I'll probably post the Gaming Side thread early tomorrow morning (like, 7am). Planning to get up, have some breakfast and buy my 10 o'clock ticket for the hype train to Excitement City.

It was amazing in theory, but it was over too fast to enjoy.

I have that ticket too!!

I won't be jumping on the hype train, just wait for them to announce whatever they gonna announce read it, and watch ya'll drool or hate anet...

Yeah, I don't expect anything like that to happen (thus the "stroke of insanity" comment), and I'm not even sure I'm explaining what's in my head right. It's not so much that the content is blocked or requires coordination to complete it so much as the zone is just really really dangerous if you're not tagging along with the heavily armed NPCs. Like convoys of those huge Charr warmachines, that kind of heavily armed.

I'm picturing the meta as something like escorting logging teams as they push into the jungle to clear roads, then escorting supply trains to little forward camps, establishing a network of Mordrem-proof waypoints... I like the idea of seeing the 'war effort' as it progresses deeper into enemy territory, though I admit it might not make for compelling gameplay.

I mean.. I understand what you mean in terms of a zone sort of.. developing over time. But we all know Anet isn't playing with that again. That's why I assumed something more along the lines of Orr or Silverwastes (though Silverwastes admittedly is much better).

It saddens me to see people think so narrowly when it comes to what HoT is going to be. All I see people talking about are things that other developers have already done for their MMO expansions. Yes, there's going to be new zones, new weapon types, new enemies, new skins, along with things from the CDI topics, and such. None of those things are groundbreaking, they're pretty much expected to come out of this. What people aren't thinking about is how ANet works. GW2 was their answer to the stagnant MMO formula. Their update cycle right out the gate was faster than the rest of the genre, you had updates every month, then they introduced the Living World which is a completely unprecedented content delivery system and TV show story telling format. Those then ran every 2 weeks.

So now we come to HoT, which is their answer to the MMO expansion. So I ask you, what makes you think ANet is just going to release a typical checklist MMO expansion and call it a day? ANet was founded and is driven entirely on innovation. All of the stuff the community wants is merely a sidedish compared to the main course. That main course being "how an MMO can grow its universe and that the Living World was just the beginning". This is what you need to be thinking about, they're going to introduce either an evolution of the LW concept or something new entirely. This is what will take up the meat of the presentation because it's something that will need a lot of time to explain. Now, I cannot even begin to speculate on just what this main course is because it's going to be something no one has ever seen before, BUT when we do see it, we're going to say holy shit, why hasn't anyone thought of that before? Remember reading the old blog posts back in the day and thinking why did it take so long for someone to do this? That feeling is going to be back tomorrow, mark my words. I will bet my GAF account on it.

Would you guys be disappointed if it is a traditional expansion? Reading the comments it seems many here is expecting it to me something crazily innovative and mind-blowing. Me personally i would be perfectly happy if it just new zones, class and skills. ANet has innovated in the past but i don't expect them to do it every time. Nothing wrong with a traditional expansion in my opinion.

ANet simply doesn't DO traditional anything. Expecting them to do what everyone else has already done is doing them a disservice. They're the only developer in the genre (EQN aside) that has done or continues to do anything remotely innovative.

I agree with Jira in that I think Anet is innovative* and they try to push the boundaries. I said as much yesterday that I truly respect the effort, and it's why they're one of my favorite devs.

But I wouldn't be disappointed with a "traditional" expansion. I would probably say it's what I expect at this point. I think the realities of development and the current gaming environment caught up to them so they have to play ball, so to speak. But I could be wrong as hell and Anet come out with that ridiculous magical shit. They're certainly capable of it.

I'm ready for that elementalist sword, brehs

Factions and Nightfall were their own, standalone games. That's a pretty big difference itself, but yeah, content wise they were pretty standard.

EOTN was completely a traditional expansion though.

Personally, I'm not expecting anything more than something equal to Living World S1, S2, plus the two feature packs in terms of content for HoT.

GW1 was and still is to this day a unique game that no one has copied or even attempted to. GW1 received new updates for only two years (Factions - EOTN) and at most by a team of 75 people in 07. They didn't have the man power, tech, or money at that point to do anything drastically different until 2007. During the development of Utopia, ANet started trying a lot of new ideas, some that would work within GW1 and others that wouldn't. Over time they had so many new ideas that they decided to make GW2. When GW2 started development (August 07), they looked at the genre and said we're going to do something drastically different from everyone else. They weren't swayed by the possibility of getting a massive piece of the WoW pie like every other MMO dev was. ANet was ready and willing to innovate when no one else was and even right now they're the only company who has an MMO on the market driven purely by trying new ideas.

