Since launch I've always thought the Sanctuary remake called Asylum in Reach could have been so much more than it ended up being. While I appreciate the fact that Bungie even bothered remaking one of my favorite maps from Halo 2, the end results always seemed a bit half-done to me. Oddly placed objects, inaccuracies and framedrops are common on Asylum. Now, nearly a year and a half later the same version that came with the disc is still in matchmaking. After such a long time Forgers have discovered ways to create their maps more efficiently, something Bungie apparently didn't have the time for (at least for Asylum and other launch Forge maps). That's why I decided to start building my own version of Sanctuary a few weeks ago. The result of this labor is Refuge.

With Refuge I tried to recreate Sanctuary accurately, while using as few objects and as little budget as possible. I heard that previous remakes of Sanctuary were denied deployment into matchmaking because they didn't support splitscreen. I was hoping to make a version that does support it. I'm really happy with the end result because I ended up using only around 4100$ budget which is roughly 1500$ less than Asylum! Combine that with the fact that I don't use lights and the sight-lines are shorter Refuge is sure to perform better than Asylum. In my tests so far I haven't recorded any complaints about the framerate, splitscreen and singlescreen alike.

Aside from performance issues that Asylum had, I also decided to include some changes to the geometry of the map. While I did like some of the things that were different from the original overall it didn't feel like Sanctuary.
Some (but not all) of the changes I've made:
-Raised the Needle Rifle walkway
-Removed the line of sight from sniper to sniper
-Made the walkway from sniper to the middle equal length on both sides of the map
-Moved around the rocks so they're more like the placement in Sanctuary
-Made a small jump-up to the top of the middle ring just like in the Halo 2 version of the map
-Kept the jump-up right in front of the Shotgun tunnel but made it a bit easier to use
-Added objects next to Blue Needle Rifle walkway to replicate the rock cliff on the Red side

I've made some screenshots so you can get a better idea of what the map looks like:
-An overview of the map
-Red base
-Blue base
-Sniper spawn
-Blue rock area
-Middle ring
-Sniper-to-middle line of sight
-Raised Needle Rifle walkway

It's set up for all gametypes (except for Invasion and Race), supports teams of every colour and also Free-For-All. Keep in mind that Refuge has dynamic spawns for Slayer. This means that players aren't limited to their own side in regards to spawns. They can now spawn everywhere on the map resulting is less spawn-killing and less frustrating matches.

Oh definitely. Don't think anyone thinks it's final, but it was a real unhappy surprise at the time.

Yeah, theres no way thats close to final, I know that, but I wonder if it was meant to be elaborated on in the trailer and they never changed it. It just kinda looks that weird. That said, I doubt 343 would go anywhere close to that look for Cortana so I'm not too worried, I just hope they don't make her look like she's made out of featureless rubber just to avoid the nakedness issue.

Looks good! I'll DL and give it a try. Also, way to go, for some reason this post made me miss the Halo 2 visual aesthetics of sanctuary.

Damn Xbox won't connect to the internet, guess I'll have to buy a new modem.

Edit: it looks really good Over, maybe you can get a CC to submit it for you, they're a plague on GAF :)

I doubt that CGI Cortana from the announcement trailer is representative of what she will look like in the game.

You guys really get jacked up about Cortana and codpieces. I dunno, guess I just don't think it's that big of a deal. Each game is going to have its own visual style, I'll get used to it.

Yea we know it's not final but it was their first impression. Also I agree that each game has to have it's own visual style but it should at least look similar to what it has been established to look like. Let's use cortana as an example. As much as she has changed every game still looks like Cortana. She has certain aspects which define her look which have carried over. The trailer one doesn't have any of that. The face, the patterns, nothing looks like Cortana. It's the same with the chief's codpiece. Before the armor looked functional and everything you could look and say yea I can see why they would have armor there. So to suddenly see none it's like um ok wtf.

So when you radically change what has been established time and time again design wise you are going to have some fans notice.

Yep. I never took Cortana from the teaser trailer as Halo 4's Cortana since it isn't done in-house. People mentioned it already, the model looks unfinished and very prototype-like. But I can see why people are mad because it is the first official trailer of the game. For me, it(=the teaser) only tease the overall mood, the setting and that the Chief gets new tech.

Did not expect that reference in here :p
Damn. I hope I can fight on Galaxies sometime.

