The Cryptarch's Bane
I feel confident that new members hate our guild, and me in particular, largely finding both to be worthless and uncouth :D

Happy Wintersday!
I hate to say it, but I finally got around to the latest living story episode... and it's kind of a stinker so far. The story's good, execution of missions was bad. I don't think this has happened to me yet in Guild Wars 2, but I actually got pissed enough to log off right in the middle of one (
Caithe trying to sabotage the shields to knock Vorpp out
).

I just can't stand going through missions when I'm not my character. I don't want to use a bundle or a disguise and fumble through with skills that aren't my own. I rolled a Mesmer for a reason - using Mesmer skills appealed to me. This mission was actually worse - not only was I not me, but I was hardly using not-me's skills.
Stand there and wait in stealth and time up your sabotage fucking perfectly unless you want to get jumped by 6 golems. Then (possibly) die.
Frustratingly enough, I probably could have easily handled some of the "you fucked up, time to die" moments on my Mesmer, whose skills I'm familiar with.

Not everything can appeal to everyone, I guess. I like bosses with interesting mechanics. We've had really good ones so far. Perhaps I just kinda suck at
thief skills
or am just uncoordinated (likely) but this was probably the worst LS episode for me. Again, not the story, just the action. Haven't finished it yet, not looking forward to trying it again.
Just to advocate for the devil a moment: for people like me who love thief skills, I found Caithe's moveset sublime and so, so much fun, and of course it made me thirstier than ever for new weapon skills. That elite is the most gloriously broken thing I've gotten to play with in GW2 and I'm very thankful it's available in a repeatable context.

I can easily see how such a rigid shift in how you must approach encounters- compared to every other episode prior, really- would be frustrating to plenty of people though.
He gain flurry stacks of he hits you. At 25 stacks it's 1 hit kill maybe even less than 25 stacks might be 1 hit if you are zerker.

Flurry can be taken off if you dodge his attacks 4 times I think.
When he's at 20+ stacks, on my thief (any build) any attack of his is a one-shot.

Dodging 4 attacks in a row not only removes all stacks, but stuns him for 2 or 3 seconds. Shortbow thief with Withdraw and Roll for Initiative and this is fun stuff. You can make a fool of him. You can actually almost control the pace of the fight because he can be provoked.

I want to contrast this with the Risen Drake Broodmother that spawns in Straits for the Baby Quaggan Tonic quest. That thing has no weaknesses so far as I'm concerned, and a slight mistake is instant death for one person. If anyone can solo that thing, that'd be the ultimate accomplishment IMO- not writing off Lupicus in the least bit whatsoever, but I seriously believe this thing would be tougher.

Okay, so much stuff to think about, let's consider the following:

1) WvW GAF Attack Murder Squad Death Party: Sneak attack rules mean that our tried-and-true, barely-organized roaming semi-havoc "I-totally-bet-we-can-take-that-tower" squads could have a tangible direct point impact on our score. Without map swords we can chill on mumble, rotate and get into fights at our leisure without worrying about PPT in the way we'd usually have to in order to contribute.

Let's aim to make this a reset event, Friday night 12/19, at 8:00PM EST (uh, right? please correct me if wrong)

2) GAFGuild Secret Santa: This idea was voiced on our last mission night and I think it's a great idea. I would love it if someone with any bit of experience running a secret santa can take the reins on this one? I can provide all the announcement muscle and organizational stuff you might need. Anyone wanna volunteer for the job?

3) A Very Orry Christmas: We've still got quite a few members around that were lucky enough to experience both Operation Tidal Sword and Occupy Orr; now, with a new influx of members that have yet to see how fun it can be to tear a path through Zhaitan's neighborhood as a guild, I keep coming back to this for a Wintersday event idea. We could bring the tinsel and lights and make Orr a little cheerier... send some presents the way of Grenth's Acolyte and get Malchor some nice shiny new chisels. The only thing is that you'll really need a level 70ish character to survive in our GAF mob down there, so I'm thinking we'll leave this til the end of the even span, to give as many people as possible a chance to get there.

I've done Secret Santa with my school friends for the last 7 years, I'd be willing to do this. I think I have a script somewhere to assign givers to recipients (without me knowing to preserve the "secret" in Secret Santa) - if not I'm sure I could write one real quick or use someone else's. It would require email addresses if everyone's OK with that.

I've never done anything like an MMO Secret Santa though. What sort of things do you even give? Minis? Outfits from the gem store? Random exotic skins? I don't know most of the people in the guild on a personal basis so it would be hard to get something non-generic :p

Well, let's just set a max gold limit- then it can either be that you convert into gems and buy something from the gem store or just some item obtainable otherwise and mail it to your person. Minis and other novelty items like tonics are probably great bets. If you happen to know what your assignee might like you can work with that, but obviously if we have lots of signups, it'd just be about something fun or ridiculous that anyone might enjoy as a surprise. No real harm here, I mean, I very much doubt we'd have people complaining about getting ugly wool socks for a present- er, wait. I just doomed someone to get 2000 Ugly Wool Socks didn't I XD

If anyone doesn't want to PM you their email address I think we can probably work something out for security purposes

You're joking, right?

I can make a YouTube video if you would like, just as soon as people stop jumping in every time I get her below 50% health.

Damn you, Megaservers.

fine then I guess not for warriors.

I tried the one in SoD three times and had people jump in to "help" every time, so here is Malchor's Leap.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRNkpyM_3r0

I'll admit this one is easier because it is on level ground, and half of your attacks aren't being blocked by you and the drake being on different sides of a hill.

I'll also admit this is about the most boring method I could come up with to do it. But it's a weakness!