It's a fallacy to assume because GW1 expansions were one way that GW2 might or will be too. They've specifically talked about how the LW was just the beginning which points to something much bigger than a traditional paint-by-numbers expansion.

Do you honestly think they'd Trademark something, put advertisements all over the internet, a big trailer at the end of the season, get every GW2 youtuber down there, get the press down there, bring down the president and game director of the company, on the main stage at PAX for 90 min, all to say "SURPRISE GUYS, WE'RE PACKAGING ALL OF THE CONTENT YOU'VE ALREADY PLAYED INTO ONE BOX FOR NEW PLAYERS! YOU CAN GO HOME NOW!" I have no words for what would happen.

What?

You're completely misunderstanding what I'm saying.

I didn't say they're just going to repackage it and put it in HoT, I'm saying in terms of the amount of content I'm expecting we'll get something equivalent to both seasons and both feature packs in HoT.

What do you mean by no updates? GW1 got lots of stuff after 2008. Constant balance updates, entire new pvp mode, new maps, the Traveler, daily Zaishen quests, new festival stuff, and all the GW beyond things. The live team kicked butt. 2009-2012 is probably when I sank the most hours into the game.

I'm mostly a happy at the prospect of a whole bunch of new content hitting the game all at once. No guides, no map spoilers, speculation, lots of explore, woot.

XP buff has broke the game. Disconnect, rollback. Disconnect, rollback. Wee.

Was referring more to no campaigns/expansion past 07.

Good thing the show will be 6:30pm local time, just an hour after I get back from work (yea, yea, I know, its saturday... :( ), so will have time to get fully ready for some
disappointment
.

Completely agreeing with Jira on the GW1 part. Back then Anet had a small team and not enough money (and definitely, they didn't have so much PR) to push the full potential of their ideas. Nonetheless, GW1 and its expansions is still a unique online game (not even a "mmo" in the traditional way) full of innovative and new mechanics, that noone else tried to copy, even remotely.

But for GW2 things drastically changed... for the worse imo. Yea, great game, still new ideas and inovative gameplay, but the whole support up to this point, is pretty meh. Sure, lots of updates and at really impressive rates.
But their PR is overshadowing the actual ingame content.
Remember the first Mad King update? Way too big words for a awesome event you would not like to miss at an exact hour (was late at night for me). There were even countdows, and in the end it was just a cutscene of Mad King popping out of the fountain.
Remember how they promoted the first Karka update? Another wave of way too big words, a massive new threat, how it will change the face of Tyria forever, etc, etc and in the end a small island poped out of no where with karkas staying destroying the lighthouse of LA and thats about it. :D

True that they tried new ways of telling stories with one time big events. But the quality was low, and the marketing was just too aggressive for something of not that much importance.
Same story with the first LS season. WvW and sPvP suffer the same fate. For sPvP specificly, 2 years and an half, and we are still playing the same old conquest, on the same 4 maps... (not counting Courtyard and Skyhammer, because they are not even in rated play and the scrapped Capricon... cuz it was scrapped). Still broken matchmaking and leadeerboards, and empty promises of ladder seasons, autmated tournament play and bigger initiative to participate in them.

So for the upcoming show, I'm expecting more of the same... treatment. Big, big words for how awesome the new content will be, how they listen to all feedback, how they work on everything and in the end, we will get half of what was promised, because the rest is still not ready for them to "talk about it". The story after LS2 will continue, new zones and enemies, even new dungeons are to be expected. Over all life-quallity changes will be there too, even precursor scavenger hunts, guild halls and weapons(new skills with them) are possible. But somehow I'm pessimistic about whole new continents, new professions, new mechanics/systems like heroes/henchmen or two-profession characters (like gw1). And the long promises in most of the CDI and PvP/WvW forums will remain just that, promises.

Of course, we have almost no info on whatever to expect, so my guess is as good as any other. I just have my expectation set as low as they can get, based on the nonstop playing of GW2 since the first closed press alpha.

