I just reached the Halo 4 campaign, and it's the only game I haven't played at all, let alone the countless playthroughs of all the others. The highest praise I usually hear for this game, is that the graphics are fantastic, and the game can truly be beautiful in natural environments, but in forerunner structures, I'm constantly blinded by bloom and lens flare. The lighting feels far too overdone.
The gameplay also feels far more... canned, I think is a good word. Halo always felt like a fluid physics based world that you could interact with seamlessly and encouraged experimentation. When I reached the exterior of the first level, I expected to have the lovely low gravity from Halo 2's exterior ship part, but instead, I controlled exactly as indoors. But worse than that, I COULDN'T USE GRENADES. Did they just disable them for the section without explanation?!
I'll ignore the "cinematic" sections and sprint because I'm sure people have discussed those previously, but I feel there are many other terrible design choices. Halting gameplay to press every single switch? As someone who relished running through combat to just hit the switch and keep moving, just to see if I could get away with this, can't stand this halt every single time I reach a waypoint. Also, why was the wire frame view of landscapes that was previously used in Halo 3 for the sniper scope and ghost view screen, was removed from the ghost, but added to the fuel rod cannon?
Speaking of ghosts, why do they now have limited boost? The first time I actually had a reason to boost to the limit, it's in a section where they change the rules and give unlimited boost. Even more annoying, was in this section, I was playing co-op, and if I ever reached a jump before my partner, it would halt me right at the edge until he caught up, dooming my jump.
I have more issues, but I'm having a lot of trouble having fun with this game. The pistol seems to be the only improvement I've found so far. Has anyone else notice other baffling elements of the campaign? I can't be the only one completely confused by the thoughts behind it.
