I do find it funny that adding a progression system to H4 is excused because "the gaming landscape has changed/everyone is doing it", etc etc.

That's fine. But how the hell does shoehorning a COD system in like that take precedence over, you know, having a working file share? Classic settings in custom games? Why did a decade of groundbreaking legacy features get left behind while the lobby UI got a pointless redesign? Why is an entirely outsourced Forge mode still nothing more than grey blocks, and why can't I play any of its maps?

If features were added to try to keep up with the evolving FPS market, 343 was already behind the times upon release. Blops 2 is doing something interesting with its streaming setup and strong emphasis on its ranking system. Far Cry 3 is doing something interesting with its map editor. Battlefield 3 is doing something interesting with scale and major post-release updates. Halo 4's throws on a few coats of paint, but it doesn't hide the cracks in the walls. It's a jack of all trades and master of none, and considering how much of the path was cleared for them by Bungie, it's amazing that 343 did almost nothing that you could consider revolutionary or even evolutionary with Halo 4. It's a mish-mash of mediocrity and executive driven design.

But I'm sure Halo 5 will be better!
I believe this is a far more valid (and completely separate) argument to make. However there's not a whole lot to say about the matter other than it's unexcusable.

Didn't 343 straight up deny loadouts and perks back in March?

I dunno but it would probably be funny if someone could find the initial info dump we got back then. I think their was a consensus -- or at least I thought -- that we were getting trolled and that the first news article (IGN maybe?) was a joke to piss off Halo fans. Whoops.

When I heard about it I just said "oh no." Little did I know.

Bravo posted this over at THC.

Bravo said:
To be clear, all I think about is how the make the Halo 4 experience as best as possible – I think about it at work, I think about it during lunch, I think about it on my drive home, and I think about it before I go to bed. I have a passion for Halo and the feeling it gives people – I want people to play this game until 4AM because they are having too much fun, I want people to debate map strategy, and overall I want Halo 4 to play - and be remembered - as a great Halo game.

then goes on to answer some questions. Nice to see some real genuine passion out of a employee instead of "love of the series".

I remember I lost my shit when the Game Informer details first came out. And rightfully so

I'd guess this is what you're talking about

It was Game Informer IIRC. What disappointed me the most was when were were told not to worry about the weapon drops because "they're not random". That wasn't even stretching the truth.

So playing Halo 2 on XBConnect - game is fun but slower and floatier than I remember it. Would love it if HaloGaf set a day to jump on it and get some games in as a group.

Anyone know why I cant seem to join Overdoziz games?

For those curious what was released:

Spartan Points

Spartan Points is the new currency system in Halo 4. They will buy things such as armor, armor abilities, Spartan Ops missions (see below), and some

Spartan Ops

This was probably my most favorite addition I saw. From how it was described, think fo Spartan Ops like Spec Ops from Modern Warfare but with a storyline. They will span out over several months, encouraging players to return to the game. Game Informer said that Spartan Ops will be comparable in scope and size to the in single-player storyline.

Why Reds Fight Blues

I think most of us probably guessed this, but reds fight blues and blues fight reds for training purposes. They fight in something called the UNSC Infinity. The UNSC Infinity is a 3km long ship sent into deep space on a mission. It contains a virtual reality sector that creates the multiplayer experience.

Sprint

So not only is sprint in the game, but it is a standard armor ability. You do not need to pick it up, it will always be available. You do not need to buy it with your Spartan Points, you will always have it equipped no matter what. So essentially, you can have two armor abilities.

Forerunner Vision

Ever wanted to be super man? Now you can! See through walls with your x-ray vision! I can’t say I hate this armor ability, I haven’t used it yet. I’m hoping it comes with its weaknesses and it discourages camping. Sorry guys, but camping in Halo 4 will not be a legitimate tactic.

Returning Armor Abilities

The hologram, jetpack, and active camo will make a return in Halo 4. It didn’t elaborate on the abilities, but you can probably assume they’ll be about the same.