And I, sure as hell, want Anet to prove me wrong on every point and announce something absolutely massive and deliver it. I will be the happiest person around here. Till then, i'm not hyping. Not. One. Bit.

It can be dangerous to go down a check list that says "Eye of the North had this much content, so GW2 should have this much content".

Don't get me wrong, there is nothing I would rather see than playable Cantha and Elona, and Fire Isles, and Charr Homeland and more Mists all in one expansion, but if it is rushed, or not done with justice, or hampered somehow, then what is the point?

GW2 took a long as time to make, but I am still playing, I am still taking high level toons back to earlier parts of the game, and getting milage out of events that I've not done.
Well designed, multi-purposed design is so much better.

But Cantha and Elona felt like 80% of GW1. They where just a tiny bit smaller. Elona felt massive.

None of you have playable centaurs on your bingo cards. Why do you want to lose?
The devs get so much flak for charr tearing through their armor, no way we're getting an oddly shaped race.

That said, canthan birds are the obvious choice. Or those winged assassin dudes.

What if Monks made a return? Or like a combo of Monks and Dervish and Paragon all mixed into one?

Imagine a Kodan or Quaggan Monk-Dervish-Paragon. WOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWW with a one-handed polearm and an off-hand whip.

THAT WOULD BE SICK

Quaggan monk.

That's the dream right there.

Quaggan monk.

But then let me let you taste my olive branch as I extend it to you, my dear Kanik (okay that came out, creepppppyyyyyy)

- But would you actually want a Monk?

Or would you just want the Monk Armor? Because doesn't Guardian Staff, Guardian Shield/Scepter/Focus, have the essence of the Monk experience? Perhaps outside of 55hp Monk, but we know this is impossible. This can never happen in GW2.

I think. I think what we actually want is this:

It's the armors we miss mate. That is the dream. Sandals! Eskimooian-Winter outfits (that thick leather), the body paint armor that glows (imagine the dye possibilities) , the tibetan/indian/chinese/burmese monk robe look!

First time in years I've set my alarm clock for saturday morning

Ugh, I'm usually up by now on weekdays, but on a Saturday it just feels... wrong. Then I remember what day it is....

Pb2SWxh.gif

So, the announcement thread will be live in about 15 minutes. Let's try to use that for reactions / discussion if at all possible, to avoid posting in two places and because the OT's post count is is getting up there (1558 posts left, give or take, and 19k is when I usually start working on the next OT).

If it gets too... um... "Gaming side-y" in there, feel free to bail out on that though.

Retro made hype train thread yet?

It's not even really a "hype thread" so much as a "Hey, there's a big announcement today and a sale too, and here's a bunch of info about the game if you haven't played it or are just coming back."

It'll be a hype thread when we have details to get hyped about. Right now it's just... news about when those details will be out. Which is why I'm waiting until 2 hours before the stream goes live, because there's no point in having the thread when it's just going to be ignored for a few hours at best and trolled for a few hours at worst.

Only asked because on previous page you said you would post it at 7 but 9 a sounds good time to post it.

I want to make sure I subscribe so it doesn't get lost on gaming page.

Haven't played for ages. Might as well kill all my characters and join whatever server you guys are on if this ends up to be exciting.

How much is a server change again?

(And no, I can't guest, I'm from Europe)

It's cheaper to buy a new account for 10e.

Anyone going be on Mumble during the livestream?

I was considering it, but I'd like to be able to hear what's being said instead of... I dunno... Ash hyperventilating
JUWnj.gif
.

I did just set up a new "Livestream Chatroom" on mumble that auto-mutes everyone who enters, so it's basically functioning as a chat room. Of course, if people want to jump into one of the many GW2 rooms to talk, that's perfectly fine too.

How are Mesmers and Elementalists these days?

There have been quite a few balance passes since launch, Mesmers were improved a bit (lots of new support options, especially via Mantras). Elementalists are still going strong, dunno when the last time you played was but they've gotten some interesting traits along the way.

ArenaNet doesn't make sweeping balance changes, just little nibbles and tweaks, mostly.

How much is a server change again?

Depends on the server population:
Medium: 500 Gems
High: 1000 Gems
Very High: 1800 Gems

All of the servers are currently "Very High", however. It changes depending on the time of day, and right now it seems like everyone is on killing time until the announcement.
