Halo |OT9| One Final Effort Is All That Remains

Anybody bored and skilled who could swap out my forehead assassin symbol for a 343?

I'd love you eternally*.

Edit: eh, maybe I'll ask later once I can hunt down my clean version of the avatar.

So Halo 4 was confirmed to be a 720 p Resolution game.

Does that mean i will have the black bars on the top and bottom of my HD TV? because Battlefield 3 and Halo:CEA both have the black bar on the top and bottom.

If so, GOD FUCKING DAMNIT.

You'd think Ragnarok will be unveiled in the bulletin tonight; what would the 6000 words be about if not that?

bsangel mentioned something about talking about the journey 343 has gone through since the inception of Halo 4. I'd imagine that would be rather long.

Maybe the Promethean Weapons vid will feature some quick shots of it and Complex. Like, a tease without fully acknowledging or revealing it til October 1st. As of now Im not super excited for the Promethean weapons vid since we know of all the weapons.. But I am looking forward to seeing the Incineration Cannon and Binary Rifle in action. If its set on some awesome new maps though..

Complex, Flood mode, the recent press stuff. There's plenty for them to talk about.

Oh, right. Forgot all about Complex! That'll probably be the bulk of the bulletin.

Does your TV have a weird native resolution? That'd probably be the cause.

That would be nice, but I'd have no problem playing the PAX build again. Somehow I never managed to play Infinity Slayer or try out Longbow.

Hopefully enough 343 devs will be at NYCC for yet another GAF/343 humpday challenge. That CTF match on Exile was a damn good time.
I don't think a single setup at the community event had Longbow, but I certainly played quite a bit of Infinity Slayer on Adrift.

Are they perfect? No, but what they got right was that individual ability was allowed to flourish and be rewarded. With recent Halo games, players are forced into the most primitive instance of "teamwork" via teamshot just to have a chance of being effective. It's not deeper teamwork or better teamwork, it's just required to succeed. That doesn't make it better as a team game.

In great games, teamwork is just another skill that players must master and make their own; it's not the entire definition or deciding factor of success.

The reason I have more fun in CoD games than I have with recent Halo games is because I can play and be effective as an individual.

I just don't see it... it's an incredibly arbitrary argument.

So is it blasphemy when I say it looks like Ragnarok will look a little to much like Valhalla visually? :lol

I just wanted something a little more moody, maybe a snowstorm at sunset on a glacial lake.

I don't care that much, but I was hoping for some slightly new visuals, if even in the same vein. Different type of forest look like Tempest had or something, I dunno.

Ah well. We still haven't seen what it really looks like, but based on the similarity it seems safe to assume it looks much the same. Valhalla had great visuals though so I'm fine either way.

No official Ragnarok talk until October 1? I guess that's not too bad.

Most games are 720p these days, so you must have a weird hdtv.

Complained about this earlier. I would have liked them to either overhaul it visually completly (make it desert canyon or just something completly different) or at very least make it a winter map, snow everywhere.

You'd need to tell us a little about your TV first. Your 360 should be able to scale games to match the native resolution of your display as long as it's not some really odd resolution. The 360 has a dedicated scaler built in to accommodate this.

Do you know your TV's native resolution?

I still can't get over these visuals:

I mean, I can see his pores!

Yeah, I mean Valhalla was pretty, but in a way if Ragnarok basically does the same look it will have a prettier Forge World look. Its not a huge complaint, and Im glad they didn't make it like sandy ruins or something, but a similar but still new visual take would have been nice.

They all run at 720p...They get upscaled if they dont run at that natively.

I thought?

What I'm getting at is its probably a TV setting thats off/not correct for gaming.

Valhalla is a ugly map so not there's nothing wrong with being disappointed with the look of Ragnarok. I liked the look of the snow covered modded version from a few years back.

New interview:

"Something happens after the mission you played that keeps with our story-telling. I won’t ruin it for you but we also have terminals that go into the very surprising history of the Forerunner relationship with humans, and there’s some stuff that happens in the terminals that will – certainly for the hardcore fans – blow their minds."

Overall the interview just covers familiar ground, but it was still an interesting read.
Hopefully there is good storytelling outside of terminals as well.