I downloaded both your map and Overkill's last week. Like them both, but I am more partial to Overkill's in that he has rocks by the Shotgun tunnel rather than ramps, and the middle structure is filled with the tall beams. That's one of the many things I hate about Asylum is the lack of material inside the ring. Feels barren. Overall those do show how poorly Aslyum was made, ugh.

I understand that, but specifically in the case of Cortana, that is clearly a CGI shot placeholder that doesn't represent what the final model will look like.

Let's judge how the characters look once we see them in-game.

Problem with adding those beams is that they cost an enormous amount of budget. Every separate column piece costs 50$ and it takes up like 3 or 4 per beam.
Also, I prefer the idea of the jump in front of the tunnel that Asylum has. The rock in the original version was a bit in the way so that's why I took Bungie's Asylum jump and made it easier to use.

Halo 1: Anime Cortana. Her proportions are kind of weird, very typical anime, with some clothes wouldn't be out of place in Oni with her design.

http://i.imgur.com/i3sao.jpg

Halo 2: More realistic-ish Cortana, somewhere being realistic (like the humans in the game) and the Halo 1 anime Cortana. They also tried to give her elbow-length gloves and thigh-high boots in her hologram. If the Miranda reveal was thought up around this time, it appears they made her resemble Miranda (or the other way around). More proportionate now.

http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20090902110724/halo/images/thumb/6/62/Cortana.jpg/270px-Cortana.jpg[/ img]

Halo 3: We've got the polys and the animation tech now, let's make her look like a woman. Like the other characters in the game, she looks like she actually has muscles on her body instead. She was kept proportional in her assets so Bungie kept it sane. It looked like they also Jen Taylor'd her up a bit. The arm-length glove and holoboots were shortened a bit now that I look at it. This is my favorite one because she finally looks like a *woman*, and I'm glad that they used this version for Anniversary (even though I guess it's the only 360-class model of Cortana they'd probably have available for use at the time). I wouldn't say she got much more buxom, just more defined as the technology allowed. Halo 3's doesn't stray too far from 2's. Certainly no Ivy from Soul Calibur type of jump

http://i.imgur.com/14Vd5.jpg

The Halo 4 E3 trailer one looked like a placeholder. If they ever make a Halo 2 Anniversary, they should retcon Halo 3 Cortana into that one too.
I see no gloves or boots in these pics. Maybe boots kinda, but not tall ones, and definitely no gloves. WTF.

Halo CE and 3 Cortana FTW

Oh I don't think anyone is saying they won't. As down as I am about the few things graphic wise I've seen I'm waiting and renting the game to see for myself first before I write anything off. If I like what I see graphical wise, gameplay wise, and story wise I'll turn around and buy it and be happy. If I don't then oh well I'll just move on to something else. But I, like I would hope everyone else is, am waiting till it's released to make a final judgement.

Hey GAF, I lost interest in FPS games around the turn of last gen (Portal and MP were the only exceptions over the last several years), so although I've owned an Xbox and Xbox 360, I never played any Halo games. Looking to change that, as I've started getting back into the genre again. I'm looking at campaign only--I've read in a few places that Reach is the best. Is that the general consensus? Can I play it without knowing any of the Halo lore? If the plot is important, then should I really just start at the first game and go from there? Looking for an objective response, because there's no guarantee that I'd actually spend the time playing through each game consecutively either, but it might be possible since the games are on the shorter side.

Absolutely. You can play any game without reading the books. Reach actually retcons the books in some degree.

I'd pick up Halo Anniversary for your first Halo at this point. It's a budget title with a campaign that holds up incredibly well even ten years later, easily the best in the series in my opinion.

Agreed. Awesome way to get into Halo for the first time and start with the game that started it all. The upgrades to it are awesome. I actually prefer them to the originals by quite a lot, except for some of the sounds, but they are still good.

Edit: What Psycho says probably make sense for chronological purposes if you intend to play them all anyway.

I certainly wouldn't be reading the books at this point, but I was more concerned with jumping into the series so late with a title like Reach.

I was initially considering this and Reach. Part of me definitely wants to play the first one as well. Thanks guys :) I might go ahead and start with anniversary then..

Honestly campaign wise I'd play them in chronological order if you want it to all make any sense. So I'd play them in this order:

Reach
Halo Anniversary
Halo 2
Halo 3

I'd also suggest Halo 3: ODST if you want a good self contained side story in the universe. Game has some great atmosphere and gameplay.

I wonder how I'd feel going from Reach to Anniversary, playing the prequel before the first game.

... probably how I would if I watched the Star Wars Prequels before the Original Trilogy...