Hawkian

The Cryptarch's Bane
hmm if I'm not mistaken, I've soloed that one myself on thief or very nearly done so. I thought the one in the straits event actually had unique behavior or extra damage, soooomething that made it crazier, but it could be just the terrain that makes the difference.

edit: I am getting flashbacks of trying to use Withdraw/jump back and getting stuck in place on the hill ;_;

Norn Guardian, you can tell because Virtue of Courage is visible in the second image when the greatsword is drawn. That hair style is also one of the newer Norn ones, I don't think humans have anything that layered / feathery yet.

Edit: Yep, I was right.

Yeah, it's funny: You can see GW2's age in its textures, but it's still strong artistically. I know I'm using Sweet FX, but the game still uses a variety of different colors/lighting in areas to set the mood. Everything is just slightly stylized enough to have something that I think will hold up over time.

Hawk: I'm disappointed that none of those titles include: "GAFGuild Saves Wintersday"

Huh;
Wintersday Gift Tree
  • The latest trend in Tyrian holiday decor, these trees provide Wintersday gifts year-round and are attractive in any home, whether it’s in the heart of the Black Citadel or the outskirts of Rata Sum. Receive yours by helping the orphans of Divinity’s Reach find their lost ornaments. Also, the Star of Gratitude provides additional rewards for those of you with empyreal fragments to spare.

Neat. Looks like you just have a little story mission to get it too?

Good art direction > raw graphics power.

You see this a lot with Nintendo games too; the Wii U is a vastly underpowered machine compared to the PS4 / XBone, but Nintendo's art direction is so solid that their games look much better than they rightfully should.

While Sony and Microsoft keep using all of that power to make things look more realistic, Nintendo keeps using theirs to make things look more interesting. So while something like Titanfall may look pretty 'real', it's not as interesting to look at as something like Smash Bros. That's good art direction and you get so much more mileage out of it than just throwing a shitload of power at things.

Should have put it in Hoelbrak. I mean, a mountain village with giant lodges? It's a place where everyone drinks, parties, and watches football (Well, Keg Brawl) next to giant fireplaces. Sounds perfect for a winter holiday. Plus, Hoelbrak never gets events, it stinks!

But nooooooo, gotta appease the humans.

The Cryptarch's Bane
Oh they decked out DR? =D Is Lion's Arch changed too, or just too broken for the citizens to bother?

A new Gifts Mail Delivery mail carrier is available in the Upgrades category of the Gem Store for 350 gems.
That's more in line with the pricing we'd be okay with for those, eh?

Between the match making system, new players, and the new (thief/engineer) dailies, pvp went pretty bad for me this morning. Might keep my distance until things settled down a little.

Its possible to have both, even if its rarer than it should be. The indie scene on PS4 is doing it pretty well. Ratchet and Clank managed it last gen. Although realistic, Uncharted always had crazy beautiful, colorful locations. The train level in UC2 is probably one of the best things around. imo GW2 manages both quite well. Archage and FF14 look weird at times, but GW2 manages to be colorful without goofy anime-esque stuff.

@Hawk: We tried the new Raid in Destiny last night. Holeee cow, that was rough. Took us two hours to get through just the *start*, the run through the dark to get to the door. Tried the door sequence a few times, but ran out of time (people had to go to bed). It's not overly complex, but a lot can go wrong very fast. I wasn't helping either, being only light 27 - going to try and hit 30/31 by next Wednesday so I can actually do and take damage.

This is what happens when you have people who hate WvW/PvP..

I think the truth is, this is what happens when PvE is your bigger community, because that is what the game is primarily focused on, and more people prefer PvE than PvP. It's not that weird: I remember Treyarch talking about when Black Ops was at its peak, less than half of the people that bought the game ever even loaded the MP side of it.

That's not to say PvP or WvW in GW2 is dead - far from it - but they *are* the smaller playerbase. It's not about anyone hating anything (though I'm sure some people do hate player vs player), but more, not everyone is into it. Why needlessly politicize it?

EDIT: Whoa, they really went all-out with Divinity's Reach.

Yeah, it's nutso, I've never seen an encounter designed quite like it in a multiplayer game, but it's really satisfying to beat. That's by far the easiest segment of the raid by the way :D When you get more confident with that part it's amazing how different it feels. We just finally beat the boss last night, our third total night of attempts, and I've still got plenty to learn. 27 is essentially out of the question for a level 30 raid though- you could make it past where you're talking about, but there will be enemies that you literally cannot damage at that level in the latter half.
Of course Mini Festive Lord Faren is in his underwear, LOL.

So I bought some keys and now I have 2 claim tickets. I almost never use torch with my Mesmer, but that thing is kinda sweet. Also thinking about the mace for when I level up my Guardian. But that hammer. And the shield is kinda neat, but it's a shield.

Quaggan hates difficult decisions.

How the flip does the Winterday's Choir daily thing work? Did it three times for nothing. * And then I randomly get it before I even get on the stage. What.

Some huh? HUH?

Mace is something I don't see Guardians using often, so I wouldn't worry about it.

lol, well I had a few scraps to begin with, and now I have 10. Soooo....some :)

Yeah I guess Guardians might not use maces much, but mine does. The meta can blow me. I modeled him after Taric from LoL and named him Taricson because he's a Norn and it kinda sounded Norny. He has purple armor. It's pretty funny, people occasionally send me whispers telling me how much they like the character or ask me to stop running so they can take a screenshot with him.

Also, dude, have you seen the mace auto attack animation for Norn dudes? The wind up on the third strike is awesome. It's almost as good as Necro male Asura axe auto.