Elites Not Returning to Multiplayer

Not much detail was given as to why elites will not see multiplayer combat, it was stated in a picture caption. The caption reads, “Competitive multiplayer focues on the Spartan IVs. Elites will not be playable.

Grenades

Now the article itself did not talk about grenades, but I noticed in the picture the Spartan had 4 grenade options. I assume the plasma grenade will return as seen from an explosion in the picture and the frag grenade will most definitely return as seen by the Halo 4 first look video.

Firefight

Once again, no explanation why aside from a picture caption. The caption read, “Halo 4′s campaign is still playable with four players online (in reference to Sparan Ops, ensuring players that Spartan Ops will not replace the campaign coop experience). 343 Industries has no plans to include a dedicated Firefight mode. I’m torn on this, I don’t normally play firefight, but I feel like it is a standard necessary feature in the game after Halo 3: ODST introduced it.

Regicide

Regicide is a variation of free for all. I think it’s similar to VIP. Regicide, as stated by the article, “sets the leading scorer as the king. Every opponent that the king kills raises his bounty; other players have to kill the king to claim the reward.”

Distraction and Revenge Medals

Don’t feel bad anymore for not killing a single person in the game, you can get a medal for being a distraction! Oh, you just got killed and now you’re raging at that player? Calm down and get rewarded for hunting down the guy that just killed you!

Let me make it clear that I do not necessarily see these medals as bad. They just may reward people that don’t actually deserve one.

No More Weapon Camping

One the skills that separated veteran players from inexperienced players was the ability to time power weapons’ spawns. In Halo 4, this will be near impossible. Weapons drop down in drop pods at random locations around the map. Quoted from the article, “This gives the matches other focal points, and it also helps alleviate the advantage longtime players always used to have over newer recruits; the best weapons are not always going to be found at the same spawn locations.” Unless there is a distinguishable skill gap between players, I most definitely do not like this idea.

No More Respawn Delay

Immediately after you die, by tapping the X button you are sent back into the match. Now let’s contemplate why this might be bad. Let’s say Halo spawns are… not so great. A skilled player out BRs/DMRs/whatevers a unskilled player. Now that unskilled player can immediately respawn and find you before your shields even regenerate! I understand 343 is trying to speed up the game, but they must understand the consequences of instant spawns.

Joining In-Progress Games

So to solve the quitting problem, 343 implemented the ability to join games that are in-progress. My question is are we going to have the ability to search for games starting up instead? It infuriates me to join a game at the last possible second, not even offering me the chance to play.

Kyle add a link to the last OT in the OP. I know you can't be bothered to link previous threads, but at least make it easy to go to the last one where everything is archived.

Would like to see more 343 in this thread.

Would you post in this thread if you were a 343 employee and everyone in the thread is going to demonize you?

Jesus christ, it's a fucking game.

This turned out to be a blatant lie. All people do is weapon camp in Halo 4, only now they get to chose where to camp and what weapon they're getting (in Infinity Slayer).

Just sit in the back with yo weps. Snipe snipe snipe. This was happening when I was playing back in Nov. Still a thing? lol. I think what really killed it for me was a team full of camo and snipers. I just said "lol even Reach didn't have this shit."

Isn't that really sad? Every Halo game was about power weapon control, map control, knowing where the enemy spawns and now those things are just not important anymore.

Biggest issue, I have, are still AA's making a return, especially camo and jetpack. Camo combined with a Boltshot is making it very difficult to play this game.

Edit: How the fuck could I forget camo snipers? Thanks Devo for reminding me! Biggest joke ever. How could someone think, that those two things are fun?

8 RT is good for tablets, I suppose. Well, it's just a stripped down Win8 designed to run on non-x86 (ARM) CPUs, so, the only applications it supports are those can are in the app store.