I certainly hope it can be better than it has been. I play by myself a lot, and getting 'matched' up against an already formed team when mine are all randoms is just backbreaking. Hoping for a "Lone Wolf/Mercenary" filter, or even better have matchmaking see that you're alone and pair you up with other solo players. I can wait longer if that's what it takes; that beer won't drink itself.
Playlists should have party matching, and if 343 doesn't pump out a 100 playlists, I see no reason why it shouldn't be implemented.
-The ordnance system will force players to move around the map, as Over said, no more waiting on the laser to spawn at the top hill every time. I think the ordnance system will benefit BTB more than any of the other playlists.
On the contrary (discussed this with Ghaleon at PAX), BTB is where I find the ordnance system most worrying because of all the vehicles. When getting pressed by the opposing team in BTB, a somewhat coordinated push to get the right weapons at the right time has always been key to eliminating their (probably vehicle) advantage and tipping the fight back in your favor.

In Halo 4, that option isn't necessarily there. When we were playing a game of Exile, there was a point where we got endlessly spawn killed by the other teams Scorpion and Gauss Hog for about 5-6 minutes. In those 5-6 minutes, we got ordnance drops of a couple of Needlers and I think a SAW. Not exactly the useful weapons to take care of tanks.
You've been saying things like this a lot and I'm pretty sure that weapon drops come down in the same preset locations every time, just the weapons themselves are random, but tuned specifically for the map.

The way I understand it there are a number of preset spots where the weapons spawn (let's say 3-5, probably depending on the size of the map), and one of those presets is randomly chosen at the time of the drop. The only thing that's consistent about the system is the timing, there is always ordnance at certain time intervals.

I assume that one of the main reasons that the Global Ordnance System is in place is to get some weapon diversity because the sandbox is so large, that if they did it the old way, each power weapon would only be on about a single map. Given that reasoning, I wish they would have done something like weapon spawns were set up with a class of power weapons in spot. For example, you would have a rocket type weapon at top mid on Valhalla. It would always spawn in that same spot on a certain time interval, but the weapon could be random in it's own class, so you could get a Rocket Launcher, Incineration Cannon, Fuel Rod, or Laser at that spot. That would allow the structure to remain in place while still increasing the weapon diversity.

You could just use your TV's picture size button on the remote to make it fit

It's k just switch to your plasma pistol + plasma nade loadout and hope for the best.

Was going to say this :/

The oddest thing which came out of PAX was that Josh Holmes (I think) said they changed the vehicle balancing and strength of the Banshee in particular on the fact that everyone could carry Plasma Pistols and Sticky nades.

I may be wrong on the above, apologies if so.

So basically, without some of your team having PP's, times may get tricky. I am puzzled as to why PP's and Sticky nades are not just removed as a possibility for a BTB/ Dominion loadout.

How old is your tv? I'm playing on a 50 inch Sony 1080p 120hz tv and have never had the black bars on either of those games. It's like a 2 year old tv as well.

I enjoyed how the story had been presented in 'Dawn' and 'Forerunner'. It's a different approach but it could be counterproductive in terms of replayability. (To clarify I am talking about the in-game first person sequences like the shaft climbing)

Interview with CVG

Nothing particularly noteworthy from the interview besides this:

Frankie said:
But ultimately every system was either radically re-written or tweaked, and there's a whole spectrum of these systems we have improved. The entire rendering graphics component is probably one of the biggest changes, and our audio and networking underwent big revisions.

Interesting to hear that the networking side was not left untouched. Hopefully that means improvements to co-operative play.

Yeah, that's one of the very few areas I could see big improvements happening over Reach's netcode. Host selection (and better region matching) is the other big thing, for some reason Reach took a real nosedive in recent months in this area. It's gotten to the point where I almost wish they'd try resetting the hosting history like they did with past games so it'd try a whole bunch of new people out.

It's an important one too. If the co-operative netcode still suffer from the same problem as in Reach, Spartan Ops is going to have a serious problems.
Definitely. I'm very proud of my current connection speed, but Firefight and coop campaign are still completely unplayable for me. If they nail it with Spartan Ops, and I hope they do, it'll be a huge win for the series.
