched and some places are off. The distortion is worse the further north you go. For example, Ventry Bay in Caledon is pretty obviously drawn, but the southern coast of Kryta is too far north. I wouldn't count on Skritt to be reliable map-makers, but they have the big features more or less where they should be (except Southsun, strangely).

Probably not important, but it is part of the map we've never been to.

About the SE3 destroyer, I still prefer to stack in the corner as this lets me GS #3. That's an easy 8-10k dmg every 7 seconds.

Stacking can feel dull, but there aren't enough drawbacks to not do it in most cases. I feels like some small changes to some bosses attacks, or messing with their AI would do wonders, like what happen with the Spider Queen. Anything to outweigh the player benefits of fields, shouts, combos, and cleaving.

Engineer has become my favorite class in this game and I think Mesmer is right up with him and a big part of this is how unique these classes feel to me. I haven't played many MMO games but I can't recall any class from the ones I have played feeling a whole lot like those two. I've played an engineer in Anarchy Online and WildStar but they are pet classes in both of those games. Esper in WildStar is the closest thing I can think of as being like Mesmer but that's sort of a stretch. I played a Bounty Hunter in The Old Republic but I really don't remember much about it, although I can't help but feel they were similar.

So, for those of you that have played a lot of games in this genre, what other games feature classes similar to the Engineer and Mesmer in Guild Wars 2?

Also question : should i keep my pics quoted like this ?

I realize that large pics can give issues for people with less then optimal internet connections but since they are only Lossless JPEG's i assume they would load fine for most .

yes please. loading may be a problem for some but for me it's just that pages with lots of unquoted large images make scrolling through the page on mobile considerably less pleasant.

Also if anyone's interested I use the Imagus extension for chrome so just hovering over the quoted images shows them at full resolution, pretty neat.

No, no. The warrior greatsword 3. Whirlwind. It chews big foes up when all the hits land.

Got the dye I wanted and hit the goofy gold-level I wanted too. Hoorah. Still not crazy about giving it all to another player just cause they got a lucky drop, but the forge is so risky.

Much as the map makes me rage, comebacks on Courtyard are some Michael Jordan level stuff.

Any newer people:

Guild missions starting soon, 10-20 minutes and will be going on a bit after that. Log in if you want to join :)

Edit: We have some people working on a triple wurm kill that will go until 9:20 ish eastern time (25 minutes from now). So we may just be slightly late. Fashionably, of course.

First of all I would to thank everyone for all their help and support for new players like myself. It's a huge help as this game has a lot of differences from other Classic MMOs. Coming from someone that plays FFXIV all the time, this game is taking some getting used too.

I've decided to roll an Asuran Theif on our server. Also have a Ranger and Guardain on back up because I love their look but not so much the feel.

One question: why do I have some skills that I have to pay for and others I earn? Am I going to be putting a lot of real money into this game?

Hope to see some of you on soon. My Display name is Squadron.9053
I would love to play with some fellow gaffers from time to time if any mods are on to add me.

Oh definitely not, Real money is never needed for anything.

I'm not quite sure what you're referring to in terms of "paying" for skills, unless you mean the skills that require Skill Points to unlock. Skill Points are earned from levelling, and there are Skill Point Challenges around the world that when you complete them, give you points. Look for this icon on your map:
Skill_point_empty.png

Skill challenges are locked for new accounts until a character reaches level 13.

8 skill points are earned at levels 20, 26 and 32.
7 skill points are earned at levels 38, 44, 50 and 56.
6 skill points are earned at levels 62, 68, 74 and 80.

By the time you hit 80, you'll likely have enough Skill Points to unlock all the Skills that go into your Utility, Healing and Elite slots.

You do not have to spend any real money in Guild Wars 2. You can play this game for the next five years without spending a cent, and you won't be hampered in any real way.

Oh awesome thanks everyone!

Yea I didn't mean pay real money for skills, it just looked like I had to spend in game gold if I wanted a skill early and meant I could use real money to buy that. Which I wasn't opposed of, I'm guilty of spending a lot in Dota 2 lol.

I'll be on later tonight for a bit, I'm on my laptop at work and have to wait for the drunks to leave lol.

Is there anyway to get the asura's skin color green?

No official support, but we have lots of guild members that swear by it. Information is in the OT, just scroll down until you see the big controller picture.

Skills you don't. There's some traits you have to spend in-game gold on if you don't want to do the unlocks for them. Some are relatively easy and some are amazingly annoying. By the time you're high enough level to be able to use them you'll probably have enough gold from regular play to at least buy the ones you want.

Ah, awesome. I downloaded it, but the instruction file is all jumbled and I can't really make heads or takes about it? If someone can maybe copy past and PM the text in it for me, that's be great. I tried re-downloading it, but it's still all over the place.

*edit*

Tried running the xpadder.exe and this is showing up?

run it in compatibility mode for vista

4) If you're using Windows 7 or later, right click Xpadder.exe, then select Properties, click the Compatibility tab, then check "Run this program in compatibility mode for", and select "Windows Vista" in the dropdown.

I'm really stupid. *Currently incompatible with Windows 8*
Sorry for making you guys waste your time helping me, if there's another alternative, please point me in the right direction.

My best advice is the Google Win8/Xpadder and see if there's a new version..

PS:whatever downloads you find, click at your own risk..

Alright, I decided to go with Pinnacle, can anyone tell me if the profile is at all similar to the one used on Xpadder?

Uhm, which server should I join?
Stormbluff isle is where GAF resides. It actually doesn't matter too much, though.

Also, welcome to guild wars 2 to all the fresh meat rally bait new players! I look forward to playing with y'all and helping out where needed. I love showing this game off almost as much as the devs.
