So what if it's just a new season?

What if everyone is just way overestimating what this is? I mean, they went two years saying that they didn't need paid expansions, and talked about how they were giving us more value than we could have received with an expansion.

I'm not saying they're wrong: they've given a lot. However, it sounds schizophrenic to go and release a paid expansion now.

That's what I'm worried about. The community is starting to hype itself up to the point where anything less than an overoptimistic and idealized mega expansion tengu spears weapons flying mounts, is going make the community flip its shit and make it 2012 all over again.

It's pretty uncommon for a game to trademark a logo for something that's a digital only expansion.

For example compare how the expansions to Hearthstone are (not) trademarked versus how the ones for World of Warcraft are trademarked.

The main thing it has to be something else besides LS3 is the fact they are at Pax at all. They haven't done a Pax presentation (let alone for 90 minutes on the main stage) since before launch. They are dragging the game director and the president of the company along with all sorts of GW2 bloggers, press etc to Texas for this thing. Maybe we won't get tengu like people think, but it's going to be something other than just a new season.

Edit: the Tequatl announcement was big and during pax (I think) but not part of the actual convention. It was ANet's own thing off site. Someone can correct me on that.

TBF if that's the case then Anet shares equally the blame for putting that Hype trailer at the end of the season .

Anet has started this Hype train themselves and know what they get themselves into

Ask yourself this : If this is simply S3 + Feature pack , why is ANET themselves making such a huge deal about it ?

Why put that hype trailer at the end of the season ?
Why have a 90 minute presentation on the mainstage with ANETS founder if this is not Huge and simply S3 ?

Well, both you and I know well enough that it wouldn't have mattered: Say Colin's going to speak anywhere and people will just about expect Guild Wars 3 to be announced at that point.

It's just that a paid expansion seems incredibly unlikely given everything they've said up to this point. It's so opposite everything they've said that it would have to be a top down decision.

They don't do things like other MMO companies. It's almost a point for them to not do things like other MMO companies, for better or worse.

I am going to have to go with this :
I'm thinking the expac is free, rolled into the base game and that's the new box on the shelf.

Just theorizing , but i suspect the base game we have now will disappear and be replaced by the new box which will include the base game + expansion and that one will become the base gw 2 box .

And this is why I assume *nothing* until they get on stage and TELL ME what they're doing.

Because people are *insane*. :p C'mon, a dude gets on stage with a Battletoads shirt, NeoGAF loses its shit thinking next-gen Toads game incoming!

People hype themselves up WAY out of proportion, because that's what marketing has done.

I think the latter will still be true, but I think the sale price and timing of sale don't jive with the expansion being free for existing owners. I think this is more to capitalize on what they are announcing to help secure strong marks for the quarter the expansion does land.

Damn you and your common sense! I'm always gonna be the guy ignites the flashbang and puts it in my trousers as I scream for the medics. You can't regulate common sense Miktar! It doesn't work that way!
Quaggan Spears on Tengu Mounts are coming, and only you, Rob Pardo and a sixth season of community is going to stop it! So bring it on! Let's dance!

.. I actually think Ashodin is on to something. If the base game got updated, it would mean that the gem store is doing okay!?

But we all saw the numbers of most profitable cash shop games from 2013 - Guild Wars 2 was not even in the top 10! I mean.. can they really make things go around by making a digital expansion like that?

What if the expansion is really just some sort of boxed version of season 2 released in stores?

is it bad all I am expecting from an expansion is another class and more variance to the daily quests? (I mean go gather x item in y zone, go view a vista in z zone, go do 4 events in zz zone.) maybe that changes with a higher level account but it's sure not exciting right now... I am just using it as a way to unlock the maps in the starting areas lol.

Then why did the trailer show things that happen after season 2?

I think they should remove the Dailies entirely. Replace it with a dynamic "Recommended" list, that shows things like "explore this zone you've never seen" or "do this story mission" or "you've never done this dungeon path", no rewards or anything, just serving suggestions.

All dailies do is make people think they have to chase meaningless carrots, and for what - a bit of extra XP and some resources. I don't even bother with Dailies anymore. I log in to play the game, not check off a list. Otherwise it becomes dangerously close to WoW "end game".

it would quite possibly go down as one of the stupidest hyped announcements in the history of video games if that was the case. right up there with ff7 on the ps4 :p

I do the dailys for now because there is a plus to them aside from doing them as I am still only level 22 on my highest character so the stuff matters a bit. a few more weeks though and I will likely at least drop the do 4 events one... the gather and view a vista ones though are really easy to get bonus items from

Thing is, outside of major content updates, that's pretty much the major draw to keep people playing the game and keep spending in the gem store.

