Guild Wars 2 - Path of Fire |OT| Mount and Shining Blade

Decided to give this a spin and can't even get into Lion's Arch. Launch woes, I guess.

Not that it matters much. Going on vacation soon and I can't settle on with class to go anyway. Looking at the videos in the op none of the specs excite me too much. Gonna see where things are next month.

Ok so Jackal heart seems to have a small bug.

If it doesn't show on the map, restart the client and it will show.

Just incase anyone has the same issue, happened to both me and my partner.

edit: Just got my Jackal

So cute <3

I just bought Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire. I haven't played since the vanilla version since before it went F2P. So I'm really lost with the revamped traits and specializations system and generally where and how to get the latest greatest armor and weapons. I have a level 80 Mesmer and Engineer. My mesmer build was illusion shatter based if and my engi was flamethrower based. Now I'm completely lost as to how to play them because it's been so long and so much seems to have changed. The deadeye specialization for thief looks really cool and I'm thinking of using one of my level boosters to max out Thief.

tl;dr I'm returning to GW2 after a huge hiatus and am lost as to how to proceed/gear up/build my stats and I need help being pointed in the right direction. Is Lion's Arch still the place to be to get the latest gear?

If you already have exotic gear on your Mesmer and Engineer you should be fine. If not, here's some options. Note that the LV 80 boost also gives a set of Soldiers gear so anyone you boost should be fine.
  • Buy off the trading post.
  • If you have crafting leveled, craft it.
  • If you have dungeon tokens, purchase from Dungeon Vendor in Lion's Arch near Fractal portal.
  • If you have a lot of karma, buy from the Orrian Temple vendors in Cursed Shore after a temple meta event.
  • If you've played a decent amount of WvW, buy from an Weapon Master/Armor Master NPC (near spawn in any WvW map) using Badges of Honor.
  • Complete WvW or PvP reward tracks for Triumphant, Glorious, or Legacy Armor. The dungeon themed tracks also give weapons and 1 armor piece per completion.

If you have laurels from when you originally played you can spend them at a Laurel Vendor for ascended acessories and the like. Note that getting certain stat sets, such as HoT or PoF specific ones can be more challenging since there's less options to obtain them, but a core stat set should be fine to let you complete expansion content.

For builds you can use something like Metabattle, but since we're just a few days into a new expansion things are likely to change. I'd suggest using it for guidance, but trying to work up something for yourself.

The metabattle wiki is also a bit fucked and probably will be until tomorrow. API isn't working properly.

I really regret not buying 4 additional character slots a long time ago and making the rest of the professions (wouldn't have been able to for Revenant, but still...) so I'd be able to boost them all to 50 with those birthday boosters.

I do have my 80 Elementalist, and three others at 50 now. Dunno which two I want to boost to 80. Also, still debating buying those four character slots so I can make one of each of the remaining professions.

I've made significantly more progress on my Elementalist, but it's just so damn hard to survive fights playing as one. Am I doing something wrong? Are Elementalists viable in solo PvE and I just suck?

I had a fire mage main in World of Warcraft, but as soon as Legion hit, my main become a Demon Hunter solely because I could kill everything and anything by myself. My DPS was worse than my fire mage's, but I had so much damn lifesteal that it was impossible to kill me.

I kind of want something that's easy mode like that so I'm not spending most of my time running back to where I died from the waypoint. I know a class like Guardian is tanky, but does it have the life regen I'm after? Is there a profession in GW2 that doesn't have to worry about pulling too many mobs at a time?

https://qtfy.eu/guildwars/builds/ is the place to go for PvE specs and build guides. Metabattle is more for PvP and WvW. It'll be a bit for them to settle down with builds though.

anyone having trouble gettingto the game in eu? i keep getting a cannot communicate with log-in server error

It's not just you. EU servers are especially unstable after the Expansion compared to NA.

Necromancer with the reaper specialization is probably the best "pull everything and make them die" build. It thrives against hordes because of its aoe abilities that give it life force. Since life force acts as a second hp bar, you can switch into reaper mode for a while to let your heal recharge and keep kicking ass without having to dodge all the time.

Elementalist is really good in pve, but you have to understand the nuances like how combos work and what traits synergize well.

Derilict Delve caves better than any other dungeon in the game and it’s open world.

Agreed.

Better against champs for sure. Not sure how that significantly improves your odds against 20 vets though.

Edit: Ah I see. Use an aoe burst and get some distance.

Mhm. Between Natural Healing, Might Makes Right, and Dagger healing you're practically unkillable. It's great. I highly recommend it for any on playing a warrior through the story or open world.

I actually didn't realize how resilient I was until playing around on Holosmith and Dragon Hunter and Mirage.

Thanks for the tips! I'll get to gearing up as soon as I get home. Will definitely check out those vendors as soon as I get home. And I should really get my crafts leveled too.

Man, I can never ever decide between Guardian and Engineer. On the one hand, awesome mace animations and feeling like a defensive god. On the other, turrets and flamethrowers!

On Spellbreaker I am running Mace / Axe right now. It's really nice. Mace has that pummel feel to it, and Axe #5 gives you that spin-to-win-beetlejuice-dirty-dancing-vibe.

GW2 is harder than a lot of mmos, so don't feel bad.

Are you eating foods and using sharpening stones? You could run with potion of karka toughness - has some good defensive stats.

I do accept food when people put food trays down though XD.