The Surface Pro tablet, is more of an ultrabook, and will likely have a similar price, but it runs full fledged Win8 with an Intel CPU. Core i3/i5 IIRC.
Surface Pro has a 3rd gen i5 and costs $899 for the 64GB and $999 for 128GB (that doesn't include a keyboard).
For those curious what was released:
I remember people not being too pleased about that list, sadly for a few of the items on there, they all ended up being true.

Or perhaps the members of this forum, and thread in particular should avoid groupthink in the future.

Maybe Halo 4 just isn't very good?

Obviously 343 members are more than welcome to post here (we don't talk exclusively about halo anyway), but their game will be criticized whether they like it or not.

Also, outside of the guy who said dicks and/or tits needed to be woodchipped, have there been that many real direct insults towards 343? I get that sometimes this thread is a bit offputting for those who love the game, but to say there's a "hivemind" mentality here is preposterous.

There are some apparent problems that anyone can basically see from the get-go. Not even debating them seems kind of sweeping major issues under the carpet. I do agree that people tend to latch onto too many negative aspects but forget to praise the good stuff. Which at times feels like people are outright just ragging on-and-on. All we can do is just elevate the discussion by actually debating and not do the whole bait-and-switch Halo 4 sucks comments constantly.

Piping in late but the CoD4 progression model came out in 2007 - since then many multiple games including 5 CoD games have used the model.

The model is tired and boring at this stage for me at least.

When building something I want honest feedback, if it's shit I want to know. Maybe I'm different or don't take criticism personally like that but hey that's me. Yea people do go over the line, but there is A LOT of constructive feedback from people who live and breathe the series (which somehow always gets forgotten with these comments). When you are the lead franchise for a company for the last 11 years and the community has no idea what's going on with it anymore there's a issue. I understand it's the holidays now, but before that.

Can 343 turn it around? Of course. Me personally the last straw of confidence broke with the map pack release and the Euro crowd getting shunned.

yes, progression sucks. It's cool to have stuff like camo unlocks and the like and getting gold weapons but having things that actually affect gameplay blocked off to you is dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb.

your game should be fun enough to keep me playing by itself.

edit: Like, when did game development companies decide that they didn't want to provide us with fun anymore, but do some psychological experiments on us trying to get us hooked on their game

It's fun when you're doing it though! Just learn to do it back. Can't you make rock to defeat their scissors? Have fun.

To be honest that was the only reason I did not like in the other Halo's. That's why I like Halo 4 with the quick spawning system away from the other team. Other then that I agree with you!

For what though? Like, literally what is the point of nagging about issues? Is this some sort of roundtable thread where we just expect to post something and Frank will see it and say "Oh, well fuck! This is something new that we never even thought about during the development process! Let me just pass this on to the team to patch in next update!"

There are issues worth discussing, then there are issues that we need to live with. 90% of the discussion here is the latter. I am tired of reading it, and I cannot imagine how even more exhausted the posters are of typing it over, and over, and over.

It's nice to see something every once in a while where someone will post about something awesome happening in the game or when weird buggy things happen and we all have a good laugh and shit on the game for breaking. But fucking hell, I don't know how many times it needs to be addressed that the game doesn't have enough small maps. Oh god, Forge is grey?? No theater in campaign sucks??? FILESHARE IS STILL BROKEN????

It is so. Damn. Tired.

How many Halo OTs have you been in. It's going to be circular. People are playing the game. The issues will come up. They will be discussed. What else is there to expect?

I want 343 to come clean on the issue.

If you're not interested in making the game that we want, that people who know what they want want, then just say it. Say, "We're not interested in making a competitive 4v4 arena style game."

Just let me know for sure whether or not I'm going to continue dumping my money into what is now "your" franchise.

Game's only been out a little over a month. The criticism so far is just the tip of the iceberg.

Btw, it's amazing how many people hate the game. Usually with Halo titles there's at least like a month or two period where people kind of like the game somewhat before things get nasty.