Dirty.

For people like you 343i released this game last year:
Halo_Boxshot.jpg

It is the remake of the first Halo game. I dunno if you can call it a remake but it is the original game + a new graphic layer. Especially I'd recommend it because it shows why the most of us felt in love with Halo. The gameplay. Even today Halo: Combat Evolved gameplay is amazing. You can count that game to the timeless ones like The Legend Of Zelda: OoT, SMB/W etc. You can play it in a few years and still have a lot of fun. And the campaign is amazing too. Yep. A lot of people will say: No it isn't because Bungie re-used a lot of the first few mission content/assets in the last mission. Personally I never had any problems with it. You get a glimpse of the universe(which fully evolved in Halo 2 imo). So my answer is: Get the Original Trilogy - Halo 1-3 - and you will have a lot of fun. I'd wait with Reach. The campaign feels very disjointed for me and at the end you maybe going to ask wtf is the meaning of this if you haven't really played any other Halo-game.

Otherwise Reach doesn't reveal the big twist like the Star Wars Prequels did.

The two have very little reference to each other, and all of it happens at the end of Reach and the beginning of CE. Reach is an okay prequel from a story standpoint, granted you're not too hung up on dates and characters from the books.

Anniversary it is then. I was in high school when Halo first came out, and my younger brother was pretty into it, but I never touched it. After the series took off over the next few years I always regretted having never tried it, so I figure it's time to rectify that error now that I've started playing FPS games a bit again. Thanks for the help, guys! Looking forward to posting my thoughts in here since the thread seems so active.

edit: Amazon should have it here Monday. Looking forward to it

I don't know whether you know this or not, but Reach actually is a prequel to Halo CE. So if you want to play it for the story, you could play Reach first and Anniversary directly after that since they fit really nice into each other.

Maybe it is my naughty and secret habit but I love to read/see/hear stories/impressions of the first encounter with my favourite game. Can you maybe post your impressions after you played some bit of the campaign?

Yeah, playing them in order of release, not necessarily chronologically, is how I'd do it. There's a mechanical progression there that ends up making more sense. A brief warning: if you decide to go through the whole series, don't play the Xbox version of Halo 2 on the 360, it has serious emulation issues. The PC version is probably better, though I can't speak to how it controls firsthand.

I meant more in terms of overall quality. All the things I love about Star Wars are in the OT, all the things I dislike about it are in the Prequels (Darth Maul notwithstanding). The same kinda thing applies to Reach; I just don't care for Reach at all, and were I playing them chronologically for the first time, it might actually turn me off from Halo... or I'd finish it and be blown away by how awesome the rest of the series is.

Halo 1-3 has all the charm and epic moments. Reach has... erm.... uh.... hmm.

The problem doing it this way is you go from being able to do so much in the campaign in terms of vehicle boarding, weapon-swapping, etc; then downshifting into the really basic stuff in the first Halo. I'd go with starting in chronological order of release, and subbing Anniversary for CE.

Got a real Forerunner vibe off it, for multiple reasons.

I'd be wary of playing through all of the series for the first time, in any way a short amount of time. Would likely get burnt out.

If you have a 360 wired controller or the wireless adapter for PC it plays perfectly. And yea the PC version of Halo 2 is the better version. Graphics are a bit better and you don't have the texture pop in during cutscenes. At the same time you don't have the ghosting that happens on the Xbox version when playing emulated on the 360.

Yea but if you want the story to make sense and really flow together it's for the best I think. That's one reason I really would have liked anniversary to be more of a remake with Vehicle Boarding and weapon swapping being added in to be honest. I won't lie and say when playing Anniversary I really miss those two features without a doubt. They were the greatest additions to Halo since Halo 1.

Forgive me I played with every one over 10 hours last night so I don't really remember you, everyone but 789 was nice to play with do yeah your a cool guy. I likely came off as a huge dick but hey least I make people laugh

The best part of last night was shadow789 going 1-17 on Boardwalk BTB and blaming the game for shots that he completely missed. Oh, and you completely destroying his argument that "chief killed all the flood in the universe, they're not coming back in halo 4"

On a semi-related note, you guys have read the books, right? I've never read one, and am considering purchasing them. Is there any particular order I should read them in?

You where in that game?!, damn iv got to start checking who people are.

Start with The Fall of Reach for the story of chief and the UNSC around the period of the games

If you just want story about the flood and the forerunners ect start with HALO Cryptum