Plus, they just revamped the daily system. Why would they revamp it if they were just going to remove it in an expansion?

I never said they were going to remove it. Just that I think they should.

With a $10 base game I'd be pretty surprised if it wasn't a regularly priced expansion pack.

It's not out of the realm of possibility, but it would surprise me if they had a different business model.

I'll go out on a limb and guess the expac is out in April at latest, depending on which fiscal year NCSoft wants this in.

Pretty much. Although I figure late Summer. Digital doesn't have to mean free. Its going to be the thing people complain about. I imagine there sizable segment of the players that have never used the gem store beyond gold to gems. Expansions are ANet's only way of getting at these people.

The Great Pre-Announcement Culling has begun.

Working on the gaming side thread for the announcement, will probably post it early morning Saturday since it's a thread for a Live Event.

Edit: Culling complete. Room for 115 players, everyone else has played in the last 3 months.

mwahahahaha

we are going to have so many returning players

Just to be safe, I'm going to send out GAFO invites to all of the officers so if we do need the overflow guild, everyone can get invited without delay.

When the game launched, we were at ~700 accounts, those were crazy days. I dunno if we'll go that big again, but big announcements like this do tend to bring a lot of people back, and based on the thread Kos made this morning more than a few are going to look in and see what's changed.

$10 makes me fearful of the gold spammers multiplying.

FFXIV's client costs $20 - $60.

I get Gold Spammer whisper *every fucking five minutes*.

No matter WHERE I am in the game world.

Client cost means nothing, it seems. Whatever ArenaNet is doing, they have a much firmer handle on goldsellerl spam, than sub mmos.

Guys I need class advice. I started getting bored of my thief around level 40 but I said fuck it and went up to 80 anyway. Not really feeling it anymore and I think I am just going to focus on a new guy but I am not really sure what to roll.

I feel like explaining exactly the type of character I want to play is a complete fools errand so I will just say that what I ended up not liking about thief is that dagger/dagger is the only weapon combo I found any real enjoyment in but it was really focused on burst damage which I am not a fan of. I guess to try and put it simply is that I enjoy when I have damage from multiple sources but I really don't like when I have buttons I am hitting for the sake of just doing more damage. Basically just interesting skill interactions is what I like in games and I'm curious what I should try.

Right now I am thinking Mesmer since I have gotten it to level 15 and it's been rather fun so far but I am curious if there is some other class I should check out.

Elementalist is a class with access to over 16 weapon skills during a fight. You combo yourself changing between the 4 elemental attunements, each having a different emphasis. I highly suggest giving it a go if you haven't.

I actually leveled all the way to 80 with my friend who was playing an Elementalist and it did seem amazing. Does group comp matter at all in this game for stuff like dungeons? Most of the time I am playing will probably be with him.

It only matters if you don't have much diversity in your party. Two elementalists with the same build can be problematic, but it's still doable for most groups. Either way, elementalists can have many different builds, like staff only, dagger/dagger, and so on, so don't worry about that.

so after looking at stuff I think I am gonna get a second account.
since the daily log ins get you 55 Laurel, and it seems that you can convert them into Heavy Crafting Bag for around a gold per, each month the second account would get around 50 gold, which is around 300 gems or so, which means every 3 months with just the daily log ins from the second account I could get a character slot on my main account (a $10 value) and thus after 3 months it would just be a currency generator for my main account at the worst case, while it would still have more slots for characters I want to goof around with.

on a different thought, how do the guild wars 2 people feel about account sharing? as in I would make sure to log into my alt account on a daily basis but my friend might play it from time to time?

thank you, that was fast... hugs on demand <3

headline is just, my sister was admitted to the hospital with some kind of really sharp stomach pain, middle of the night last night. we still don't know exactly what the deal is, they're just keeping her all morphined up and the specialist still hasn't actually made it there to see her and get tests done or whatever. I was there for a while but it was just a waiting game. people around me are getting pissed off about that, which is totally understandable but I also start to cringe whenever people start venting about how incompetent hospital staff are, like hey those are the ones that also do the fixing :S just other nonsense piling up too, nothing important, but... this won't really make sense to anyone but it's just been a shoddy 24 hours with regard to the human concept of "perspective"

hopefully, and most likely it's nothing serious at all, I mean she only has the one symptom... could be like freaking anything!

anyway sorry for the off-topic. not at alllllllllll my style to reach out but it's been an unusually off day to say the least. really appreciate it.

hahaha... well the math is sound.

if you would have fun with this, go for it! I spent more than $10 on my lunch yesterday -_- I wouldn't even feel right paying that for Guild Wars 2, my poor conscience. Seriously though it blows my mind they'd offer that. I honestly still have no clue what they're planning.