So... I tried this game way back when it originally launched, and kind of shrugged it off. Smash cut to the xpac I ended up getting it pretty cheap, but again didn't really play all that much. Here we are again, but this time I have nobody to play with, so what is the GAF server or does that matter and I can just join from wherever? Also, should I start from 1 and just go all the way to max or just use one the 80 boosts? I tried the boost and ran around the trial but was thoroughly confused by just about everything lol. Sorry if I am repeating questions or missed answers in the op but I do want to play this xpac, not sure where to start!

You can. All the servers are connected in the megaserver. Server only matters when it comes to World Vs World PvP (GAF is on stormbluff isle).

As for boosting versus going through the game, it's really difficult to say. Some people seem to really enjoy boosting themselves and then playing the game backwards. Because of the way the game works, you can boost to lvl 80 and dynamically do all the content all the way down to lvl 1 (if you want to) because your level is scaled. So no content is invalidated ever.

On the other hand, it can be overwhelming learning everything, so you might want to watch a good starter guide if you decide to.

Instead of wasting your boost, make sure you know what class you want to boost to lvl 80 if you decide to go for it.

When you make a new character and beat the tutorial area, you can press Y and go to the pvp area. There you can test your profession as max level with access to all weapons and such. it can give you an idea of what you'd like to play.

Excellent, thank you so much for taking the time to answer me. I tried the Elementalist (? Not sure if that name is right, it felt a little like Avatar) and I really loved it, but it was the first one I tried lol. I'll check some more stuff out, but I feel like starting from scratch and working towards the end is the best choice for me unless someone has a pretty comprehensive starter guide.

Anyone running that graphics post processing thing, GW2 hook? < I am interested in seeing the increased draw distance in the new maps. I imagine it takes a serious framerate hit though?

There are many starter guides on youtube to get you started, but you can always ask in guild chat also:)

So you can survive most of Draconis' hot water with the skimmer. You only seem to get hit near the coast but you can just use it's mount ability to avoid getting hurt for a short period of time.

Pretty cool honestly. :D

Firebrand Guardian is out of this world good right now. I highly recommend it before it gets nerfed.

Saw this on reddit, across Lornar's in 60 seconds using the hidden mount.

I've seen a few of these.

While it's super cool to see in action, trivializing terrain like that is part of why I specifically really dislike what Flying Mounts did to World of Warcraft. This thing is nuts.

whats the best way to get skill points to unlock. Guardian is my 3rd or 4th character so it has no map completion and zero sps cuz used them to half-unlock dragonhubter which I barely used.

I don't know if there's are any Hero Point trains left in HoT maps now that the expansion is out. But if you can find one, follow one of those. Even then it's worth heading around those maps grabbing the hero points you can solo.

Once you get Springer 3 and Skimmer there's a pretty straight forward route you can take from Hero Point to Hero Point in PoF to get unlock your spec.

I wanna try firebrand but I need quick way to get viper exos.

Make Magi's gear and stat swap it to vipers >:3

Seriously though, I think 90% of my general dislike of all the condition build dominance is how costly Viper's gear in particular is. Like during the Zerker meta I could throw down 50g and I'd have a new character fully geared.

Apparently runes of the Renegade are the new hotness now.

How many HP needed for a complete unlock?

How many HP needed for a complete unlock?

250 for both Dragonhunter and Firebrand.

I think I’m doing something really wrong. I used my boost on my thief, as the new Mesmer spec looks really uninteresting. Went into the first story instance of the expansion, and got blown away repeatedly by the mobs. Think I died like 5 times before I got to the raptors.

Is the gear from the boosts that? Are thieves really weak in pve stuff? Or are the build / weapon options it supplies a bad choice? Is content tuned for already having one Elite spec?
Thieves are really, really squishy. They rely on Pistol's black powder, kiting and dodging really well to survive.

The trait Invigorating Precision is a god send for soloing. 15% of critical strike damage is converted to health. Short bow is a must when things start getting hair. The weapon has endless kiting potential.

Daredevil has much better sustain by having a bazillion dodges and vault spam.

I know no one cares about these, but I am actually kinda bummed out that all of the the Adventures this time around are the same 2 things, either a quick hunt for 5/6 items around the map or a
Griffon
obstacle course.

And to be honest, to complete the first set of adventures you have to use the
Griffon
anyways.

The obstacle courses were okay, reminded me of similar challenges on PS2 Spiderman 2, lol. But I'm glad I'll never have to do them again.

Posted this a few pages back but if you want to know how much leeway you have when it comes to HPs:

Core Tyria: 189 (1hp = 1hp)
HoT: 11 + 11 + 11 + 7 = 40 x 10 = 400
PoF: 5 + 7 + 8 + 6 + 3 = 29 x 10 = 290

In total, that's:

189 + 400 + 290 = 879 total HPs

(doesn't include HPs from leveling up of course - you get enough for all but the elites from leveling up after all)

So you have a lot of choice once you're through PoF.

Hero Point trains will probably start back up after a few weeks I'm sure which will help as well :)

It's too bad I haven't been able to play the game for at least 2yrs since I went 4k. The UI is just way too small.

I expected a bunch more with Adventures, so this makes me sad too. I like the expansion a lot, but it's outright bizarre just how much they backtracked off certain Heart of Thorns elements. Particularly since Adventures would be so much better suited to these exploration-focused maps. (Before they were in conflict with meta objectives, now mostly gone.)

That's sort of where I'm at, and it is kind of killing my desire to make any progress in any direction.
Luckily my main unlocked Holosmith automatically so I have him so I can progress.

Guardian is going to be secondary so I can redo stories with my friends but also hearing about how OP it is, got me excited to try it as soon as possible.
